Neat Image 7.0 - Plug-in filter to reduce noise/grain in images.. (Demo)

Posted: 05 May 2011 03:06 AM PDT

Neat Image is a digital filter plug-in designed to reduce visible noise and grain in digital photographic images. It is a tool for owners of digital cameras, flatbed and slide scanners; and is for use by both professional photographers, and digital image processing enthusiasts.

Neat Image not only reduces the high ISO noise associated with image sensors (CMOS, CCD) in digital cameras and scanners, it can also reduce the film grain visible in scanned slides and negatives, JPEG artifacts of overcompressed images, and color banding, and at the same time makes images sharper. Neat Image is indispensable in low-light, sport, and action photography.

Version 7.0:

Changes and improvements:

  • Higher performance: the first GPU-accelerated version of Neat Image plug-in for Photoshop
  • CUDA support: faster noise reduction using modern CUDA-compatible GPUs (on Intel Macs)
For example, on NVidia GTX 285 Neat Image is about x2.5 faster than on Intel i7 and x3-x7 faster than on Intel i5 or Core2 Duo
  • Multiple GPU support
Neat Image works even faster with two or more CUDA GPUs
  • CPUs and GPUs working together
Neat Image can use CPUs and GPUs at the same time for even faster processing
  • Automated optimization of performance settings for multi-core, multi-CPU and multi-GPU systems
    • Built-in benchmark to measure image processing speed on specific hardware
    • Built-in performance optimizer in Neat Image Preferences
More improvements:
  • Support for 32-bit per channel images (in Pro plug-in, in addition to 8-bit and 16-bit ones) to enable HDR post-processing workflows
  • Smart Profile: automatically uses two different profiling methods and selects the better resulting profile for more accurate noise reduction
  • Improved metadata (EXIF) compatibility with the latest Nikon cameras:
    D7000, D3100, P500, P300, P7000, S8100, etc.
  • Added support for Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
  • Photoshop CS3 or later
  • Photoshop Elements 6 or later

IJMS, Vol. 12, Pages 2946-2957: d-(+)-Galactose-Conjugated Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as New Chemical Probes for Electrochemical Biosensors for the Cancer Marker Galectin-3

Posted: 05 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT

d-(+)-Galactose-conjugated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized for use as biosensors to detect the cancer marker galectin-3. To investigate the binding of galectin-3 to the d-(+)-galactose-conjugated SWCNTs, an electrochemical biosensor was fabricated by using molybdenum electrodes. The binding affinities of the conjugated SWCNTs to galectin-3 were quantified using electrochemical sensitivity measurements based on the differences in resistance together with typical I-V characterization. The electrochemical sensitivity measurements of the d-(+)-galactose-conjugated SWCNTs differed significantly between the samples with and without galectin-3. This indicates that d-(+)-galactose-conjugated SWCNTs are potentially useful electrochemical biosensors for the detection of cancer marker galectin-3.

Insects, Vol. 2, Pages 218-231: Phylogeography of the Cactophilic Drosophila and Other Arthropods Associated with Cactus Necroses in the Sonoran Desert

Posted: 05 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Studies on the population genetics, phylogenetic relationships, systematics and evolution of arthropods that inhabit necrotic tissue of cacti in the Sonoran Desert of North America are reviewed. These studies have focused upon several species of insects (orders Diptera and Coleoptera) and arachnids (order Pseudoscorpiones). For most taxa studied, little genetic structure and high dispersal ability are found in populations inhabiting the mainland and Baja California peninsula regions of the Sonoran Desert, consistent with the availability of the rotting cactus microhabitat which is patchily distributed and ephemeral. There is evidence, however, that the Gulf of California, which bisects the Sonoran Desert, has played a role in limiting gene flow and promoting speciation in several taxa, including histerid beetles, whereas other taxa, especially Drosophila nigrospiracula and D. mettleri, apparently are able to freely cross the Gulf, probably by taking advantage of the Midriff Islands in the northern Gulf as dispersal "stepping stones". Genetic evidence has also been found for historical population expansions dating to the Pleistocene and late Pliocene in several taxa. Overall, these studies have provided important insights into how arthropods with different life history traits, but generally restricted to a necrotic cactus microhabitat, have evolved in an environmentally harsh and tectonically active region. In addition, they suggest some taxa for further, and more detailed, hypothesis driven studies of speciation.

Insects, Vol. 2, Pages 210-217: Moving From the Old to the New: Insecticide Research on Bed Bugs since the Resurgence

Posted: 05 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT

The scarcity of bed bugs in many countries over the last 50 years has resulted in a lack of modern research into the toxicology of this pest. Although bed bugs resurged in the late 1990s, published research related to insecticides has lagged behind and only began to appear in 2006. The difficulty in controlling bed bugs triggered the interest of both private and academic sectors to determine the value of currently available insecticides. What follows, is updated information on effectiveness of products, studies on insecticide susceptibility, identification of mechanisms of insecticide resistance and chemical strategies proposed to overcome resistance in modern bed bug populations.
