Micromachines, Vol. 4, Pages 1-8: Advanced Capillary Soft Valves for Flow Control in Self-Driven Microfluidics

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 12:00 AM PST

Self-driven microfluidic devices enable fully autonomous handling of very small volumes of liquid samples and reagents. However, many applications require an active control mechanism to trigger self-driven flow in microchannels. Here, we report on capillary soft valves (CSVs), which enable stopping a liquid filling front at a precise location inside a microchannel and can resume flow of liquid upon simple actuation. The working mechanism of a CSV is based on a barrier of capillary pressure induced by an abruptly expanding microchannel. We discuss the influence of wetting conditions on the performance of a CSV and the effect of elevated temperatures on a CSV in its closed state. We introduce design features such as pillars and cavities, as well as fabrication techniques for rounded microchannels, which all may broaden the applicability and robustness of CSVs in microfluidic devices. Finally, we present CSV having multiple inlet channels. CSVs further diversify the toolbox of microfluidic functionalities and yet are simple to implement, fabricate and actuate.

Tinderbox 5.12.1 - Store and organize your notes, ideas, and plans.. (Demo)

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 08:59 PM PST

Tinderbox is a personal content management assistant. It stores your notes, ideas, and plans. It can help you organize and understand them. And Tinderbox helps you share ideas through Web journals and Web logs.

Tinderbox's agents automatically scan your notes, looking for patterns and building relationships. Agents help discover relationships and help make sure important things don't get lost. Agents are easy to make and easy to modify. They're flexible and powerful.

Tinderbox can even gather and update changing information and breaking news from the internet.

When it's time to share your notes, Tinderbox can assemble multiple notes into one page. Updates are a breeze -- even if you update several times a day. Private notes, timestamps, permanent links, archives: everything you want, just the way you want it.

Version 5.12.1: Release notes were unavailable when this listing was updated.

Capo 2.1.9 - Slow down and learn to play your favorite songs.. (Demo)

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 08:59 PM PST

Capo is a musician's best friend. It lets you slow down your favorite songs, so you can hear the notes and learn how they are played. And, you can tab out your songs in record time atop a highly-detailed OpenCL-powered spectrogram display!

It's your music
No longer do you have to rely on the musical tastes of others to learn music. Drag songs right from your music collection into capo to start learning them.

Tab it out!
By simply drawing atop the spectrogram, Capo will generate tablature automatically for you. It really doesn't get much easier than this!

Detect, and enter chords
Figure out the chords in your music using Capo's sophisticated chord detection routines. Or, enter your own easily using strings like 'bbmaj7' or 'f#maj9'.

Pitch adjustment
Capo lets you adjust the pitch of your songs-so you can change their key or fine tune them to match your instrument.

Markers
Use keyboard shortcuts to mark verses, choruses, bridges, and other important points in your songs so you can return to them later.

Looping
Repeat difficult sections slowly, playing along with your favorite artist. Speed up gradually as you get better.

Music Export
Take your Capo-adjusted music with you. Export speed- and pitch-corrected audio to your iPod, and play along when and where it's most convenient.

Effects
Capo lets you modify panning, adjust a 10-band graphic equalizer, and apply vocal reduction to help you isolate the parts of the music you wish to learn.

Version 2.1.9:

Bug Fixes:
  • Fixes a graphics performance regression introduced in Capo 2.1.8
  • After all note entries are deleted, Capo no longer plays those entries back
  • Note entries can no longer be dragged outside the spectrogram range
  • The playhead no longer plays scrubbing sounds on first click
  • Capo will no longer crash on launch if the MIDI subsystem fails to initialize

CrossOver 12.1 - Run Windows apps on your Intel Mac.. (Demo)

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 08:59 PM PST

CrossOver allows you to install many popular Windows applications on your Mac. Your applications integrate seamlessly in OS X; just click and run. No rebooting, no switching to a virtual machine, and no Windows Operating System license required.

CrossOver is capable of running a wide range of Windows software. To see if your favorite application works with CrossOver, please check What Runs, or search for it using the search box at the top of this page.

Thousands of Titles!

CrossOver can run many different Windows applications. Use this database to find out if your favorite software works under CrossOver.

Easy Installs!

Many Windows titles can be installed using our CrossTie technology. If you have CrossOver installed, and have the installer for your Windows software, simply click the button in our Compatibility Database, and CrossOver will automatically install your application for you!

Compatibility Center Statistics

  • 9,952 applications in database.
  • 1,338 gold medal applications in database.
  • 1,154 1-click install via CrossTie applications in database.
  • 487,841 total CrossTie downloads to date.
  • Wizard101 is the top downloaded CrossTie with 91,593 downloads.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic is the top voted application with 319 votes.

Version 12.1:
  • We have fixed a bug where certain users who chose "Register for all users of this computer" during CrossOver's registration would receive an error claiming their bottle had "expired" and could not be used, despite the user having a valid CrossOver license.
  • We have added a preference setting allowing the user to control what CrossOver does with an unknown Windows .exe file when it is launched. Using this preference, the user can tell CrossOver either to treat the unknown .exe file as an application installer, or to simply run it.
  • CrossOver will now auto-update CrossTie files if the user has permitted auto-updates of CrossOver itself via Sparkle.
  • Fixed a bug where automatic updates via Sparkle would fail for some users on Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
  • Fixed a bug which caused several games to fail when running in fullscreen mode. Games which should be improved include StarCraft, Fallout, and, we hope, many others.
  • Fixed a bug which prevented some users from logging into World of Tanks servers.
  • CrossOver no longer ships Wine-Mono, an open-source replacement for .Net, by default. We had started doing this for CrossOver 12 but the large increase in download size and disk space usage proved too much. CrossOver can still download and install Wine-Mono as-needed.
  • We have fixed a bug which caused CrossOver to print unnecessary error messages when launching Windows applications, complaining that certain icon files could not be found.
  • New translations for Polish & Chinese (China), and a partial translation for Italian.
Application Support:
  • Fixed connection errors with Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 when connecting to hosted Exchange servers.
  • Fixed a bug which caused adding a table of contents to a Microsoft Word document to fail.
  • Fixed an issue where Quicken failed to download WebConnect and QFX files.
  • Fixed an issue where Quicken crashed viewing investment details.
  • Fixed an issue where Quicken crashed when expanding columns in reports.
  • Fixed a bug which caused clicking on a promotional offer in Quicken to crash.
  • Fixed some connection failures with Quicken 2011.
  • Fixed an issue where rotated text was garbled in PowerPoint 2010.
  • Fixed a bug selecting shapes in Visio 2010.
  • Fixed a crash on launch in HCFA-1500.
