The Walking Dead: 400 Days release date announced

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 06:36 PM PDT

Bridging episode to go on sale this week for $4.99; decisions made in 400 Days will impact season two.

Last month, during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Telltale Games confirmed its plans to release The Walking Dead: 400 Days, a bridging episode between the first and second seasons of its hit episodic adventure game.

Today, the company confirmed that the additional chapter will launch on selected platforms this week, landing first on the North American PlayStation Network on July 2, Steam and the Telltale Games Store on Wednesday July 3, and worldwide on Xbox Live from July 5. European PlayStation owners will be able to download the game from July 10, while the iOS version will launch globally on July 11.

The game takes place over 400 days in the same time period as the first season, but will not focus on Lee or Clementine. Instead, the game will be split into five short stories, each from the perspective of a different, new character in the universe. Players who have an existing save file from the first season will have their decisions carried over, while all choices made in 400 Days will also impact the upcoming second season, which will begin later this year.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days is not included in the original season pass, and will cost around $4.99. The game will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, iOS, and, for the first time, Sony's PlayStation Vita handheld.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 7661-7674: 1,2,3-Triazole-Substituted Oleanolic Acid Derivatives: Synthesis and Antiproliferative Activity

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Hybrid compounds are relevant products when searching for structure-activity relationships of natural products. Starting from the naturally occurring triterpene oleanolic acid, alkyl esters were prepared and treated with different aromatic azides using click chemistry to produce hybrid compounds. Some 18 new oleanolic acid derivatives were synthesized and the structures were confirmed by spectroscopic and spectrometric means. The antiproliferative activity of the new derivatives was evaluated towards normal lung fibroblasts (MRC-5), gastric epithelial adenocarcinoma (AGS), promyelocytic leukemia (HL-60), lung cancer (SK-MES-1) and bladder carcinoma (J82) cells. The alkyne esters 1 and 3 showed activity on all cell lines but without selectivity (19.6–23.1 μM and 14.1–56.2 μM, respectively), their respective methyl esters were inactive. Compounds with a benzene and p-anisole attached to the triazole ring, showed no antiproliferative effect. Introduction of a chlorine atom into the benzene ring (compound 9) elicited a selective effect against AGS cells (IC50 value: 8.9 μM). The activity was lost when the COOH function at C-28 was methylated. Better antiproliferative effect was found for compounds 11 and 15 bearing a p-toluenesulphonyl group, with values in the range of 10.8–47.1 μM and 11.5–22.2 μM, respectively. The effect, however, was not associated with selectivity.

File Juicer 4.35 - Extract images, video, or sound from files and folders. (Shareware)

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 02:09 AM PDT

File Juicer is a drag-and-drop can opener and data archaeologist. Its specialty is to find and extract images, video, audio or text from files which are hard to open in other ways.

It finds and extracts: JPEG, JP2, PNG, GIF, PDF, BMP, WMF, EMF, PICT, TIFF, Flash, ZIP, HTML, WAV, AVI, MOV, MP4, MPG, MP3, AIFF, AU, WMV, or text from files which contain data in those formats.

Lossless extraction... File Juicer does't convert the images/sounds/videos it finds, but saves them unchanged in their original format if possible. See the manual for details.

This is useful:

  • if you want to extract the images/sounds/videos from a PDF or Word document;
  • if you have old files you can no longer open with current applications;
  • if you receive emails with attachments you can not open;
  • if you have corrupt files or databases;
  • if you have damaged or acidentally erased flash cards for your digital camera;
  • if you receive "self extracting" EXE files designed for Windows;
  • or if this is just faster than copying and pasting from the file.
When you have extracted some files -- for instance from an accidentally erased flash card, you can then check that they are intact with QuickTime Player or convert them with other applications. For images, checking validity is done by letting File Juicer generate icons for the files. Then the files with icons are the ones which are intact.

File Juicer has Automator support so you can save just the settings you need and use them directly from Finder.

Version 4.35:

  • Improved: Raised limit for when File Juicer switches juicing Office documents to recovery mode to 512 MB. Some have Office documents this size, but I am not sure how many. If you happen to have any larger than 512 MB, please tell me more about it!

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 7646-7660: Eco-Friendly Chitosan Production by Syncephalastrum racemosum and Application to the Removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) from Wastewaters

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Due to the existence of new methodologies that have reduced the production costs of microbiological chitosan, this paper puts forward the use of agro-industrial residues in order to produce microbiological chitosan and to apply chitosan as an innovative resource for removing acid orange 7 (AO7) from wastewaters. The best culture conditions were selected by a full 24 factorial design, and the removal of the dye was optimized by a 23 central composite rotational design. The results showed that corn steep liquor (CSL) is an agro-industrial residue that can be advantageously used to produce microbiological chitosan with yields up to 7.8 g/kg of substrate. FT-IR spectra of the product showed typical peak distributions like those of standard chitosan which confirmed the extracted product was chitosan-like. The efficiency of removing low concentrations of AO7 by using microbiological chitosan in distilled water (up to 89.96%) and tap water (up to 80.60%) was significantly higher than the efficiency of the control (chitosan obtained from crustaceans), suggesting that this biopolymer is a better economic alternative for discoloring wastewater where a low concentration of the dye is considered toxic. The high percentage recovery of AO7 from the microbiological chitosan particles used favors this biopolymer as a possible bleaching agent which may be reusable.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 7631-7645: Synthesis and Characterization of Some New Complexes of Magnesium (II) and Zinc (II) with the Natural Flavonoid Primuletin

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Two new metal complexes formulated as [Mg(L)2(H2O)2]·H2O (1) and [Zn(L)2(H2O)2]·0.5H2O (2), where HL = 5-hydroxyflavone (primuletin), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, molar conductance, IR, UV-Vis, 1H- and 13C-NMR, fluorescence and mass spectra. In solid state, complexes had shown higher fluorescence intensities comparing to the free ligand, and this behavior is appreciated as a consequence of the coordination process.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 7609-7630: Hepatoprotective Effects of Mushrooms

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The particular characteristics of growth and development of mushrooms in nature result in the accumulation of a variety of secondary metabolites such as phenolic compounds, terpenes and steroids and essential cell wall components such as polysaccharides, b-glucans and proteins, several of them with biological activities. The present article outlines and discusses the available information about the protective effects of mushroom extracts against liver damage induced by exogenous compounds. Among mushrooms, Ganoderma lucidum is indubitably the most widely studied species. In this review, however, emphasis was given to studies using other mushrooms, especially those presenting efforts of attributing hepatoprotective activities to specific chemical components usually present in the mushroom extracts.

BootChamp 1.5 - Quickly boot into Windows via Boot Camp. (Free)

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 01:52 AM PDT

BootChamp is a small utility for quickly booting into Windows.

How is this different than selecting your Windows volume from within Startup Disk in System Preferences?

Well, using Startup Disk actually changes your startup disk permanently so that each time you restart, it boots into whatever you have selected. What this program is doing is the same thing that happens when you hold down Option at startup and select Windows. However, the app only requires a single click and your admin password, and then it restarts your computer into Windows without further input from you. It will not actually change your startup disk.

Version 1.5:
  • Improved detection of a Windows volume
  • Fixed potential crash
  • Added Croatian localization
  • BootChamp now requires a 64-bit computer

  • OS X 10.6.8 or later

Laws, Vol. 2, Pages 150-168: Labeling Genetically Engineered Food in the United States: Suggestions for a New Approach

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) provides that a food is misbranded if the label accompanying the product is false or misleading in any particular. Congress provided minimal guidance to assist the FDA in making these determinations. When challenged, courts have granted substantial deference to FDA's various interpretations of what constitute a material fact. However, when confronted with the regulatory question of whether or how to label products derived from genetically engineered (GE) crops, the FDA adopted a narrow reading of the statute that focused on changes in the product itself, rather than the act of genetic engineering. Only those GE products that possessed characteristics significantly different from their conventional counterparts would require labels. This "process versus product" distinction in food labels lies at the heart of the FDA's resistance to repeated calls for mandatory labeling of foods derived from genetic engineering. Consumer interest in GE food, according to the agency, is not a material fact to trigger mandatory labeling under the statute. In contrast to its approach to GE labels, the agency has long required (since 1966) process-based labels for foods treated with irradiation. As recently as 1986, the FDA affirmed that materiality of information under it misbranding analysis is not limited to product safety or even the abstract worth of the information, but whether consumers view the information as important and whether the omission of a labeling statement would mislead the consumer. Accordingly, mere consumer interest can give rise to a mandatory labeling regime under the FFDCA. In the irradiation context, whole foods and single-ingredient products treated with irradiation must bear a label indicating the process. The irradiation of components in a multi-ingredient food product, however, need not bear a label. This distinction between processed, multi-ingredient and whole or single-ingredient foods provides a potential pathway for the agency to revise its approach to mandatory GE labeling. Exempting highly processed, multi-ingredient foods from a labeling regime would minimize traceability and segregation-generated disruptions in the commodity supply chain, thereby minimizing potential compliance costs, while also empowering consumers to express their preferences for non-GE whole and single-ingredient food products.

Double Fine's Massive Chalice Kickstarter campaign ends with $1.2 million raised

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:28 AM PDT

Campaign for strategy game exceeds initial $725,000 goal.

Double Fine Production's Kickstarter campaign to fund an upcoming strategy game called Massive Chalice recently ended with a total of $1,229,015 raised.

The company created the Kickstarter page on May and initially had a funding goal of $725,000. The goal was surpassed in early June. Project lead Brad Muir will now lead a separate team within Double Fine to create Massive Chalice, following the success of the campaign.

Massive Chalice was billed as a tactical strategy game that will be a hybrid between X-COM and Final Fantasy Tactics, coupled with a bloodlines and breeding mechanic. This is the second game Double Fine Productions has created a Kickstarter campaign for, with the first being Broken Age.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 7584-7599: Anxiolytic-Like and Antinociceptive Effects of 2(S)-Neoponcirin in Mice

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Study aims: 2(S)-neopincirin (NEO) is a constituent from of Clinopodium mexicanum, which is used in traditional Mexican herbal medicine for its tranquilizing and analgesic properties. This study investigated the anxiolytic-like, sedative and antinociceptive effects of NEO in several mice models. Material and methods: The anxiolytic-like effect was evaluated in the hole-board (HBT) and Open Field Tests (OFT); sedative effect was evaluated in sleeping time induced by sodium pentobarbital, and its antinociceptive actions were measured in the hot plate test. To evaluate if the GABA receptor could be involved in the anxiolytic-like effect produced by NEO, in independent experiments, the effects produced by co-administration of NEO plus muscimol (MUS) and NEO plus Pitrotoxin (PTX) were evaluated in the HBT. Results: NEO was isolated from Clinopodium mexicanum leaves. The NMR, MS and optic rotation data helped establish its identity as (2S)-5-hydroxy-4′-methoxyflavanone-7-O-{β-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-rhamnoside}. NEO showed an anxiolytic-like effect and was able to counter the nociception induced by a thermal stimulus in a dose-dependent manner. PTX blocked the anxiolytic-like effect of NEO, while MUS was able to enhance it. Conclusions: The findings of present work demonstrated that NEO possesses anxiolytic-like and antinociceptive effects in mice. Such effects are not associated with changes in the locomotor activity. These results supported the notion that anxiolytic-like effect of NEO involves the participation of GABAergic system.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 7570-7583: Hepatotoxicity Evaluation of Aqueous Extract from Scutia buxifolia

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Nowadays there is an increase in the number of people taking herbals worldwide. Scutia buxifolia is used for the treatment of hypertension, but little is known about its action on liver. Thirty-two Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control and groups treated during 30 days with 100, 200 and 400 mg of lyophilized aqueous extract of S. buxifolia (SBSB)/kg of body weight. This study was planned to explore hepatotoxic effect of SBSB, which was assessed by serum transaminases (ALT and AST). Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were determined in liver, along with thiols content (NPSH), catalase (CAT) activity and, superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes. Histopathological studies of liver tissue were performed. Flavonoids and phenolics were quantified in SBSB by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC/DAD). We did not observe alterations on redox status (TBARS, NPSH, CAT and, SOD) in the control and experimental groups. An increase on AST activity was only observed at 200 mg of SBSB, whereas ALT score was not affected by SBSB. Moreover, no morphological alterations were observed on the hepatocytes, matching the analysed biochemical parameters. This way, we conclude that SBSB was not toxic.

Toxins, Vol. 5, Pages 1219-1229: Degradation of Aflatoxin B1 during the Fermentation of Alcoholic Beverages

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a contaminant of grain and fruit and has one of the highest levels of carcinogenicity of any natural toxin. AFB1 and the fungi that produce it can also contaminate the raw materials used for beer and wine manufacture, such as corn and grapes. Therefore, brewers must ensure strict monitoring to reduce the risk of contamination. In this study, the fate of AFB1 during the fermentation process was investigated using laboratory-scale bottom and top beer fermentation and wine fermentation. During fermentation, cool wort beer samples and wine must samples were artificially spiked with AFB1 and the levels of AFB1 remaining after fermentation were analyzed. AFB1 levels were unchanged during both types of fermentation used for beer but were reduced to 30% of their initial concentration in wine. Differential analysis of the spiked and unspiked wine samples showed that the degradation compound was AFB2a, a hydrated derivative of AFB1. Thus, the results showed that the risk of AFB1 carryover was still present for both types of beer fermentation but was reduced in the case of wine fermentation because of hydration.

Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 8340-8351: Organic Plasmon-Emitting Diodes for Detecting Refractive Index Variation

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

A photo-excited organic layer on a metal thin film with a corrugated substrate was used to generate surface plasmon grating coupled emissions (SPGCEs). Directional emissions corresponded to the resonant condition of surface plasmon modes on the Au/air interface. In experimental comparisons of the effects of different pitch sizes on the plasmonic band-gap, the obtained SPGCEs were highly directional, with intensity increases as large as 10.38-fold. The FWHM emission spectrum was less than 70 nm. This method is easily applicable to detecting refractive index changes by using SP-coupled fluorophores in which wavelength emissions vary by viewing angle. The measurements and calculations in this study confirmed that the color wavelength of the SPGCE changed from 545.3 nm to 615.4 nm at certain viewing angles, while the concentration of contacting glucose increased from 10 to 40 wt%, which corresponded to a refractive index increase from 1.3484 to 1.3968. The organic plasmon-emitting diode exhibits a wider linearity range and a resolution of the experimental is 1.056 × 10−3 RIU. The sensitivity of the detection limit for naked eye of the experimental is 0.6 wt%. At a certain viewing angle, a large spectral shift is clearly distinguishable by the naked eye unaided by optoelectronic devices. These experimental results confirm the potential applications of the organic plasmon-emitting diodes in a low-cost, integrated, and disposable refractive-index sensor.

Marine Drugs, Vol. 11, Pages 2293-2313: Strategies for the Development of Conotoxins as New Therapeutic Leads

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Peptide toxins typically bind to their target ion channels or receptors with high potency and selectivity, making them attractive leads for therapeutic development. In some cases the native peptide as it is found in the venom from which it originates can be used directly, but in many instances it is desirable to truncate and/or stabilize the peptide to improve its therapeutic properties. A complementary strategy is to display the key residues that make up the pharmacophore of the peptide toxin on a non-peptidic scaffold, thereby creating a peptidomimetic. This review exemplifies these approaches with peptide toxins from marine organisms, with a particular focus on conotoxins.

Biology, Vol. 2, Pages 861-871: A Versatile Tool for Stable Inhibition of microRNA Activity

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small RNAs (18–22 nt) that post transcriptionally regulate gene expression by binding to complementary sequences on target mRNAs, resulting in translational repression or target degradation and gene silencing. As aberrant expression of miRNAs is implicated in important diseases including cancer miRNA-based therapies are under intensive investigation. We optimized strategies to stably or conditionally generate miRNA inhibitors for a continuous block of miRNA activity that allows for probing miRNA function in long-term cell culture experiments, cancer xenografts, 3D tissue models and for in vivo studies with transgenic organisms.

Viruses, Vol. 5, Pages 1633-1645: Chromatin, Non-Coding RNAs, and the Expression of HIV

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

HIV is a chronic viral infection affecting an estimated 34 million people worldwide. Current therapies employ the use of a cocktail of antiretroviral medications to reduce the spread and effects of HIV, however complete eradication from an individual currently remains unattainable. Viral latency and regulation of gene expression is a key consideration when developing effective treatments. While our understanding of these processes remains incomplete new developments suggest that non-coding RNA (ncRNA) mediated regulation may provide an avenue to controlling both viral expression and latency. Here we discuss the importance of known regulatory mechanisms and suggest directions for further study, in particular the use ncRNAs in controlling HIV expression.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 5, Pages 3172-3189: Comparison of Typhoon Locations over Ocean Surface Observed by Various Satellite Sensors

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

In this study, typhoon eyes have been delineated using wavelet analysis from the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of ocean surface roughness and from the warm area at the cloud top in the infrared (IR) images, respectively. Envisat SAR imagery, and multi-functional transport satellite (MTSAT) and Feng Yun (FY)-2 Chinese meteorological satellite IR imagery were used to examine the typhoons in the western North Pacific from 2005 to 2011. Three cases of various typhoons in different years, locations, and conditions have been used to compare the typhoon eyes derived from SAR (on the ocean surface) with IR (at the cloud-top level) images. Furthermore, the best track data from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA), and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) are checked for the calibration. Because of the vertical wind shear, which acts as an upright tilt, the location of the typhoon eye on the ocean surface differs from that at the top of the clouds. Consequently, the large horizontal distance between typhoon eyes on the ocean surface and on the cloud top implies that the associated vertical wind shear profile is considerably more complex than generally expected. This result demonstrates that SAR can be a useful tool for typhoon monitoring study over the ocean surface.

Molbank, Vol. 2013, Article M803: N-(2-Chloro-5-cyanophenyl)-4,4,4-trifluorobutanamide

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Characterization of the compound was done by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, LC-MS and CHN analysis.

Mathematics, Vol. 1, Pages 76-88: On the Distribution of the spt-Crank

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Andrews, Garvan and Liang introduced the spt-crank for vector partitions. We conjecture that for any n the sequence {NS (m, n)}m is unimodal, where NS (m, n) is the number of S-partitions of size n with crank m weight by the spt-crank. We relate this conjecture to a distributional result concerning the usual rank and crank of unrestricted partitions. This leads to a heuristic that suggests the conjecture is true and allows us to asymptotically establish the conjecture. Additionally, we give an asymptotic study for the distribution of the spt-crank statistic. Finally, we give some speculations about a definition for the spt-crank in terms of "marked" partitions. A "marked" partition is an unrestricted integer partition where each part is marked with a multiplicity number. It remains an interesting and apparently challenging problem to interpret the spt-crank in terms of ordinary integer partitions.
