FolderBrander 2.4 - Change folder icons in the Finder sidebar.. (Shareware)

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 11:42 PM PDT

FolderBrander lets you quickly and easily alter the look of your folders. Mac OS X lets you keep folders in the Dock and the Finder's sidebar. This makes accessing frequently used folders quick and easy. The problem is that without customized folder icons, you cannot tell the folders apart. In many cases, having a short text label over an icon makes it much easier to tell what's in the folder. However, creating such an icon using a graphic app and an icon app can be difficult and time-consuming.

Just pick a base icon and type in a short text label. Two sliders let you rotate and skew the text to match the orientation and perspective of the base icon. To position the text, simply click and drag.

Features:

  • Easily add text to folder icon
  • Rotate/skew text
  • Add text effects
  • Extensible with your own base icons

Version 2.4:
  • Now works on MacBook Pro with Retina Display

Ukelele 2.2.2 - Unicode keyboard layout editor.. (Free)

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 11:39 PM PDT

Ukelele is a Unicode keyboard layout editor for the XML-format keyboard layout files in OS X (".keylayout" files). It provides a graphical interface to the layout files with support for drag-and-drop character assignments, creation of dead keys, and assignment of multi-character strings.

By the way, the name of this software is intentionally misspelled. Call it a case of 'artistic license'.

Version 2.2.2:

  • Fixed a crashing bug when creating a new modifier combination and choosing a copy of an existing key map.
  • Ensure that you cannot create a dead key state with no name, which would cause the keyboard layout to be invalid and hence not usable.
  • Code-signed for Gatekeeper.
  • Toolbar buttons updated for high-resolution (Retina) displays.

Capo 2.1.7 - Slow down and learn to play your favorite songs.. (Shareware)

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 08:59 PM PDT

Capo is a musician's best friend. It lets you slow down your favorite songs, so you can hear the notes and learn how they are played. And, you can tab out your songs in record time atop a highly-detailed OpenCL-powered spectrogram display!

It's your music
No longer do you have to rely on the musical tastes of others to learn music. Drag songs right from your music collection into capo to start learning them.

Tab it out!
By simply drawing atop the spectrogram, Capo will generate tablature automatically for you. It really doesn't get much easier than this!

Detect, and enter chords
Figure out the chords in your music using Capo's sophisticated chord detection routines. Or, enter your own easily using strings like 'bbmaj7' or 'f#maj9'.

Pitch adjustment
Capo lets you adjust the pitch of your songs-so you can change their key or fine tune them to match your instrument.

Markers
Use keyboard shortcuts to mark verses, choruses, bridges, and other important points in your songs so you can return to them later.

Looping
Repeat difficult sections slowly, playing along with your favorite artist. Speed up gradually as you get better.

Music Export
Take your Capo-adjusted music with you. Export speed- and pitch-corrected audio to your iPod, and play along when and where it's most convenient.

Effects
Capo lets you modify panning, adjust a 10-band graphic equalizer, and apply vocal reduction to help you isolate the parts of the music you wish to learn.

Version 2.1.7:
  • Capo no longer crashes on launch for some OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion users.
  • On Retina display Macs, Capo now forces itself into scaled mode to minimize layout issues. This is a temporary workaround until the next minor update.

Marine Drugs, Vol. 10, Pages 2181-2207: Marine Cyanobacteria Compounds with Anticancer Properties: A Review on the Implication of Apoptosis

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Marine cyanobacteria have been considered a rich source of secondary metabolites with potential biotechnological applications, namely in the pharmacological field. Chemically diverse compounds were found to induce cytoxicity, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. The potential of marine cyanobacteria as anticancer agents has however been the most explored and, besides cytotoxicity in tumor cell lines, several compounds have emerged as templates for the development of new anticancer drugs. The mechanisms implicated in the cytotoxicity of marine cyanobacteria compounds in tumor cell lines are still largely overlooked but several studies point to an implication in apoptosis. This association has been related to several apoptotic indicators such as cell cycle arrest, mitochondrial dysfunctions and oxidative damage, alterations in caspase cascade, alterations in specific proteins levels and alterations in the membrane sodium dynamics. In the present paper a compilation of the described marine cyanobacterial compounds with potential anticancer properties is presented and a review on the implication of apoptosis as the mechanism of cell death is discussed.

Animals, Vol. 2, Pages 529-539: Pet Ownership and Evacuation Prior to Hurricane Irene

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Pet ownership has historically been one of the biggest risk factors for evacuation failure prior to natural disasters. The forced abandonment of pets during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 made national headlines and led to the passage of the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS, 2006) which mandated local authorities to plan for companion animal evacuation. Hurricane Irene hit the East Coast of the United States in 2011, providing an excellent opportunity to examine the impact of the PETS legislation on frequency and ease of evacuation among pet owners and non-pet owners. Ninety pet owners and 27 non-pet owners who lived in mandatory evacuation zones completed questionnaires assessing their experiences during the hurricane and symptoms of depression, PTSD, dissociative experiences, and acute stress. Pet ownership was not found to be a statistical risk factor for evacuation failure. However, many pet owners who failed to evacuate continue to cite pet related reasons.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 13249-13283: Towards a Ubiquitous User Model for Profile Sharing and Reuse

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

People interact with systems and applications through several devices and are willing to share information about preferences, interests and characteristics. Social networking profiles, data from advanced sensors attached to personal gadgets, and semantic web technologies such as FOAF and microformats are valuable sources of personal information that could provide a fair understanding of the user, but profile information is scattered over different user models. Some researchers in the ubiquitous user modeling community envision the need to share user model's information from heterogeneous sources. In this paper, we address the syntactic and semantic heterogeneity of user models in order to enable user modeling interoperability. We present a dynamic user profile structure based in Simple Knowledge Organization for the Web (SKOS) to provide knowledge representation for ubiquitous user model. We propose a two-tier matching strategy for concept schemas alignment to enable user modeling interoperability. Our proposal is proved in the application scenario of sharing and reusing data in order to deal with overweight and obesity.

IJERPH, Vol. 9, Pages 3454-3464: Oral Care during Pregnancy: Attitudes of Brazilian Public Health Professionals

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

There is little information about health professionals' behavior regarding oral health care during pregnancy. We evaluated attitudes of obstetricians/gynecologists, nurses, and dentists working at a public community service towards pregnant women's oral health. Health professionals responded to a self-applied questionnaire. Cluster analysis identified two clusters of respondents; Chi-square, Student's t test, and logistic regression were used to compare the two clusters in terms of the independent variables. Respondents were categorized into cluster 1 'less favorable' (n = 159) and cluster 2 'more favorable' (n = 124) attitudes. Professionals that had attended a residency or specialization program (OR = 2.08, 95% CI = 1.15–3.77, p = 0.016) and worked exclusively at the public service (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.10–4.20, p = 0.025) presented more favorable attitudes. Obstetricians/gynecologists (OR = 0.22, 95% CI = 0.09–0.54, p = 0.001) and nurses (OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.29–0.86, p = 0.013) showed less favorable attitudes than dentists. Health care providers' attitudes regarding pregnant women's oral health were related to their occupation, qualification, and dedication to the public service.

Insects, Vol. 3, Pages 912-929: Spread of a Gammabaculovirus within Larval Populations of Its Natural Balsam Fir Sawfly (Neodiprion abietis) Host Following Its Aerial Application

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Field trials and assessments of the balsam fir sawfly (Neodiprion abietis) nucleopolyhedrovirus (NeabNPV: Baculoviridae, Gammabaculovirus) against its natural host were conducted in July and August 2002 near Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, in naturally regenerated, precommercially thinned stands dominated by balsam fir (Abies balsamea). Two experimental blocks, each with its own untreated control, were established. The purpose of the Island Pond block was to examine the spread of NeabNPV from a 313-ha aerial treatment block out into adjacent populations of balsam fir sawflies. The purpose of the Old Man's Pond block (2,093 ha) was to determine whether NeabNPV could disperse into populations of balsam fir sawflies within a 200-m zone between spray swaths. NeabNPV was applied to treatment blocks by a Cessna 188B AgTruck aircraft equipped with MicronAir AU4000 rotary atomizers at an application rate equivalent to 1 × 109 NeabNPV occlusion bodies/ha in 2.5 L of 20% aqueous molasses. At Island Pond, NeabNPV infection increased with time following the spray, especially for individuals close to the treatment block, and infection rate decreased to a measured distance of 400 m from the treatment block. At Old Man's Pond, NeabNPV infection rose higher (80% vs. 15%) and sawfly densities declined more (84% vs. 60%) in the area between spray swaths than in the control block.

Marine Drugs, Vol. 10, Pages 2166-2180: Sarcophine-Diol Inhibits Expression of COX-2, Inhibits Activity of cPLA2, Enhances Degradation of PLA2 and PLCγ1 and Inhibits Cell Membrane Permeability in Mouse Melanoma B16F10 Cells

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Sarcophine-diol (SD) is a semi-synthetic derivative of sarcophine with a significant chemopreventive effect against non-melanoma skin cancer both in vitro and in vivo. Recently, we have studied the effect of SD on melanoma development using the mouse melanoma B16F10 cell line. In this study, our findings show that SD suppresses cell multiplication and diminishes membrane permeability for ethidium bromide (EB), a model marker used to measure cell permeability for Ca2+ ions. SD also decreases protein levels of COX-2, and increases degradation of phospholipases PLA2 and PLCγ1 and diminishes enzymatic activity of the Ca2+-dependent cPLA2. This lower membrane permeability for Ca2+-ions, associated with SD, is most likely due to the diminished content of lysophosphosphatidylcholine (lysoPC) within cell membranes caused by the effect of SD on PLA2. The decrease in diacylglycerol (DAG) and inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3) due to inhibition of PLCγ1, leads to the downregulation of Ca2+-dependent processes within the cell and also inhibits the formation of tumors. These findings support our previous data suggesting that SD may have significant potential in the treatment of melanoma.

JSAN, Vol. 1, Pages 166-182: Low Cost Multisensor Kinematic Positioning and Navigation System with Linux/RTAI

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Despite its popularity, the development of an embedded real-time multisensor kinematic positioning and navigation system discourages many researchers and developers due to its complicated hardware environment setup and time consuming device driver development. To address these issues, this paper proposed a multisensor kinematic positioning and navigation system built on Linux with Real Time Application Interface (RTAI), which can be constructed in a fast and economical manner upon popular hardware platforms. The authors designed, developed, evaluated and validated the application of Linux/RTAI in the proposed system for the integration of the low cost MEMS IMU and OEM GPS sensors. The developed system with Linux/RTAI as the core of a direct geo-referencing system provides not only an excellent hard real-time performance but also the conveniences for sensor hardware integration and real-time software development. A software framework is proposed in this paper for a universal kinematic positioning and navigation system with loosely-coupled integration architecture. In addition, general strategies of sensor time synchronization in a multisensor system are also discussed. The success of the loosely-coupled GPS-aided inertial navigation Kalman filter is represented via post-processed solutions from road tests.

Entropy, Vol. 14, Pages 1842-1863: A Survey on Interference Networks: Interference Alignment and Neutralization

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

In recent years, there has been rapid progress on understanding Gaussian networks with multiple unicast connections, and new coding techniques have emerged. The essence of multi-source networks is how to efficiently manage interference that arises from the transmission of other sessions. Classically, interference is removed by orthogonalization (in time or frequency). This means that the rate per session drops inversely proportional to the number of sessions, suggesting that interference is a strong limiting factor in such networks. However, recently discovered interference management techniques have led to a paradigm shift that interference might not be quite as detrimental after all. The aim of this paper is to provide a review of these new coding techniques as they apply to the case of time-varying Gaussian networks with multiple unicast connections. Specifically, we review interference alignment and ergodic interference alignment for multi-source single-hop networks and interference neutralization and ergodic interference neutralization for multi-source multi-hop networks. We mainly focus on the "degrees of freedom" perspective and also discuss an approximate capacity characterization.

Pharmaceuticals, Vol. 5, Pages 1063-1078: Statistical Estimation of the Protein-Ligand Binding Free Energy Based On Direct Protein-Ligand Interaction Obtained by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

We have developed a method for estimating protein-ligand binding free energy (DG) based on the direct protein-ligand interaction obtained by a molecular dynamics simulation. Using this method, we estimated the DG value statistically by the average values of the van der Waals and electrostatic interactions between each amino acid of the target protein and the ligand molecule. In addition, we introduced fluctuations in the accessible surface area (ASA) and dihedral angles of the protein-ligand complex system as the entropy terms of the DG estimation. The present method included the fluctuation term of structural change of the protein and the effective dielectric constant. We applied this method to 34 protein-ligand complex structures. As a result, the correlation coefficient between the experimental and calculated DG values was 0.81, and the average error of DG was 1.2 kcal/mol with the use of the fixed parameters. These results were obtained from a 2 nsec molecular dynamics simulation.

Pharmaceuticals, Vol. 5, Pages 1053-1062: Cell-Penetrating Recombinant Peptides for Potential Use in Agricultural Pest Control Applications

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Several important areas of interest intersect in a class of peptides characterized by their highly cationic and partly hydrophobic structure. These molecules have been called cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) because they possess the ability to translocate across cell membranes. This ability makes these peptides attractive candidates for delivery of therapeutic compounds, especially to the interior of cells. Compounds with characteristics similar to CPPs and that, in addition, have antimicrobial properties are being investigated as antibiotics with a reduced risk of causing resistance. These CPP-like membrane-acting antimicrobial peptides (MAMPs) are α-helical amphipathic peptides that interact with and perturb cell membranes to produce their antimicrobial effects. One source of MAMPs is spider venom. Because these compounds are toxic to insects, they also show promise for development as biological agents for control of insecticide-resistant agricultural pests. Spider venom is a potential source of novel insect-specific peptide toxins. One example is the small amphipathic α-helical peptide lycotoxin-1 (Lyt-1 or LCTX) from the wolf spider (Lycosa carolinensis). One side of the α-helix has mostly hydrophilic and the other mainly hydrophobic amino acid residues. The positive charge of the hydrophilic side interacts with negatively charged prokaryotic membranes and the hydrophobic side associates with the membrane lipid bilayer to permeabilize it. Because the surface of the exoskeleton, or cuticle, of an insect is highly hydrophobic, to repel water and dirt, it would be expected that amphipathic compounds could permeabilize it. Mutagenized lycotoxin 1 peptides were produced and expressed in yeast cultures that were fed to fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) larvae to identify the most lethal mutants. Transgenic expression of spider venom toxins such as lycotoxin-1 in plants could provide durable insect resistance.

Entropy, Vol. 14, Pages 1829-1841: On Extracting Probability Distribution Information from Time Series

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Time-series (TS) are employed in a variety of academic disciplines. In this paper we focus on extracting probability density functions (PDFs) from TS to gain an insight into the underlying dynamic processes. On discussing this "extraction" problem, we consider two popular approaches that we identify as histograms and Bandt–Pompe. We use an information-theoretic method to objectively compare the information content of the concomitant PDFs.

Entropy, Vol. 14, Pages 1813-1828: Network Coding for Line Networks with Broadcast Channels

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

An achievable rate region for line networks with edge and node capacity constraints and broadcast channels (BCs) is derived. The region is shown to be the capacity region if the BCs are orthogonal, deterministic, physically degraded, or packet erasure with one-bit feedback. If the BCs are physically degraded with additive Gaussian noise then independent Gaussian inputs achieve capacity.

Sustainability, Vol. 4, Pages 2366-2376: Is Sustainablity Possible in Protected Areas in Mexico? Deer as an Example of a Renewable Resource

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

In 2000, Mexico's National Commission of Protected Areas (CONANP) was created to encourage the protection, management and restoration of natural and cultural resources and their conservation. Protected areas were recently increased by more than 3 million hectares, for a current total of more than 25 million hectares, corresponding to 174 protected areas that cover 12.90% of the country's surface area. The information obtained by research helps us understand both biodiversity and ecological processes, as well as the social and economic phenomena that influence the use of ecosystems. In Mexico there are four species of deer: white-tailed deer, mule deer, red brocket and brown brocket. These ungulates have been an important part of the diet of indigenous people and rural communities, and represent an important resource for sport and trophy hunting. We found the best deer populations in protected areas; these can therefore maintain the gene pool and serve as source populations for other areas. These populations are also useful from a research perspective. People living in some protected areas continue to use natural resources such as deer, and also receive economic inputs to develop ecotourism programs, and support from the government for the environmental services derived from conserving biodiversity.

IJERPH, Vol. 9, Pages 3437-3453: A Coupling Kinetics Model for Pollutant Release and Transport in the Process of Landfill Settlement

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

A coupling kinetics model is developed to simulate the release and transport of landfill leachate pollutants in a deformable municipal solid waste landfill by taking into account of landfill settlement, seepage of leachate water, hydrolyse of insoluble and degradable organic pollutants in solid phase, biodegradation of soluble and degradable organic pollutants in solid phase and aqueous one, growth of aerobic and anaerobic microorganism, and consumption of dissolved oxygen. The release and transport of organic pollutants and microorganisms in landfills in the process of landfill settlement was simulated by considering no hydraulic effect. Simulation results demonstrated that the interaction between landfill settlement and the release, transport and biodegradation of landfill leachate pollutants was significant. Porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity were not constants because of the landfill settlement, which affected the release, transport and biodegradation of landfill leachate pollutants, and furthermore acted on the landfill settlement. The simulation results accorded with the practical situation, which preliminarily verified the reliability of the mathematical model and the numerical program in this paper.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 3817-3834: Integrated Coordinated Optimization Control of Automatic Generation Control and Automatic Voltage Control in Regional Power Grids

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Automatic Generation Control (AGC) and Automatic Voltage Control (AVC) are key approaches to frequency and voltage regulation in power systems. However, based on the assumption of decoupling of active and reactive power control, the existing AGC and AVC systems work independently without any coordination. In this paper, a concept and method of hybrid control is introduced to set up an Integrated Coordinated Optimization Control (ICOC) system for AGC and AVC. Concerning the diversity of control devices and the characteristics of discrete control interaction with a continuously operating power system, the ICOC system is designed in a hierarchical structure and driven by security, quality and economic events, consequently reducing optimization complexity and realizing multi-target quasi-optimization. In addition, an innovative model of Loss Minimization Control (LMC) taking into consideration active and reactive power regulation is proposed to achieve a substantial reduction in network losses and a cross iterative method for AGC and AVC instructions is also presented to decrease negative interference between control systems. The ICOC system has already been put into practice in some provincial regional power grids in China. Open-looping operation tests have proved the validity of the presented control strategies.

IJMS, Vol. 13, Pages 12412-12427: Influence of the Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone Concentration on Particle Size and Dispersion of ZnS Nanoparticles Synthesized by Microwave Irradiation

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Zinc sulfide semiconductor nanoparticles were synthesized in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone via a simple microwave irradiation method. The effect of the polymer concentration and the type of sulfur source on the particle size and dispersion of the final ZnS nanoparticle product was carefully examined. Microwave heating generally occurs by two main mechanisms: dipolar polarization of water and ionic conduction of precursors. The introduction of the polymer affects the heating rate by restriction of the rotational motion of dipole molecules and immobilization of ions. Consequently, our results show that the presence of the polymer strongly affects the nucleation and growth rates of the ZnS nanoparticles and therefore determines the average particle size and the dispersion. Moreover, we found that PVP adsorbed on the surface of the ZnS nanoparticles by interaction of the C–N and C=O with the nanoparticle's surface, thereby affording protection from agglomeration by steric hindrance. Generally, with increasing PVP concentration, mono-dispersed colloidal solutions were obtained and at the optimal PVP concentration (5%), sufficiently small size and narrow size distributions were obtained from both sodium sulfide and thioacetamide sulfur sources. Finally, the sulfur source directly influences the reaction mechanism and the final particle morphology, as well as the average size.

IJMS, Vol. 13, Pages 12401-12411: Anti-Inflammatory and Analgesic Activities of a Novel Biflavonoid from Shells of Camellia oleifera

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Shells are by-products of oil production from Camellia oleifera which have not been harnessed effectively. The purpose of this research is to isolate flavonoid from shells of Camellia oleifera and evaluate its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The flavonoid was identified as bimolecular kaempferol structure by UV, MS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra, which is a new biflavonoid and first found in Camellia oleifera. It showed dose-dependent anti-inflammatory activity by carrageenin-induced paw oedema in rats and croton oil induced ear inflammation in mice, and analgesic activity by hot plate test and acetic acid induced writhing. The mechanism of anti-inflammation of biflavonoid is related to both bradykinin and prostaglandins synthesis inhibition. The biflavonoid showed both central and peripheral analgesic effects different from aspirin, inhibition of the synthesis or action of prostaglandins may contribute to analgesic effect of biflavonoid. The biflavonoid significantly decreased malonaldehyde (MDA) and increased superoxidase dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in serum (p < 0.01), revealed strong free radical scavenging activity in vivo. It indicates the biflavonoid can control inflammation and pain by eliminating free radical so as to inhibit the mediators and decrease the prostaglandins. The biflavonoid can be used as a prospective medicine for inflammation and pain.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 3803-3816: Characterization of Woodchips for Energy from Forestry and Agroforestry Production

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

We set out to determine the particle-size distribution, the fiber, the bark and the leaves content, the heating value, the CNH and the ash content of a wide sample of wood chips, collected from 10 forestry and 10 agroforestry production sources. This sampling focused on two main production types: forestry (Full Tree System—FTS—and logging residues—LR) and agroforestry (Short Rotation Coppice—SRC). For the forestry production wood chips from coniferous and broadleaf species were considered. For the agroforestry production wood chips from poplar plantations were examined (different clones with two different harvesting intervals). Overall, we collected 400 samples. Particle size distribution was determined with an automatic screening device on 200 samples. The higher heating value was determined on 200 subsamples using an adiabatic bomb calorimeter. The CNH and the ash content was ascertained on another 200 subsamples. FTS and SRC (with three year old sprouts) offered the best quality, with high fiber content (71%–80%), favorable particle-size distribution and good energetic parameters. On the contrary, both logging residues and SRC (with two year old sprouts) presented a high bark content (18%–27%) and occasionally a mediocre particle-size distribution, being often too rich in fines (6%–12%), but the energetic parameters are in the normal range.

Materials, Vol. 5, Pages 1774-1786: Pressure Dependence of 15N Chemical Shifts in Model Peptides Ac-Gly-Gly-X-Ala-NH2

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

High pressure NMR spectroscopy has developed into an important tool for studying conformational equilibria of proteins in solution. We have studied the amide proton and nitrogen chemical shifts of the 20 canonical amino acids X in the random-coil model peptide Ac-Gly-Gly-X-Ala-NH2, in a pressure range from 0.1 to 200 MPa, at a proton resonance frequency of 800 MHz. The obtained data allowed the determination of first and second order pressure coefficients with high accuracy at 283 K and pH 6.7. The mean first and second order pressure coefficients and for nitrogen are 2.91 ppm/GPa and −2.32 ppm/GPa2, respectively. The corresponding values and for the amide protons are 0.52 ppm/GPa and −0.41 ppm/GPa2. Residual dependent 1J1H15N-coupling constants are shown.

Materials, Vol. 5, Pages 1752-1773: Hard-X-ray Zone Plates: Recent Progress

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The technology to focus hard-X-rays (photon energy larger than 1–2 keV) has made great progress in the past three years. The progress was particularly spectacular for lenses based on the Fresnel zone plate concept. The spatial resolution notably increased by a factor of three, opening up entirely new domains of application, specifically in biomedical research. As we shall see, this evolution is the result of a painstaking optimization of many different aspects rather than of a single technical breakthrough.
