Posted: 24 Sep 2012 12:00 AM PDT Often centralized water supply, sanitation and solid waste services struggle to keep up with the rapid expansion of urban areas. The peri-urban areas are at the forefront of this expansion and it is here where decentralized technologies are increasingly being implemented. The introduction of decentralized technologies allows for the development of new opportunities that enable the recovery and reuse of resources in the form of water, nutrients and energy. This resource-oriented management of water, nutrients and energy requires a sustainable system aimed at low resource use and high recovery and reuse rates. Instead of investigating each sector separately, as has been traditionally done, this article proposes and discusses a concept that seeks to combine the in- and outflows of the different sectors, reusing water and other liberated resources where possible. This paper shows and demonstrates examples of different types of sustainable technologies that can be implemented in the peri-urban areas of Mexico City [rainwater harvesting, EcoSan and biofiltros (small constructed wetlands), and (vermi-)composting]. An innovative participatory planning method, combining scenario development with a participatory planning workshop with key stakeholders, was applied and resulted in three concept scenarios. Specific technologies were then selected for each concept scenario that the technical feasibility and applicability was assessed. Following this, the resulting resource flows (nutrients, water and energy) were determined and analyzed. The results show that decentralized technologies not only have the potential to deliver adequate water supply, sanitation and solid waste services in peri-urban areas and lessen environmental pollution, but also can recover significant amounts of resources thereby saving costs and providing valuable inputs in, for instance, the agricultural sector. Social acceptance of the technologies and institutional cooperation, however, is key for successful implementation. |
PresSTORE 4.4.4 - Data management system for data backup/distribution.. (Demo) Posted: 25 Sep 2012 03:11 AM PDT PresSTORE combines all requirements of a holistic and integrated data management system. With PresSTORE data is managed from its creation, followed by the necessary backup and up to its archiving. Its modular design allows optimal adaptation to customer requirements. In case of continuously growing production data volume customers can easily add further modules or server and clients. This offers customers more flexibility, more security, more efficient storage, an optimal engagement of resources and a considerable reduction of costs. PresSTORE comprises three modules:
PresSTORE Backup - PresSTORE Backup is a fully automatic backup and restore solution. It provides all the necessary functions to ensure an optimal backup of production data and offers numerous possibilities to cope with diverse user requirements. High capability and high reliability, the modular and scalable design and cross-platform support are only some of the numerous features of PresSTORE Backup. PresSTORE Synchronize - PresSTORE Synchronize is a solution for synchronizing media data. In many segments of companies, simple data backup mechanisms are not sufficient to secure your uninterrupted production, for which the data must be immediately available virtually all the time. A backup to tapes or to a disc cannot meet this requirement.PresSTORE Synchronize closes this security hole. Data are duplicated near real-time which ensure a maximum of data security. PresSTORE Archive - PresSTORE Archive is a solution for archiving data. PresSTORE allows you to easily and efficiently tag and describe your data, both before and after archiving. Depending on the volume of your data, performance and security requirements, tape or optical media can be employed. Version 4.4.4:

Beneath A Steel Sky sequel greenlit Posted: 25 Sep 2012 12:04 AM PDT Revolution Studios planning PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux release for adventure game sequel.
Adventure game developer Revolution Studios is planning on making a sequel to 1994 adventure game title Beneath a Steel Sky, despite the fact that its recent Kickstarter page for Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse fell short of meeting its target goal. The original plan was that the studio would greenlight Beneath a Steel Sky 2 if the Broken Sword Kickstarter goal reached $1 million or higher. The final goal reached $771,561 with 14,032 backers. According to an interview from website Develop (via The Verge), Revolution co-founder Tony Warriner said that the company was delighted by the huge interest in the franchise. "[We are] currently discussing design ideas for this project which we plan to go into development following the release of Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse." The company plans to make a PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux version of the sequel. Currently, a remastered version of the first game is out on the iOS app store. Platinum Games wants to take its titles to PC Posted: 25 Sep 2012 12:03 AM PDT Creator of Bayonetta and Anarchy Reigns wants to release upcoming games through Valve's Steam service and also start Kickstarter pages for future projects.
Platinum Games, the developer behind Bayonetta and the upcoming Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and The Wonderful 10, seem keens to expand its game-making talent beyond consoles. According to an article from Polygon, the company's executive director Atsushi Inaba said that it's interested in creating games for the PC and publishing them through Valve's Steam downloadable games service. It also plans to fund its upcoming projects via Kickstarter. "We haven't released anything on Steam yet, or any PC games for that matter, so I'm not in a position to encourage other people to do so. However, I used to belong to a big publisher [Capcom]. And if you're at a big publisher, business gets carried on just seeing your game on console. Many publishers don't view PC as an important platform." He views the PC market as an area with huge potential. "If you think about the console market in Japan and compare it to the world, it's not that big." The director recently visited Steam and Half-Life creator Valve during the PAX Prime video game convention in Seattle. What he was allowed to speak about at this point in time was that the company was open-minded, as well as its future goals and company direction. In related news, the company also told Polygon that it is also interested in Nintendo's 3DS. Inaba said that he views it as a proper evolution of an already-successful device. "Being able to view stereoscopic 3D with the naked eye is a great innovation, but very straightforward, so I'm very interested in it. Currently we have a lot of titles in development, and we can't fund a 3DS game ourselves. So there's nothing in the works. But I'm very positive on it." Platinum Games is currently working on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, The Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2. Tokyo Game Show 2012 sets new attendance record Posted: 24 Sep 2012 10:55 PM PDT TGS organizer CESA says this year's show attracted the highest total number of visitors compared to past years; TGS 2013 scheduled for September 19-22 at Makuhari Messe.
Tokyo Game Show organiser Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) has revealed that this year's show broke attendance records. According to CESA, TGS 2012 attracted a total number of 223,753 visitors, which is around 1,085 more visitors than last year. (For comparison, TGS 2011 recorded 222,668 people; TGS 2009 and 2010 attracted 185,030 and 207,647 visitors, respectively.) CESA said that that 209 companies from 19 different countries exhibited at this year's TGS, with the focus of this year's show geared more towards mobile and social gaming, compared to console and PC. CESA also touted its Asia game business summit, in which key speakers from the Chinese, South Korean, Indonesian, and Japanese gaming industry discussed the future of the games market in the region, as well as the inclusion of eight new companies from Asia, including Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Next year's Tokyo Game Show has been scheduled for September 19-22, 2013 at Makuhari Messe, just outside Tokyo. Head over to GameSpot's official TGS 2012 page for all related news and content. PopCap shuts down Dublin studio Posted: 24 Sep 2012 09:35 PM PDT PopCap Mobile associate producer JP Vaughan confirms Dublin studio closure; says staff had 30 days to prepare.
Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies creator PopCap has shut down its Dublin studio, according to PopCap Mobile associate producer JP Vaughan. Vaughan Tweeted the news yesterday, saying that staff at the studio had 30 days to prepare. Last month, PopCap cut its North American presence by around 50 people, and said it was investigating shutting down its Dublin operation. At the time, PopCap co-founder John Vechey said that Electronic Arts--who bought PopCap for more than $750 million in July last year--did not push for the reorganisation, saying: " if we didn't have EA behind us, the cuts would have been worse." Last month, PopCap announced that its tower-defence sequel Plants vs. Zombies 2 will arrive late in the first half of 2013. Wii U will be region-locked - Report Posted: 24 Sep 2012 09:18 PM PDT Nintendo reportedly confirmed new console will follow in the footsteps of the Wii and 3DS by implementing a region-locking feature.
Nintendo has reportedly confirmed the Wii U will be region-locked. The publisher made the original statement in the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (as reported by GameSpot sister site CNET), seemingly confirming the Wii U--just like the Wii and 3DS before it--will not allow gamers to play titles imported from other regions. Nintendo's region-locking policy has been in place since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System for some of its devices, and has often been the cause of discontent among gamers. The Wii U will launch on November 18 in the U.S. The system will be available in two bundles: a $299 8GB white basic model and a $350 32GB deluxe black version. For more on the Wii U launch, check out GameSpot's full report.
