Humanities, Vol. 1, Pages 62-63: Humanity and Sustainability

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 12:00 AM PDT

So far our open access publishing company MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) has published mainly science, medicine and technology journals. To become a multidisciplinary publisher, we launched the journal Sustainability [1]. More recently, we started to run several social science journals, including Societies [2], Religions [3], Administrative Sciences [4] and Behavioral Sciences [5]. Today we published the first paper [6] of the inaugural issue of Humanities (ISSN 2076-0787). This will be an international open access journal, publishing scholarly papers of high quality across all humanities disciplines. As a publisher, I would like to publish journals surrounding the topics of sustainability and I believe the humanities as a discipline of academic studies are very important. As a scientist, I believed science and technology will only benefit human beings. I was raised in a small village, living a very primitive life in a peasant family: no electricity, no machines, of course no TV and no refrigerator. Now, the life of my children is completely different. Even my own life has completely changed. I have witnessed very rapid changes: more and more machines are used to consume mineral resources and energy and to pollute the environment, in order to produce more and more powerful machines (we are also launching a journal titled Machines, in which the relationship between Man and machine should be an interesting topic.). Machines are more and more like human individuals consuming resources themselves (we are launching a journal titled Resources). [...]

Humanities, Vol. 1, Pages 54-61: Humanities — To Be or Not To Be, That Is the Question

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Let us carry some proverbial owls to Athens or coals to Newcastle, that is, revisit issues that have been discussed and examined by so many different voices in the past and the present. However, those issues by themselves are so powerful and important, so urgent and difficult that we must never tire of examining them always anew because they pertain centrally to our own human existence and prove to be the defining factors for our survival as a species. Why do we need the humanities as an academic discipline in the university, or in our educational system at large? What role do the humanities play both inside and outside the academy? Most universities in this world somehow acknowledge the importance of languages, literatures, music, art history, philosophy, religion, and education. But when it comes to basic financial issues, the humanities tend to be the first victims of budget cuts, if we disregard specifically liberal arts colleges that focus on the humanities above all or exclusively. Information, Vol. 2, Pages 546-559: Interdisciplinary Research between Theoretical Informatics and the Humanities

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 12:00 AM PDT

This paper focuses on the interdisciplinary research between Theoretical Informatics (TI) and the Humanities (philosophy, history, literature, etc.). There are five main sections: 1. A brief introduction to TI and its functions in the aspects of worldview and methodology, 2. An illustration of the problems associated with dualism as set out by Plato and René Descartes by means of a theoretical model of the mutual contact and interaction between the material world and the information world, 3. An explanation of the historical view of R. G. Collingwood through informationalism, 4. A discussion of the basic concepts for Humanistic Informatics which is under construction, and 5. A proposal of some approach to the new subject in information science.

Sensors, Vol. 11, Pages 8933-8952: A Novel Design of an Automatic Lighting Control System for a Wireless Sensor Network with Increased Sensor Lifetime and Reduced Sensor Numbers

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are currently being applied to energy conservation applications such as light control. We propose a design for such a system called a Lighting Automatic Control System (LACS). The LACS system contains a centralized or distributed architecture determined by application requirements and space usage. The system optimizes the calculations and communications for lighting intensity, incorporates user illumination requirements according to their activities and performs adjustments based on external lighting effects in external sensor and external sensor-less architectures. Methods are proposed for reducing the number of sensors required and increasing the lifetime of those used, for considerably reduced energy consumption. Additionally we suggest methods for improving uniformity of illuminance distribution on a workplane's surface, which improves user satisfaction. Finally simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of our design.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 3, Pages 2051-2056: Issues in Establishing Climate Sensitivity in Recent Studies

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Numerous attempts have been made to constrain climate sensitivity with observations [1-10] (with [6] as LC09, [8] as SB11). While all of these attempts contain various caveats and sources of uncertainty, some efforts have been shown to contain major errors and are demonstrably incorrect. For example, multiple studies [11-13] separately addressed weaknesses in LC09 [6]. The work of Trenberth et al. [13], for instance, demonstrated a basic lack of robustness in the LC09 method that fundamentally undermined their results. Minor changes in that study's subjective assumptions yielded major changes in its main conclusions. Moreover, Trenberth et al. [13] criticized the interpretation of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as an analogue for exploring the forced response of the climate system. In addition, as many cloud variations on monthly time scales result from internal atmospheric variability, such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation, cloud variability is not a deterministic response to surface temperatures. Nevertheless, many of the problems in LC09 [6] have been perpetuated, and Dessler [10] has pointed out similar issues with two more recent such attempts [7,8]. Here we briefly summarize more generally some of the pitfalls and issues involved in developing observational constraints on climate feedbacks. [...]

Nutrients, Vol. 3, Pages 818-838: Antioxidant and Antiradical Activities of Manihot esculenta Crantz (Euphorbiaceae) Leaves and Other Selected Tropical Green Vegetables Investigated on Lipoperoxidation and Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) Activated Monocytes

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Abelmoschus esculentus (Malvaceae), Hibiscus acetosella (Malvaceae), Manihot esculenta Crantz (Euphorbiaceae) and Pteridium aquilinum (Dennstaedtiaceae) leaves are currently consumed as vegetables by migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in Western Europe and by the people in the origin countries, where these plants are also used in the folk medicine. Manihot leaves are also eaten in Latin America and some Asian countries. This work investigated the capacity of aqueous extracts prepared from those vegetables to inhibit the peroxidation of a linoleic acid emulsion. Short chain, volatile C-compounds as markers of advanced lipid peroxidation were measured by gas chromatography by following the ethylene production. The generation of lipid hydroperoxides, was monitored by spectroscopy using N-N′-dimethyl-p-phenylene-diamine (DMPD). The formation of intermediate peroxyl, and other free radicals, at the initiation of the lipid peroxidation was investigated by electron spin resonance, using α-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone as spin trap agent. The ability of the extracts to decrease the cellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in "inflammation like" conditions was studied by fluorescence technique using 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescine-diacetate as fluorogenic probe, in a cell model of human monocytes (HL-60 cells) activated with phorbol ester. Overall the extracts displayed efficient concentration-dependent inhibitory effects. Their total polyphenol and flavonoid content was determined by classic colorimetric methods. An HPLC-UV/DAD analysis has clearly identified the presence of some polyphenolic compounds, which explains at least partially the inhibitions observed in our models. The role of these plants in the folk medicine by sub-Saharan peoples as well as in the prevention of oxidative stress and ROS related diseases requires further consideration.

TGS 2011: Battlefield 3 single-player hands-on preview

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 02:29 AM PDT

We storm into Tehran with our hands-on of a new level from EA's upcoming Battlefield 3.

Japanese games may logically dominate the Tokyo Games Show, but Western publishers still take the opportunity to showcase their biggest titles for Asia's largest games event. EA has certainly taken this opportunity, showing off a new level from Battlefield 3's upcoming single-player campaign at TGS.

While EA reps didn't disclose at what stage of the game the special level shown at TGS takes place, we do know its set in the Iranian city of Tehran. The level—which takes place at night—begins with your character Sergeant Blackburn hunkering down with the rest of Misfit Squad on top of a hill on the edge of the city. As you crouch, you hear your orders come through: meet up with Haymaker squad in the city, and take out a nest of enemies in an apartment block along the way.

The action begins with a desperate run down the hill, with you and Misfit squad hightailing it down the slope as explosives land around you, throwing chunks of ground into the air and taking out the occasional soldier. As we reached the bottom of the hill, we set up a mortar, and then set off an illumination round into the sky to let our brothers in Haymaker squad that we were on our way.

A quick boost over a nearby wall saw us enter our first firefight for the level, so we equipped a SCAR-L rifle equipped with an ACOG scope as our weapon of choice. This area looked like a hilly park, with several machinegun nests dotting the surrounds. We carefully made our way up the hill, picking off enemies from behind cover and trying to flank MG nests wherever possible. At the top of the hill, we reached a choke point where some stairs led up into the apartment building we needed to storm. This section was a little tougher, with enemies streaming down the stores being provided cover by shooters perched up on the higher level.

After we managed to make our way through, we found ourselves in a small courtyard. One of our buddies threw a grenade into the ground floor window of the apartment block, taking out the encamped soldiers within. That was our queue to make our way inside to clear it of enemies, and we switched to an 870 MCS shotgun for close-quarters killing. After clearing the ground floor, we headed towards a waiting transport, which is where the game play session ended.

Even though it was only a brief taste of what Battlefield 3's single-player campaign, it was certainly an adrenalin-pumping one, particularly the mad dash down the hill at the start of the level. The shooting was tight and fluid, and we're keen to play more to find out just how this level fits into the game's overall narrative.

Ninokuni to be released in North America "early 2012"

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 02:13 AM PDT

PS3 version of DS RPG to be localized in English next year; DLC also in the works.

While Japan will be getting the PS3 version of the Level-5 and Studio Ghibli RPG collaboration known as Ninokuni on November 17, no one knew whether an English version would be made. RPG fans and Studio Ghibli enthusiasts can now rejoice as Ninokuni: Shiroki Seihai no Joou (subtitled "Queen of the White Ashes") for the PS3 will be out in North America in early 2012.

During the Sony Computer Entertainment Asia press conference on September 16 held near Tokyo Game Show 2011's venue, Level-5 president Akihiro Hino mentioned during an interview panel that an English version of the game is in production right now as well as announced the above release window of the title. This PS3 version of the game starts off the same as the DS version, but the story is told differently after the game's midpoint. According to Hino, the PS3 will have additional story content that will pick off where the DS version ended.

The game will also be launched in Asian markets in Japanese. Level-5 hasn't made plans for a Chinese text version, but Hino said that if there is a huge demand for it, his company will consider it. The game will also feature downloadable content post-release, but Hino can't make an official announcement about it until a later date.

In the game, players control Oliver, a 13-year old boy who is transported into the world called Ninokuni which is a parallel reality of his own world. He is on a quest to revive his recently-deceased mother and is accompanied first by a male fairy called Shizuku. The game is an RPG, in which combat is settled in turn-based format.

EA Visceral Melbourne heading for trouble?

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 01:10 AM PDT

Twitter reports have surfaced indicating EA Visceral Melbourne studio may soon be shutting down; IGDA Melbourne has confirmed the reports.

In August this year, THQ confirmed the closure of both its Australian development studios--Blue Tongue studio and Brisbane's THQ Studios Australia--due to a global restructure of its internal framework.

It now appears EA may be going down the same route with the Australian arm of its Visceral Games studio. According to the Melbourne chapter of the International Game Developers Association, IGDA Melbourne, EA Visceral Melbourne staff will meet with human resources personnel this coming Monday, September 19, to discuss the studio's closure.

IGDA Melbourne also revealed this information via Twitter today.

EA Visceral Melbourne is responsible for working on and producing Dead Space, Godfather 2, and Dante's Inferno. According to EA's website, the studio was working on an unannounced AAA title based on new intellectual property.

EA replied to GameSpot AU request for comment but stated that it does not comment on rumour. GameSpot will continue to update the story as news comes in.

TGS 2011: Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance Preview

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 12:22 AM PDT

It's Kingdom Hearts 3—.D!

Playing a Japanese role-playing game in a language you are unfamiliar with is a challenge, but for Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, we were at least able to get a feel for the combat by fighting a variety of heartless in the streets of Traverse Town. The Tokyo Game Show demo let us choose to play as the moody Riku or the perpetually upbeat Sora. In our gameplay demo below, you can see Riku in action but we also spent some time as Sora. The first thing we noticed was that combat was fast and flashy, much quicker than what we've seen in previous Kingdom Hearts games. Sora was able to zip through the air, propelling himself from one lamp post to another. While in the air, he can also do an area attack where he plummets to the ground and knocks back anyone that gets too close.

You'll notice in the gameplay demos below that Riku is accompanied by two bizarre-looking creatures. Sora was also followed by a couple of cute animals (one was a giant panda and we weren't sure what the other thing was) and while we're not sure who they were and where they came from, they proved to be helpful. What also helped speed things up is that Sora can glide on rails, which makes moving from one end of town to the other much faster. But have a look for yourself at the upcoming Kingdom Hearts for the Nintendo 3DS.

Come check out our TGS demo of the upcoming Final Fantasy-themed rhythm game.

While many of you are probably wondering why we haven't given you more information on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, we're sad to say that the game is not at the show. However, if you've gotten your fill of Final Fantasy XIII-2, there's another FF game that might hold your attention. Sure, it's a rhythm game with super cute Final Fantasy characters but if you love the series for its music, then you'll want to keep an eye on this game.

GameSpot editor Jonathan Toyad wrote a detailed preview on the game earlier, focusing on the mechanics which you can read here. The Tokyo Game Show demo gave us a handful of Final Fantasy game music to choose from with different modes so check them out below! We also checked out Final Fantasy X's Suteki Da Ne, which was like a music video with the beautiful cut scenes from the game playing in the background while we tapped, flicked and dragged the stylus.
