Games, Vol. 2, Pages 257-276: A Choice Prediction Competition for Social Preferences in Simple Extensive Form Games: An Introduction

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Two independent, but related, choice prediction competitions are organized that focus on behavior in simple two-person extensive form games (http://sites.google.com/site/extformpredcomp/): one focuses on predicting the choices of the first mover and the other on predicting the choices of the second mover. The competitions are based on an estimation experiment and a competition experiment. The two experiments use the same methods and subject pool, and examine games randomly selected from the same distribution. The current introductory paper presents the results of the estimation experiment, and clarifies the descriptive value of some baseline models. The best baseline model assumes that each choice is made based on one of several rules. The rules include: rational choice, level-1 reasoning, an attempt to maximize joint payoff, and an attempt to increase fairness. The probability of using the different rules is assumed to be stable over games. The estimated parameters imply that the most popular rule is rational choice; it is used in about half the cases. To participate in the competitions, researchers are asked to email the organizers models (implemented in computer programs) that read the incentive structure as input, and derive the predicted behavior as an output. The submission deadline is 1 December 2011, the results of the competition experiment will not be revealed until that date. The submitted models will be ranked based on their prediction error. The winners of the competitions will be invited to write a paper that describes their model.

Cancers, Vol. 3, Pages 3018-3028: Detouring the Undesired Route of Helicobacter pylori-Induced Gastric Carcinogenesis

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Epidemiological and experimental evidence has emerged that a dysregulated inflammation is associated with most of the tumors, and many studies have begun to unravel the molecular pathways linking inflammation and cancer. As a typical example linking these associations, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection-associated atrophic gastritis has been recognized as precursor lesion of gastric cancer. The identification of transcription factors such as NF-κB and STAT3, and their gene products such as IL-8, COX-2, iNOS, cytokines, chemokines and their receptors, etc have laid the molecular foundation for our understanding of the decisive role of inflammation in carcinogenesis. In addition to the role as the initiator of cancer, inflammation contributes to survival and proliferation of malignant cells, tumor angiogenesis, and even metastasis. In this review, the fundamental mechanisms of H. pylori-induced carcinogenesis as well as the possibility of cancer prevention through suppressing H. pylori-induced inflammation are introduced. We infer that targeting inflammatory pathways have a potential role to detour the unpleasant journey to H. pylori-associated gastric carcinogenesis.

Religions, Vol. 2, Pages 297-311: The Park 51/Ground Zero Controversy and Sacred Sites as Contested Space

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

The Park 51 controversy swept like wildfire through the media in late August of 2010, fueled by Islamophobes who oppose all advance of Islam in America. Yet the controversy also resonated with many who were clearly not caught up in the fear of Islam. This article attempts to understand the broader concern that the Park 51 project would somehow violate the Ground Zero site, and, thus, as a sign of "respect" should be moved to a different location, an argument that was invariably articulated in "spatial language" as groups debated the physical and spatial presence of the buildings in question, their relative proximity, and even the shadows they cast. This article focuses on three sets of spatial meanings that undergirded these arguments: the site as sacred ground created through trauma, rebuilding as retaliation for the attack, and the assertion of American civil religion. The article locates these meanings within a broader civic discussion of liberty and concludes that the spatialization of the controversy opened up discursive space for repressive, anti-democratic views to sway even those who believe in religious liberty, thus evidencing a deep ambivalence regarding the legitimate civic membership of Muslim Americans.

Polymers, Vol. 3, Pages 1162-1180: Polymer-Optical-Fiber Lasers and Amplifiers Doped with Organic Dyes

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Polymer optical fibers (POFs) doped with organic dyes can be used to make efficient lasers and amplifiers due to the high gains achievable in short distances. This paper analyzes the peculiarities of light amplification in POFs through some experimental data and a computational model capable of carrying out both power and spectral analyses. We investigate the emission spectral shifts and widths and on the optimum signal wavelength and pump power as functions of the fiber length, the fiber numerical aperture and the radial distribution of the dopant. Analyses for both step-index and graded-index POFs have been done.

Polymers, Vol. 3, Pages 1151-1161: Tunable Crystal-to-Crystal Phase Transition in a Cadmium Halide Chain Polymer

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

The chain polymer [{Cd(μ -X)2py2}1∞ (X = Cl, Br; py = pyridine) undergoes a fully reversible phase transition between a monoclinic low-temperature and an orthorhombic high-temperature phase. The transformation can be directly monitored in single crystals and can be confirmed for the bulk by powder diffraction. The transition temperature can be adjusted by tuning the composition of the mixed-halide phase: Transition temperatures between 175 K up to the decomposition of the material at ca. 350 K are accessible. Elemental analysis, ion chromatography and site occupancy refinements from single-crystal X-ray diffraction agree with respect to the stoichiometric composition of the samples.

Comic-Con 2011: Mortal Kombat Legacy comes to a close.

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 06:00 PM PDT

Mortal Kombat Legacy, the popular web series that started life as an unofficial teaser and ignited the MK community, comes to a close tonight.

Despite the fact that the game shipped in April of this year, the Mortal Kombat universe still had plenty of new things in store for its fans at the San Diego Comic-Con—namely Mortal Kombat Legacy, the web series that, much like the critically acclaimed game, brought the franchise to a new generation of fans.

The series, directed by Kevin Tancharoen, began life as an atmospheric —teaser— trailer that was a labor of love cobbled together guerilla style by Tancharoen and powered by favors and a shoestring budget. The resulting clip ignited the Internet with speculation of a new movie and massive amounts of buzz that eventually enabled Tancharoen to get funding for Mortal Kombat Legacy. The project became an innovative nine episode web series that continued the style featured in the teaser, which took a gritty real-life approach towards the MK lore.

Over the course of the eight episodes, Tancharoen and the celebrity cast including Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, Darren Shahlavi, Matt Mullins, Sam Tihia, Joolene Tran, Ryan Robins, Ian Anthony Dale, and Kevin Ohtsii, brought the franchise—s iconic characters to life in surprising ways. The ninth and final episode brings the series to an explosive close as the origin of two of the franchise—s iconic characters, Cyrax and Sektor, comes to light.

The final episode of the Mortal Kombat Legacy will can be seen below.
