Molecules, Vol. 16, Pages 4807-4817: Lichtheimia blakesleeana as a New Potencial Producer of Phytase and Xylanase

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Brazil is known for its great potential for production of renewable resources such as agro-industrial residues. These residues can be used as alternative sources of new products. Meanwhile, solid-state fermentation, with its advantages of energy conservation and pollution reduction, has been identified as a process of great potential for the production of bioactive compounds, especially enzymes. In the present work, a 23 factorial design was used to evaluate the effects of pH, temperature and moisture on the production of phytase and xylanase by Lichtheimia blakesleeana URM 5604 through the fermentation of citrus pulp. Statistical analyses of the results showed that the only the pH influenced the production of these enzymes, with the best phytase production (264.68 U/g) ocurring at pH 6.0, 34 °C, initial moisture 50%, after 48 hours of culture. The best conditions for xylanase production (397.82 U/g) were fermentation for 120 hours at pH 4.0, 26 °C and initial moisture of 70%. The best parameters for the simultaneous production of phytase (226.92 U/g) and xylanase (215.59 U/g) were determined to be initial moisture of 50%, pH 6.0, 26 °C, and 48 hours of fermentation.

Symmetry, Vol. 3, Pages 325-364: Polyominoes and Polyiamonds as Fundamental Domains for Isohedral Tilings of Crystal Class D2

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 12:00 AM PDT

We describe computer algorithms that produce the complete set of isohedral tilings by n-omino or n-iamond tiles in which the tiles are fundamental domains and the tilings have pmm, pmg, pgg or cmm symmetry [1]. These symmetry groups are members of the crystal class D2 among the 17 two-dimensional symmetry groups [2]. We display the algorithms' output and give enumeration tables for small values of n. This work is a continuation of our earlier works for the symmetry groups p3, p31m, p3m1, p4, p4g, p4m, p6, and p6m [3–5].

E3 2011: Take On Helicopters Preview Impressions

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 12:41 AM PDT

Bohemia interactive pilots a chopper to the west coast in their E3 2011 demo for this helicopter sim.

Flight sims may be a dying breed, but helicopter flight sims are almost unheard of nowadays. Enter Take On Helicopters, a civilian aviation simulator built using the ARMA II game engine. We chatted with Bohemia Interactive's Jay Crowe, who filled us in on what to expect from Take On Helicopters while he showed off the game in motion.

Who's Making It: Bohemia Interactive is best known for its ARMA games, which are less first-person shooters than they are full-on war simulators. Take On Helicopters isolates the high-fidelity helicopter flight model from the latest ARMA game, and implements it in a spacious civilian flight sim.

What It Looks Like: The gameplay we saw took place over the skies of Seattle. The city was modeled to the last detail, and volumetric clouds, fully reflective mirrors, and normal mapping are just some of the visual aspects Bohemia is proud to be utilizing. The area you have access to is massive--60 square kilometers of space, which is even a greater area than ARMA III will cover.

Impressively, you can also get out of your chopper and walk around it to perform pre-flight inspections and view any damage and interact with doors and other parts of the aircraft. The damage modeling is so accurate that you will see any stress damage appear on the helicopter, as well as feeling its effects on flight. As long as you can land, you can also get out and check out the environments, though landing pads and other areas created for inspection will look much better than random Oregon forests or generic buildings.

What You Do: You don't fire any weapons in Take On Helicopters. The focus is on flight, and to that end, there are campaign missions and random challenges in addition to free flight. (Modders should note that they will be able to create their own missions.) Helicopters come in light, medium, and heavy varieties, each of which possesses its own feel, or "character," as Crowe described it. There is a campaign, though it isn't heavy on cinematic splendor. Instead, it provides light context to your missions.

What They Say: Take On Helicopters is due for release in late October, 2011. It is currently in alpha state, and is entering public beta next month.

What We Say: Take On Helicopters may seek a niche audience, but that audience will eat up the developer's commitment to authenticity.

E3 2011: Beyblade: Metal Masters First Look Hands-On Preview

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 11:15 PM PDT

Tops spin and spirits are summoned in our first look at Beyblade: Metal Masters for the DS.

There has been a long line of games based on the Beyblade manga series, which focuses on young people who battle each other using beyblades: spinning tops imbued with the power of magical spirits. Today we spent a little time at the Konami booth checking out the latest game in the series, Beyblade: Metal Masters for the DS.

At the beginning of the demo, we chose a small team of characters and clicked our way through a few screens of anime-styled art and text that set up the situation. Our heroes had received a letter from a mysterious character named Agito, informing them of the upcoming Beyblade World Championship. Evidence suggested that this Agito might be up to no-good, so the brave young characters determined that they had to win battles to climb up the beyblade ranks and find this Agito. Following this story sequence, we found ourselves launched into a series of beyblade battles.

Before each battle, we had a total of three seconds to mash three buttons. Mashing each button improved one of three attributes of our beyblade in the upcoming match: speed, power and timing. Because inputs don't register if you try to mash multiple buttons at once, you're encouraged to prioritize the attributes that you value the most (filling up the meters for power and speed, for instance, before mashing on the timing button), which lends this simple process a bit of a tactical consideration.

During matches, we used the control pad to move our spinning top around an arena, dashing into the opposing beyblade in an attempt to cause damage or knock it out of the arena. One button called up a shield but prevented us from moving, and some combinations of button presses and directional inputs resulted in special attacks. For instance, one of the beyblades we used in combat was able to briefly sprout wings and speed some distance forward, while a beyblade we battled against was able to summon a dragon spirit that shot straight up out of the ground. We also experienced one head-on clash with an opposing top that resulted in a prompt to mash a button, and our successful mashing of said button stunned our opponent for a brief period of time.

After one battle, we earned something called a fusion wheel, which had wind properties. We didn't get to spend time tinkering with this component, but a representative indicated that in the full game, players will get to do quite a bit of beyblade customization as they progress through the story and unlock new components. The full game will also feature multiplayer competition so that players can pit their customized beyblades against each other, and it seems like that might be where the combat is at its best.

The battles felt a bit slow and simple during our time with the game, but we were only able to scratch the surface; the action may reveal plenty of depth as you progress. With 37 playable characters, plenty of customization options and competitive multiplayer, Beyblade: Metal Masters may have a lot to offer. We'll bring you more on this game as its projected fall release approaches.
