BookMacster 1.6.4 - Organize and manage bookmarks and sync across browsers.. (Shareware)

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 03:37 AM PDT

BookMacster keeps bookmarks in sync among Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Camino, iCab, Opera and OmniWeb, and on the web with Delicious, Pinboard, and Google Bookmarks. Used with a cloud syncing service, it takes cross-browser bookmark syncing on the road to any Mac. BookMacster keeps bookmarks alphabetized (sorted), verified, and checked for duplicates. BookMacster supports tags, comments, and shortcuts. BookMacster users can add bookmarks directly from within browsers, and access all bookmarks while in any app from the menu bar and, under OS X Lion, access to past bookmarks via Lion's Auto Save and Versions features.

BookMacster is the Bookmarks Master for the Mac. (For new users with Mac OS 10.5 or later, please choose BookMacster instead its progenitor, Bookdog.)

WHAT'S YOUR USAGE STYLE?

One reason we call BookMacster The Bookmarks Master for the Mac is because, depending on how you count, it's actually several apps in one. To give you a quick start, we've identified three typical Usage Styles:

  1. You use only one web browser, such as Safari or Firefox or Chrome, but you wish to add capabilities such as sorting (alphabetizing), finding duplicates and verifying bookmarks to its built-in bookmarks storage.
  2. You use multiple web browsers (Safari and Firefox, etc.) and wish to keep their built-in bookmarks synchronized with each other.
  3. You want a more full-featured, cross-browser and portable replacement for the built-in bookmarks storage in your web browser(s), updated for today's browsers.

Although picking a Usage Style helps you to get started, you can switch at any time, or mix things up to make your own Usage Style. And, regardless of style, activating BookMacster's cloud-syncing will sync these same bookmarks to all of your Macs, automatically.

Version 1.6.4:
  • Fixed bugs which caused three dialogs indicating that a User Cancelled Error 3072 to be displayed, and in some cases fail to open the document, when opening a Bookmarkshelf Document which is more than several weeks old in OS X Lion.
  • Bugs were fixed so that clicking in the menu File ▸ Duplicate when operating in OS X Lion works properly now.
  • An (annoying) new feature of OS X Lion, which displays a warning when opening a document which was last opened more than several weeks ago, has been bypassed for Bookmarkshelf documents.  Old documents now just open (although, as before, they take longer to open the first time if an intervening BookMacster update requires that their data model be updated).
  • Fixed a bug which caused empty folders resulting from merging folders to not be deleted when importing from multiple Clients, if these Clients had folder structures which were similar but not identical in certain pathological respects.
  • Fixed bug which caused exceptions to be written to system console log when scrolling through the Sync Logs of a Bookmarkshelf document when operating in OS X Lion.
  • Fixed a bug which caused the Sort Now, by contextual menu item introduced in version 1.6.2 to not work for all of the non-string (dates and number) attribute types in its submenu.
  • Fixed a bug which sometimes caused a crash when closing a Bookmarkshelf document window in our test lab with AppleScript.  Theoretically, similar crashes could have been occurring in real life.

  • Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later.
  • To sync with Firefox, requires Firefox 3.6 or later.

myLionWindowAnimation 1.0 - Disable window animation in Mac OS X 10.7.. (Free)

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 03:44 AM PDT

myLionWindowAnimation is a utility with a single purpose: in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Apple introduced a new 'opening animation' for windows. This is very nice to look at the first time. And the second time. And the third time. But after some weeks it is getting boring and in addition it slows down the interaction with OS X – or much more important – one thinks it does.

With this little tool you can simply disable (and of course re-enable at any time again) this window animation. And that is all it does.

(Yes, I know you could do the same with Terminal - but there are so many people out there afraid to use it...or don't even know what the heck it is).

Version 1.0: Initial release.

  • Mac OS X 10.7 or later
  • 64-bit Intel CPU

UK Storm Trooper armourer can go on selling his gear; Brit copyright on Star Wars costumes has lapsed

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 03:39 AM PDT

Andrew Ainsworth is a Londoner who designed the original Storm Trooper helmets for George Lucas's Star Wars. Ainsworth has been casting new armour from his original moulds for the past eight years, selling them to fans at up to £1,800 a throw. Lucas sued Ainsworth in a US court, which held that he had violated Lucas's copyright; but because Ainsworth has no US assets, Lucas had to bring suit in the UK to collect. However, UK law affords only limited copyright to costumes, and the UK Supreme Court held that costumes are not sculptures, and only get a 15 year term of copyright in the UK, meaning that Storm Trooper armour is now in the public domain in Britain. The court also found that Ainsworth had violated US copyright.

Mr Ainsworth sells his Stormtrooper costumes for up to £1,800

A prop designer who made the original Stormtrooper helmets for Star Wars has won his battle with director George Lucas over his right to sell replicas.

Andrew Ainsworth, 62, of south London, successfully argued the costumes were functional not artistic works, and so not subject to full copyright laws.

Molecules, Vol. 16, Pages 6378-6395: Antioxidant Capacities and Total Phenolic Contents Increase with Gamma Irradiation in Two Types of Malaysian Honey

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Two types of monofloral Malaysian honey (Gelam and Nenas) were analyzed to determine their antioxidant activities and total phenolic and flavonoid contents, with and without gamma irradiation. Our results showed that both types of honey can scavenge free radicals and exhibit high antioxidant-reducing power; however, Gelam honey exhibited higher antioxidant activity (p < 0.05) than Nenas honey, which is in good correlation (r = 0.9899) with its phenolic contents. Interestingly, we also noted that both irradiated honeys have higher antioxidant activities and total phenolic and flavonoid contents compared to nonirradiated honeys by Folin-Ciocalteu and UV-spectrophotometry methods, respectively. However, HPLC analysis for phenolic compounds showed insignificant increase between irradiated and nonirradiated honeys. The phenolic compounds such as: caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, p- coumaric acid, quercetin and hesperetin as indicated by HPLC method were found to be higher in Gelam honey versus Nenas honey. In conclusion, irradiation of honey causes enhanced antioxidant activities and flavonoid compounds.

Molecules, Vol. 16, Pages 6365-6377: Effects of Lipoic Acid, Caffeic Acid and a Synthesized Lipoyl-Caffeic Conjugate on Human Hepatoma Cell Lines

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is among the most aggressive and fatal cancers. Its treatment with conventional chemotherapeutic agents is inefficient, due to several side effects linked to impaired organ function typical of liver diseases. Consequently, there exists a decisive requirement to explore possible alternative chemopreventive and therapeutic strategies. The use of dietary antioxidants and micronutrients has been proposed for HCC successful management. The aim of this work was to test in vitro the effects of lipoic acid, caffeic acid and a new synthesized lipoyl-caffeic conjugate on human hepatoma cell lines in order to assess their effect on tumor cell growth. The results of cytotoxicity assays at different times showed that the cell viability was directly proportional to the molecule concentrations and incubation times. Moreover, to evaluate the pro- or anti-inflammatory effects of these molecules, the cytokine concentrations were evaluated in treated and untreated cellular supernatants. The obtained cytokine pattern showed that, at the increasing of three molecules concentrations, three pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α decreased whereas the anti-inflammatory cytokine such as IL-10 increased.

Molecules, Vol. 16, Pages 6349-6364: Novel Library of Selenocompounds as Kinase Modulators

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Although the causes of cancer lie in mutations or epigenic changes at the genetic level, their molecular manifestation is the dysfunction of biochemical pathways at the protein level. The 518 protein kinases encoded by the human genome play a central role in various diseases, a fact that has encouraged extensive investigations on their biological function and three dimensional structures. Selenium (Se) is an important nutritional trace element involved in different physiological functions with antioxidative, antitumoral and chemopreventive properties. The mechanisms of action for selenocompounds as anticancer agents are not fully understood, but kinase modulation seems to be a possible pathway. Various organosulfur compounds have shown antitumoral and kinase inhibition effects but, in many cases, the replacement of sulfur by selenium improves the antitumoral effect of compounds. Although Se atom possesses a larger atomic volume and nucleophilic character than sulfur, Se can also formed interactions with aminoacids of the catalytic centers of proteins. So, we propose a novel chemical library that includes organoselenium compounds as kinase modulators. In this study thirteen selenocompounds have been evaluated at a concentration of 3 or 10 µM in a 24 kinase panel using a Caliper LabChip 3000 Drug Discover Platform. Several receptor (EGFR, IGFR1, FGFR1…) and non-receptor (Abl) kinases have been selected, as well as serine/threonine/lipid kinases (AurA, Akt, CDKs, MAPKs…) implicated in main cancer pathways: cell cycle regulation, signal transduction, angiogenesis regulation among them. The obtained results showed that two compounds presented inhibition values higher than 50% in at least four kinases and seven derivatives selectively inhibited one or two kinases. Furthermore, three compounds selectively activated IGF-1R kinase with values ranging from −98% to −211%. In conclusion, we propose that the replacement of sulfur by selenium seems to be a potential and useful strategy in the search of novel chemical compound libraries against cancer as kinase modulators.
