Whitecross Street Party: street art in East London

Dan Hillier writes, "The Whitecross Street Party: Rise of the non-conformists is a two-day street party and four week exhibition featuring some of the world's most creative pranksters and musical mischief makers. For two days on the 23rd and 24th July the Street will become a celebration of the arts involving some of the most exciting local and international creatives who will transform the city landscape into a giant outdoor art gallery."

Hoo-yah! This is right around the corner from my flat, and what's more, it's ALSO around the corner from my favorite London coffee spot, the tiny Giddy-Up coffee stall in Fortune Park. Great coffee and street art? Count me the hell in!

Comic-Con 2011: Day 2 Wrap-up

Day two of the San Diego Comic Convention has come to a close. Many cosplayers were seen. Many panels were watched. Some emergency show floor hot dogs may or may not have been eaten, but one thing is for certain, the GameSpot editorial staff saw a lot of great stuff today. Shatner, Brooks, Bakula convene Captains summit

Comic-Con 2011: Kevin Smith hosts Star Trek legends panel to discuss upcoming documentary The Captains.

 

Who was there: Former star ship captains William Shatner, Avery Brooks, and Scott Bakula, with director/professional nerd Kevin Smith moderating.

What they talked about: Comedian Kevin Smith took the stage to a packed house at this year's San Diego Comic-Con convention. After Smith's opening salvo a brief trailer for William Shatner's The Captians was shown. This upcoming documentary complies a series of interviews the actor conducted with other star ship captains throughout Star Trek's many incarnations. Once it concluded, Avery Brooks and Shatner took the stage to thunderous applause.

After exchanging pleasantries the conversion turned to Brooks' role in the documentary, both as a subject and musician. Shatner noted how impressed he was with Brooks' skill as an improvisational jazz musician, which Brooks demonstrated during their musical interview in the documentary. He was so impressed that he later invited Brooks to pen the film's score. Brooks' added that this was a "wonderful challenge" since Shatner wanted him to create a score that would compliment the conversations, and not just be background noise. "One of the most important things to learn in music is to listen," Brooks added.

At this point, Bakula slid onto stage invoking a sudden rush of cheers from the audience. "I am here to represent the other captains who were not asked to score the movie," he said. After bantering with Smith and the other panelists, Bakula discussed how he and Shatner had never truly met until the documentary and how impressed he was at all the similar experiences the two of them had shared as captains. He then thanked Shatner for all his hard work in the original series, adding that "without him we wouldn't be here today."

Of the few Q&A questions asked the one that elicited the best response was: What do you think each Star Trek series has given to the world. Brooks took the lead and, after considering his words for a moment, stated that it is the viewers who hold all the power; they give the show its meaning and without them none of this would exist. Shatner echoed this sentiment while also taking the opportunity to promote another documentary he's working on about the Star Trek fandom. Bakula had a much simpler answer: "Hope."

"Anything you write in science fiction may be right, because we know nothing."--Shatner on our place in the universe.

Takeaway: Judging by Shatner's teaser of The Captains, Star Trek fans aren't likely to gain any deeper insight into quasars or warp drives. Still, for those who have become enamored in the cult of personality that is The Shatner, laughs should be had.

Resident Evil 4, Code: Veronica X HD lurch to US in September

Comic-Con 2011: Capcom announces high-definition horror remakes will arrive on Sept. 20, Sept. 27, respectively.

 

SAN DIEGO--Japanese gamers will have a crack at the high-definition updates of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code: Veronica X as part of the expansive 15th Anniversary bundle on September 8. As part of Comic-Con 2011 today, Capcom said US gamers will have to wait a bit longer.

Premiering first will be Resident Evil 4 HD, which will drop on September 20. A week later, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X will hit shelves on September 27.

Capcom made the news today during its Resident Evil panel at Comic-Con, where the publisher also said both games will be available at retail and, as was previously announced, digitally. Xbox 360 gamers can pick up each title via Games on Demand and PlayStation 3 owners can grab both games on the PlayStation Network.
