In particular, if managed appropriately, the 25.1 million ha of Japanese forests could be an important source of wood biomass for bioenergy production. Here, we discuss policy incentives for substituting wood bioenergy for nuclear power, thereby creating a safer society while better managing the forest resources in Japan. |
| Posted: 06 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT The objective of the study was to compare the antioxidant activity of two distinct hydrolysates and their peptide fractions prepared by ultrafiltration (UF) using membranes with molecular weight cut-off of 5 and 1 kDa. The hydrolysates were a delipidated egg yolk protein concentrate (EYP) intensively hydrolyzed with a combination of two bacterial proteases, and a phosphoproteins (PPP) extract partially hydrolyzed with trypsin. Antioxidant activity, as determined by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay, was low for EYP and PPP hydrolysates with values of 613.1 and 489.2 µM TE×g−1 protein, respectively. UF-fractionation of EYP hydrolysate increased slightly the antioxidant activity in permeate fractions (720.5–867.8 µM TE×g−1 protein). However, ORAC values were increased by more than 3-fold in UF-fractions prepared from PPP hydrolysate, which were enriched in peptides with molecular weight lower than 5 kDa. These UF-fractions were characterized by their lower N/P atomic ratio and higher phosphorus content compared to the same UF-fractions obtained from EYP-TH. They also contained high amounts of His, Met, Leu, and Phe, which are recognized as antioxidant amino acids, but also high content in Lys and Arg which both represent target amino acids of trypsin used for the hydrolysis of PPP. |
| Square Enix announces Final Fantasy rhythm game Posted: 05 Jul 2011 11:50 PM PDT 3DS title to require screen tap prompts in sync with Final Fantasy tunes.
Apart from being a big RPG franchise, the Final Fantasy series has been known for its music, compositions and live orchestra tribute performances like the Dear Friends and Distant Worlds concerts. In that context, it seems fitting that Square Enix recently announced that a rhythm game based on the Final Fantasy series' music is in the works for the Nintendo 3DS, according to a recent issue of Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump (translated by Siliconera). The game will be called Theatrhythm Final Fantasy and is labeled as a "theater rhythm action" title. Players will have to tap the 3DS touchscreen in accordance to the beat of a selected song while the top screen displays field scenes and side-view battle scenes set in Final Fantasy locales. The game's art style will be colorful and reminiscent of the style used in Square Enix's mobile Kingdom Hearts titles. A release date for the title has yet to be announced. | Australia to become top game development territory in five years: Reed Posted: 05 Jul 2011 09:01 PM PDT CEO of the Game Developers Association of Australia says the Australian Government's tax credit will encourage growth and development in the local industry. The Australian Government's proposed research and development tax credit is the most convenient support package the Australian games industry has seen from the national government, says CEO of the Game Developers Association of Australia, Tony Reed. The new A$1.8 billion ($1.89 billion) research and development tax credit legislation, currently waiting to pass through Australian Federal Parliament, will deliver a 45 percent refundable tax credit to businesses with a turnover of less than A$20 million, a bracket that many Australian game development studios fall into. Reed says this will help the local industry become one of the top three game development territories in the world, something the GDAA hopes will be achieved in the next five years. "No matter how big or small a studio is, this is the kind of thing that will encourage development. It is designed with our own independence, creativity, and innovation in mind. Our goal at the GDAA is to prepare Australia to become one of the top three territories in the world for game development within the next five years. I think this can be achieved--the industry is doing really great right now and we seem to have gone back to our roots in generating amazing content." Aussie studios must register with the government to apply for the tax credit and show proof of research and development. "From a contract point of view this is really attractive because it really does help offset the really high Aussie dollar," Reed says. | Posted: 06 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT Polyphenols and flavonoids possess a variety of biological activities including antioxidant and anti-tumor activities. Ixora parviflora is a member of the flavonoid-rich Rubiaceae family of flowering plants and used as folk medicine in India. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity of Ixora parviflora extract (IPE) in a cell-free system and erythrocytes, and the ability of IPE to inhibit reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in human fibroblasts (Hs68) after ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Various in vitro antioxidant assays were employed in this study. The extraction yield of IPE was 17.4 ± 3.9%, the total phenolic content of IPE was 26.2 μg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/mg leaves dry weight and the total flavonoids content was 54.2 ± 4.4 μg quercetin equvalent (QE)/mg extract. The content of chlorogenic acid was 9.7 ± 1.2 mg/g extract. IPE at 1000 μg/mL exhibited a reducing capacity of 90.5 ± 0.6%, a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazy (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of 96.0 ± 0.4%, a ferrous chelating activity of 72.2 ± 3.5%, a hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of 96.8 ± 1.4%, and a hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity of 99.5 ± 3.3%. IPE at 500 μg/mL also possessed inhibitory activity against 2,2'-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced hemolysis of erythrocytes (89.4 ± 1.8%) and resulted in a 52.9% reduction in ROS generation in UV-exposed fibroblasts. According to our findings, IPE is a potent antioxidant and a potential anti-photoaging agent. |
| Posted: 06 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT The genus Glycyrrhiza consists of about 30 species, amoung these, G. glabra is the source of several phenolic compounds, known as flavonoids, such as licoagrodin, licoagrochalcones, licoagroaurone and licochalcone C, kanzonol Y, glyinflanin B and glycyrdione A, which have shown various pharmacological activities, including antitumor, antiparasitic, antileishmanial, anti-ulcer and antioxidative effects. Among these compounds, licochalcone C was isolated but its biology has not been fully examined. In our study we reproduced an inflammatory state by treating THP-1 (human myelomonocytic leukaemia) cells with pro-inflammatory stimuli, such as LPS and IFN-γ and we investigated the possible antioxidant activity of licochalcone C at a concentration of 50 μM. Our results show that treatment with licochalcone C attenuates the LPS-IFN-γ-induced inflammatory response by significantly decreasing the expression and activity of iNOS via NFκB (nuclear factor kappa-B), by influencing extracellular O2− production, and by modulating the antioxidant network activity of SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase) and GPx (glutathione peroxidase) activity. Based on these results we hypothesize that Licochalcone C has antioxidant properties since it reduces the production of superoxide radicals and consequently reduces the activity of iNOS. |
