Wii U out on December 8 in Japan

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 01:09 AM PDT

System to come in two bundles, priced at 26,250 ($338) and 31,500 ($405) yen respectively.

Nintendo has finally revealed the price and release date of the Wii U in Japan during a recent live stream presentation on September 13. Details for the rest of the world are expected to be disclosed at Nintendo events being held in the US and Europe in the next few hours.

The upcoming system will be out in Japan on December 8 this year. There will be two bundles on sale with two different prices. The basic bundle will cost 26,250 yen ($338) and contains a white Wii U with 8GB memory. The premium bundle will cost 31,500 yen ($405) and contains a black Wii U, a Wii U gamepad charging dock and stand, a Wii U console stand, and 32GB memory. Both bundles come with a Wii U gamepad, a Wii U AC adaptor, an HDMI cable and a Wii U gamepad stylus.

The Wii U gamepad will cost gamers 13,440 yen ($173) if purchased separately. The Wii Pro controller will cost gamers 5,040 yen ($65). Wii accessories will not be available with the aforementioned bundles; customers will have to buy the Wii remote, nunchuk and sensor bar separately.

New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand will both be launch titles for the Wii U; the former will cost 5,985 yen ($77) while the latter will cost 4,985 yen ($64). Nintendo also announced a Nintendo Network Premium plan where it provides points for game and software purchases, with a 10 percent points return for digital purchases. The program will run until December 2014.

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the system will support full HD 1080p resolution and has 2GB memory; 1GB will be used for running games while the other 1GB is for running the system's operating system. The game discs for the Wii U will contain up to 25GB, with the device will be able to read up to 22.5mb per second.

This story will be updated shortly with the North American and European release dates and prices. Nintendo's software announcements for the Wii U will start on September 13 at 11pm JST (7am PST). Hot Mouse Flower 1.2 - Customizable virtual keyboard utility.. (Free)

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 03:19 AM PDT

Hot Mouse Flower is a customizable virtual keyboard utility.

The virtual key panel, the Flower, is triggered with a custom shortcut key and will appear in front of all application windows. The virtual key panel is arranged in a flower pattern centered on the current cursor position, for quick access to any of the keys. Clicking on a key will send that key to the fore-most application, simultaneously holding down one or more modifier keys will combine them with the clicked Flower key, this allows you to trigger multiple Hot Key combinations with the same single Hot Mouse Flower key.

The Flower will stay open so you can repeat click a key or several keys after each other. Moving the cursor over the Exit zone will instantly hide the Flower, without the need of a mouse click. Tapping the Escape key will also close the Flower.

  • Perfect for mouse lovers, one hand on the keyboard and one on your mouse.
  • Keeps your focus on the screen.
  • Improves productivity.

The Hot Mouse Flower app is free, and if you like using it, we'd love to receive small donations to help fund further development.

Societies, Vol. 2, Pages 195-209: Youth for Sale: Using Critical Disability Perspectives to Examine the Embodiment of ‘Youth’

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

'Youth' is more complicated than an age-bound period of life; although implicitly paired with developmentalism, youth is surrounded by contradictory discourses. In other work [1], I have asserted that young people are demonized as risky and rebellious, whilst simultaneously criticized for being lazy and apathetic; two intertwining, yet conflicting discourses meaning that young people's here-and-now experiences take a backseat to a focus on reaching idealized, neoliberal adulthood [2]. Critical examination of adulthood ideals, however, shows us that 'youthfulness' is itself presented as a goal of adulthood [3–5], as there is a desire, as adults, to remain forever young [6]. As Blatterer puts it, the ideal is to be "adult and youthful but not adolescent" ([3], p. 74). This paper attempts to untangle some of the youth/adult confusion by asking how the aspiration/expectation of a youthful body plays out in the embodied lives of young dis/abled people. To do this, I use a feminist-disability lens to consider youth in an abstracted form, not as a life-stage, but as the end goal of an aesthetic project of the self that we are all (to differing degrees) encouraged to set out upon.

Insects, Vol. 3, Pages 857-869: Does Patriline Composition Change over a Honey Bee Queen’s Lifetime?

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

A honey bee queen mates with a number of drones a few days after she emerges as an adult. Spermatozoa of different drones are stored in her spermatheca and used for the rest of the queen's life to fertilize eggs. Sperm usage is thought to be random, so that the patriline distribution within a honey bee colony would remain constant over time. In this study we assigned the progeny of a naturally mated honey bee queen to patrilines using microsatellite markers at the queen's age of two, three and four years. No significant changes in patriline distribution occurred within each of two foraging seasons, with samples taken one and five months apart, respectively. Overall and pair-wise comparisons between the three analyzed years reached significant levels. Over the three-year period we found a trend for patrilines to become more equally represented with time. It is important to note that this study was performed with a single queen, and thus individual and population variation in sperm usage patterns must be assessed. We discuss long-term changes in patriline composition due to mixing processes in the queen's spermatheca, following incomplete mixing of different drones' sperm after mating.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 4, Pages 2635-2660: Flux Measurements in Cairo. Part 2: On the Determination of the Spatial Radiation and Energy Balance Using ASTER Satellite Data

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

This study highlights the possibilities and constraints of determining instantaneous spatial surface radiation and land heat fluxes from satellite images in a heterogeneous urban area and its agricultural and natural surroundings. Net radiation was determined using ASTER satellite data and MODTRAN radiative transfer calculations. The soil heat flux was estimated with two empirical methods using radiative terms and vegetation indices. The turbulent heat fluxes finally were determined with the LUMPS (Local-Scale Urban Meteorological Parameterization Scheme) and the ARM (Aerodynamic Resistance Method) method. Results were compared to in situ measured ground data. The performance of the atmospheric correction was found to be crucial for the estimation of the radiation balance and thereafter the heat fluxes. The soil heat flux could be modeled satisfactorily by both of the applied approaches. The LUMPS method, for the turbulent fluxes, appeals by its simplicity. However, a correct spatial estimation of associated parameters could not always be achieved. The ARM method showed the better spatial results for the turbulent heat fluxes. In comparison with the in situ measurements however, the LUMPS approach rendered the better results than the ARM method.

Molecules, Vol. 17, Pages 11079-11088: Cyclizations Producing Hydrindanones with Two Methyl Groups at the Juncture Positions Mediated by Samarium Diiodide and Electrolysis

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT

One-electron reductive intramolecular cyclization of enones with ketones or aldehydes mediated by samarium diiodide and electrolysis to afford cis-trimethyl- hydrindanolones. The reactions gave selectivities ranging from 1:1 to 100:0 depending on the conditions.
