Translating Ulysses into Twitter

Posted: 25 May 2011 10:37 PM PDT

A Bloomsday project calls on James Joyce fans to translate Ulysses into Twitter-native text that will then be tweeted at 15-minute intervals through June 16. Just no one tell Stephen Joyce, the notoriously litigious Joyce heir who has previously threatened to sue pubs for allowing readings of Ulysses on Bloomsday:
This is not an attempt to tweet mindlessly the entire contents of Ulysses, word-for-word, 140 characters at a time. That would be dull and impossible. What is proposed here is a recasting or a reimagining of the reading experience of this novel, start to finish, within the confines of a day-long series of tweets from a global volunteer army of Joyce-sodden tweeps.

Can you imagine such a thing? Would it be horrific, a train wreck? Or would it be beatific? Who knows. Hence this experiment.

The experiment will be shaped thusly. The @11ysses Twitter account is the stage for this "tweading" of Ulysses. The Bloomsday tweaders are you, anyone in the world who would like to volunteer to take a section of the novel and condense/congeal/cajole it into a string of 4-6 tweets that will be broadcast as a quick burst on @11ysses. "Bloomsday bursts" will be posted every quarter hour starting at 8 o'clock in the morning (Dublin time) on 16 June and continue for the next 24 hours.

Gold-farming in a Chinese forced-labor camp

Posted: 25 May 2011 10:06 PM PDT

The Guardian reports that prisoners in a Chinese forced-labor camp were required to "gold-farm" in multiplayer games, amassing credits and virtual objects that the guards could sell to other players. Prisoners allege that they were required to gold farm for 12 hours a day and were physically abused if they failed to make their quotas. It's alleged that many Chinese forced-labor prisons make their inmates gold farm.
"Prison bosses made more money forcing inmates to play games than they do forcing people to do manual labour," Liu told the Guardian. "There were 300 prisoners forced to play games. We worked 12-hour shifts in the camp. I heard them say they could earn 5,000-6,000rmb [£470-570] a day. We didn't see any of the money. The computers were never turned off."

Memories from his detention at Jixi re-education-through-labour camp in Heilongjiang province from 2004 still haunt Liu. As well as backbreaking mining toil, he carved chopsticks and toothpicks out of planks of wood until his hands were raw and assembled car seat covers that the prison exported to South Korea and Japan. He was also made to memorise communist literature to pay off his debt to society.

But it was the forced online gaming that was the most surreal part of his imprisonment. The hard slog may have been virtual, but the punishment for falling behind was real.

"If I couldn't complete my work quota, they would punish me physically. They would make me stand with my hands raised in the air and after I returned to my dormitory they would beat me with plastic pipes. We kept playing until we could barely see things," he said.

Sony posts $3.17 billion loss, PlayStation division sees $434 million profit

Posted: 26 May 2011 12:41 AM PDT

Electronics giant takes in $87.78 billion in annual revenue; 14.3 PlayStation 3s, 8 million PSPs, 6.4 million PS2s sold during the year.

Today, Sony announced its earnings for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. The results were close to those that had been forecast Monday, with the company suffering a loss for the year of ¥259.6 billion ($3.17 billion) on revenue of ¥7.18 trillion ($87.78 billion). The previous fiscal year, the company lost ¥40.8 billion ($498.59 million) on revenue of ¥7.21 trillion ($88.11 billion).

In its report, Sony said that the biggest factor in the shortfall was the result of a ¥360 billion ($4.4 billion) charge related to deferred tax assets in Japan. The Great East Japan Earthquake was also a factor, as was the fact that sales were down in every division of the corporation save two: the Consumer, Professional & Devices segment, which handles HDTVs and other electronics, and the Networked Products & Services division, which encapsulates Sony Computer Entertainment.

In fact, results were so good at the Networked Products & Services division that Sony credited it with helping bring the company's overall operating income from ¥31.8 billion ($387.94 million) to ¥199.8 billion ($2.44 billion). As for the division itself, it reported ¥35.6 billion ($434.23 million) in operating income, way up from the ¥83.3 billion ($1.01 billion) operating loss it suffered during the previous fiscal year. Overall Networked Products & Services revenue was nearly flat at ¥1.57 trillion ($19.15 billion).

Lowered production costs of the PlayStation 3 were cited as part of the reason for the uptick in Networked Products & Services' operating income. During the year, Sony sold 14.3 million PlayStation 3s, just short of its goal of 15 million, but up from 13 million the year prior. Only 8 million PSPs were sold, down from 9.9 million the year before. Some 6.4 million PlayStation 2s were sold, down from 7.3 million.

Sony also said increased software sales helped its bottom line, and the year saw 147.9 million PS3 games sold, way up from 115.6 million the year before. PSP game sales also climbed from 44.4 million to 46.6 million. However, PS2 games sales nearly halved from 35.7 million to just 16.4 million.

Chinese labor camp prisoners forced to gold farm

Posted: 25 May 2011 11:23 PM PDT

Detainee said that physical punishment would be inflicted if quota not met.

Gold farming may be looked down upon in the world of MMOs, but players cannot deny its existence (or its prevalance). A Jixi labor camp in China has taken the practice of gold farming even further by apparently forcing their prisoners to work in actual coal mines by day and farm for gold in online games at night. An article in The Guardian has detailed the story of a prisoner in the camp by the pseudonym of Liu Dali, who talked about his ordeal.

Dali, who was a former prison guard, stated that "if [he] couldn't complete my work quota, they would punish me physically. They would make me stand with my hands raised in the air and after I returned to my dormitory they would beat me with plastic pipes. We kept playing until we could barely see things."

This particular operation was much more lucrative than the work the prisoners did in the coal mines. "Prison bosses made more money forcing inmates to play games than they do forcing people to do manual labour." He said that a prisoner could earn between 5,000 to 6,000 rmb ($770 to $925), with the money kept by prison officials. Dali added that "many prisons across the north-east of China also forced inmates to play games."

Gold farming is the act of acquiring in-game currency in an MMO and selling it to a customer for a price, usually against the wishes of the game's operator. A 2008 report on the virtual economy on online games from the University of Manchester stated that about 80 percent of all gold farmers are from China.

Catholic Bishops support Aussie R18+ guidelines

Posted: 25 May 2011 09:16 PM PDT

Australian Catholic Bishops "welcomes" proposed guidelines for adult rating for video games; Australian Christian Lobby describes changes as "frightening".

Australia's Federal Government finally released the long-awaited draft guidelines for the possible introduction of an adult rating for games in Australia yesterday, with the proposed changes outlining what type of content would be allowed under an R18+ rating Down Under. While the games industry has welcomed the proposals, another group came out today in support--the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.

In a press statement, the Conference--which represents the official views of the Catholic Church in Australia--outlined that while its preference would be the banning of R18+ games, it acknowledged that such an outcome was not "achievable".

"In an ideal world, the sort of material that is included in R18+ or higher classification films and computer games would never be seen in a civilised democracy. However, it is not an ideal world and, in the real world in which we live, such material unfortunately is produced and is available, sometimes legally and often illegally, within our society," the press statement said. "The preferred position of the Catholic Church is that R18+ material should not be available. But if such an outcome is not achievable then the Australian National Classification Scheme should include an R18+ classification category for computer games."

This is not the first time the Conference has come out in support of the introduction of an R18+ rating Down Under. In its submission to last year¥s Federal Government inquiry into the topic, the Catholic Bishops also stated their preference for an R18+ rating to better control game content in Australia.

Not all Christian groups are on side, however. Vocal minority group, the Australian Christian Lobby, has lambasted the proposed guidelines, describing them as contrary to the interests of parents and children.

"Not only is this proposal contrary to the claim that the introduction of an R18+ category for computer games would protect children by merely relocating existing MA15+ games to a new R18+ category, it would inevitably open the Australian hire and sale markets to a higher level of graphically violent and sexually explicit interactive games," ACL¥s chief of staff Lyle Shelton said in a press statement.

The draft guidelines, which were released by the office of the Federal Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O¥Connor, show that the proposed R18+ rating for games would be applied to titles deemed to feature high impact classifiable elements. The proposals have already been sighted by Australia's state and territory attorneys-general, who will review the guidelines before making a decision on the introduction of an R18+ rating for games at the next SCAG meeting in early July.

Polymers, Vol. 3, Pages 899-914: Synthetic Polymer Scaffolds for Stem Cell Transplantation in Retinal Tissue Engineering

Posted: 26 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa are two leading causes of irreversible blindness characterized by photoreceptor loss. Cell transplantation may be one of the most promising approaches of retinal repair. However, several problems hinder the success of retinal regeneration, including cell delivery and survival, limited cell integration and incomplete cell differentiation. Recent studies show that polymer scaffolds can address these three problems. This article reviews the current literature on synthetic polymer scaffolds used for stem cell transplantation, especially retinal progenitor cells. The advantages and disadvantages of different polymer scaffolds, the role of different surface modifications on cell attachment and differentiation, and controlled drug delivery are discussed. The development of material and surface modification techniques is vital in making cell transplantation a clinical success.

Polymers, Vol. 3, Pages 886-898: Brillouin Scattering in Polymer Optical Fibers: Fundamental Properties and Potential Use in Sensors

Posted: 26 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT

We review the fundamental properties of Brillouin scattering in a perfluorinated graded-index polymer optical fiber (PFGI-POF) with 120 mm core diameter. The experiments were performed at 1.55 mm telecommunication wavelength. The Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) and the Brillouin bandwidth were 2.83 GHz and 105 MHz, respectively. The Brillouin gain coefficient was calculated to be 3.09 × 10−11 m/W, which was comparable to that of fused silica fibers. The Brillouin threshold power of the 100 m POF was estimated to be as high as 24 W, which can be, for practical applications, reduced by using POFs with smaller cores. These properties were compared with those of silica-based graded-index multi-mode fibers. We also investigated the BFS dependences on strain and temperature. They showed negative dependences with coefficients of −121.8 MHz/% and −4.09 MHz/K, respectively, which are −0.2 and −3.5 times as large as those in silica fibers. These BFS dependences indicate that the Brillouin scattering in PFGI-POFs can be potentially applied to high-accuracy temperature sensing with reduced strain sensitivity.
