DesktopShelves 1.4 - Display any folder as a shelf on your desktop.. (Demo)

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 03:19 AM PDT

DesktopShelves can help clean up a desktop cluttered by dozens of different files.

You can display any folder as a shelf on your Desktop. On a shelf the size of 5 normal Desktop items you can fit 20 files, because items on a shelf are slightly rotated like books on a real-world shelf. That saves a lot of screen real estate.

If you mouse-over your shelves, you can see a larger preview of the file. A double-click opens it.

You can use DesktopShelves in many different ways: to organize files by project, quickly access frequently used files, or to collect text snippets and templates. Other features include:

  • Finder integration: open folders as shelves from the Finder context menu
  • Shelf contents update automatically when the underlying folder changes (e.g. you add or remove a file in Finder)
  • Shelf width can be adjusted and shelves can be placed anywhere on the Desktop
  • Drag & drop support: drag files from the Finder on the shelves, drop files from a shelf directly into other applications like Mail.app or TextEdit (dragging with right mouse button inserts the file contents)

Version 1.4:
  • Sort shelf items by name, date created, date modified, or file type
  • Added option to adjust the size of shelves
  • Added option to adjust the space between shelf items
  • Drag and drop files between shelves (as long as shelf folders are on same volume)
  • Placeholder for folder preview image now is an actual folder image
  • Custom shelf designs now have more flexibility placing the shelf items and shelf label
  • Shelf is now removed automatically when shelf folder is deleted from the command line
  • Preview icons are now half-transparent
  • Performance improvement when loading shelf items from disk
  • Performance improvement when refreshing shelf contents
  • Don't allow dragging shelf by deselected item
  • A number of improvements to the item animations
  • Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard only: Added menu entry to activate Finder integration for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (where it requites a log out/log in)
  • Addressed issue that could lead to the application not responding

Microarrays, Vol. 1, Pages 3-24: Microbial Diagnostic Microarrays for the Detection and Typing of Food- and Water-Borne (Bacterial) Pathogens

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Reliable and sensitive pathogen detection in clinical and environmental (including food and water) samples is of greatest importance for public health. Standard microbiological methods have several limitations and improved alternatives are needed. Most important requirements for reliable analysis include: (i) specificity; (ii) sensitivity; (iii) multiplexing potential; (iv) robustness; (v) speed; (vi) automation potential; and (vii) low cost. Microarray technology can, through its very nature, fulfill many of these requirements directly and the remaining challenges have been tackled. In this review, we attempt to compare performance characteristics of the microbial diagnostic microarrays developed for the detection and typing of food and water pathogens, and discuss limitations, points still to be addressed and issues specific for the analysis of food, water and environmental samples.

IJMS, Vol. 12, Pages 6796-6809: Nuclear Markers of Danube Sturgeons Hybridization

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Acipenseriformes are composed of 25 sturgeon species and two paddlefish species distributed exclusively in the northern hemisphere. The Danube River and the Black Sea were originally inhabited by six sturgeon species but two are extinct and only four are still reproducing currently in the Lower Danube: Huso huso, Acipenser stellatus, A. gueldenstaedtii and A. ruthenus. Sturgeon species hybridize more easily than other fish and the determination of pure species or hybrid status is important for conservation and for breeding in fish farms. This survey demonstrated that morphological determination of this status is not reliable and a molecular tool, based on eight microsatellites genotypes is proposed. This method, based on three successive statistical analyses including Factorial Correspondence Analysis (FCA), Structure assignation and NewHybrids status determination, showed a high efficiency in discriminating pure species specimens from F1, F2 and two kinds of backcross individuals involving three of the four reproducing Lower Danube sturgeon species.

IJMS, Vol. 12, Pages 6781-6795: The Stimulation of IGF-1R Expression by Lewis(y) Antigen Provides a Powerful Development Mechanism of Epithelial Ovarian Carcinoma

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Objective: This study aimed to measure and correlate the expression of insulin-like growth factor receptor-1 (IGF-1R) and the Lewis(y) antigen in ovarian cancer cell lines and tissue samples. Methods: Reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR), Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence double-labeling techniques were applied to detect and measure the expression of Lewis(y) and IGF-1R. Results: In α1,2-fucosyltransferase (α1,2-FT)-transfected cells, IGF-1R expression was significantly upregulated compared with cells that do not overexpress α1,2-FT (P < 0.05). The amount of Lewis(y) expressed on IGF-1R increased 1.81-fold in α1,2-FT-overexpressing cells (P < 0.05), but the ratio of Lewis(y) expressed on IGF-1R to total IGF-1R was unaltered between two cells (P > 0.05). In malignant epithelial ovarian tumors, the positivity rates of Lewis(y) and IGF-1R detection were 88.3% and 93.33%, respectively, which is higher than the positivity rates in marginal (60.00% and 63.33%, all P < 0.05), benign (33.00% and 53.33%, all P < 0.01), and normal (0% and 40%, all P 0.05). Both IGF-1R and Lewis(y) were highly expressed in ovarian cancer tissues, and their expression levels were positively correlated (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Overexpression of Lewis(y) results in overexpression of IGF-1R. Both IGF-1R and Lewis(y) are associated with the occurrence and development of ovarian cancers.

Marine Drugs, Vol. 9, Pages 1914-1954: The Structural Diversity of Carbohydrate Antigens of Selected Gram-Negative Marine Bacteria

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Marine microorganisms have evolved for millions of years to survive in the environments characterized by one or more extreme physical or chemical parameters, e.g., high pressure, low temperature or high salinity. Marine bacteria have the ability to produce a range of biologically active molecules, such as antibiotics, toxins and antitoxins, antitumor and antimicrobial agents, and as a result, they have been a topic of research interest for many years. Among these biologically active molecules, the carbohydrate antigens, lipopolysaccharides (LPSs, O-antigens) found in cell walls of Gram-negative marine bacteria, show great potential as candidates in the development of drugs to prevent septic shock due to their low virulence. The structural diversity of LPSs is thought to be a reflection of the ability for these bacteria to adapt to an array of habitats, protecting the cell from being compromised by exposure to harsh environmental stress factors. Over the last few years, the variety of structures of core oligosaccharides and O-specific polysaccharides from LPSs of marine microrganisms has been discovered. In this review, we discuss the most recently encountered structures that have been identified from bacteria belonging to the genera Aeromonas, Alteromonas, Idiomarina, Microbulbifer, Pseudoalteromonas, Plesiomonas and Shewanella of the Gammaproteobacteria phylum; Sulfitobacter and Loktanella of the Alphaproteobactera phylum and to the genera Arenibacter, Cellulophaga, Chryseobacterium, Flavobacterium, Flexibacter of the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides phylum. Particular attention is paid to the particular chemical features of the LPSs, such as the monosaccharide type, non-sugar substituents and phosphate groups, together with some of the typifying traits of LPSs obtained from marine bacteria. A possible correlation is then made between such features and the environmental adaptations undertaken by marine bacteria.

Molbank, Vol. 2011, Pages M740: N-(4-Methylsulfonamido-3-phenoxyphenyl)-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12-dicarboximide

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

The title compound, N-(4-methylsulfonamido-3-phenoxyphenyl)-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12-dicarboximide was synthesized in high yield by reaction of N-(4-amino-2-phenoxyphenyl)methanesulfonamide and 9,10-dihydroanthracene-9,10-endo-α,β-succinic anhydride in glacial acetic acid. The structure of the compound was fully characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR, mass spectral analysis and elemental analysis.

Molecules, Vol. 16, Pages 8670-8683: Synthesis, Metal Ion Complexation and Computational Studies of Thio Oxocrown Ethers

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

The synthesis of some thio-oxocrown ether ligands, B1 (1,4-dithio-12-crown-4), B2 (1,7-dithio-12-crown-4), B3 (1,7-dithio-15-Crown-5), B4 (1,7-dithio-18-crown-6), B5 (1,10-dithio-18-crown-6), B6 (1,10-dithio-21-crown-7), under mild conditions, were reported. The ligands were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and GC-MS spectroscopy. The formation of 1:1 ligand complexes with a variety of metal salts (Ag+, Ca+2, K+, Na+, Mg+2, Zn+2 and Fe+2) were investigated by a conductometric method in a 1:1 dioxane–water system at 25 °C, and the complexation constants (Ke = (ΛMAm -Λ) / ((Λ-ΛMaΛbAm) [L]) and free energy (∆Go= - RT lnKe) values are calculated. Details of the specific molecular interactions between the ligands and metals were proposed. We also performed DFT calculations to explain their geometrical properties, charges and frontier molecular orbitals.
