Novel tetra-functional hydrolyzing monomers were prepared from the reaction of TEOS and select alkene-containing alcohols, ethylene glycol vinyl ether or 2-allyloxy ethanol, and combined with trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (tri-thiol) in a thiol-ene "click" polymerization reaction to produce clear, colorless thiol-ene networks using both radiation and thermal-cure techniques. These networks were characterized for various mechanical characteristics, and found to posses Tg's (DSC), hardness, tack, and thermal stability (TGA) consistent with their molecular structures. A new ene-modified urethane oligomer was prepared based on the aliphatic polyisocyanate Desmodur® N 3600 and added to the thiol-ene hydrolyzable network series in increasing amounts, creating a phase-segregated material having two Tg's. An increase in water absorption in the ene-modified urethane formulations leading to a simultaneous increase in the rate of hydrolysis was supported by TGA data, film hardness measurements, and an NMR study of closely related networks. This phenomenon was attributed to the additional hydrogen bonding elements and polar functionality brought to the film with the addition of the urethane segment. SEM was utilized for visual analysis of topographical changes in the film's surface upon hydrolysis and provides support for surface-driven erosion. Coatings prepared in this study are intended for use as hydrolyzing networks for marine coatings to protect against ship fouling.

HOWTO take over your neighbor's stereo

Simple suggestion here, I had the same issue with a neighbor that no matter how nicely or how well I explained the situation he refused to stop playing death metal at 4 am. Frequent calls to the police only ratcheted up the harassment.

In deference to XKCD the real way to cause problems with her system is pretty simple. You need a Cheap CB radio, A linear amp, and a bottom loaded CB antenna (easier to build a ground plane for it ) . See if you can get a good guess where she has her shit set up and get your antenna close as you can to it, You should be able to talk to her THROUGH her stereo system. The amplifier sections are not shielded in these plastic ready made toys and the resulting AM signal will impact it. In my case I ran a continuous 6khz tone from a signal generator which was more than enough to blow it up good. ENJOY!

I came pretty close to desperate enough to try this last year, when the squatters in the derelict building next door to us got evicted and replaced by much, much less considerate squatters, including one young fellow who'd decide he was Fatboy Slim at around 3AM most mornings and start blaring dubstep directly into the shared wall that backed on our bedroom (and our infant daughter's bedroom, for good measure). That's when I learned that Hackney's "noise abatement" process is: a) call noise complaint line, leave message; b) wait 1-2h for callback; c) request a visit; d) wait 1-2 hours for the noise abatement team to show up; e) if the noise is still ongoing, they can then issue a warning to the noisy person. After multiple warnings, they can seize the offending equipment. Needless to say, we never managed to get them to the house in time to catch Mr Slim-Lite in the act, let alone issue one of their stern warnings.

Polymers, Vol. 3, Pages 1833-1848: Gold-Poly(methyl methacrylate) Nanocomposite Films for Plasmonic Biosensing Applications

Gold-poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites are prepared by an in situ method, by irradiating spin-coated films containing the polymer and the gold precursor dissolved in acetone. The reduction of gold ions results in the formation of Au that nucleates and grows within the polymer film. It is shown that, depending on the energy source, gold nanoparticles with different shapes can be formed. Nanocomposites prepared through UV-, thermal-, and MW-irradiation, respectively, show a low sensitivity toward the environment. However, by annealing the samples at temperatures well above the glass transition temperature of the polymer, the response to dielectric environment appears to be enhanced significantly. The sensitivity of samples synthesized through the three different methods is found to be comparable, around 100 nm/RIU. The increased sensitivity of the annealed sample is accounted for by the increased mobility of both polymer chains and gold nanoparticles in the rubbery state of the material and the presence of the monomer. Gold nanoparticles "freed" from the strong interaction with the polymer are now able to feel the molecules from the surrounding environment. The results show that, by using adequate post-synthesis heat treatments, gold-polymer nanocomposites can be used as plasmonic sensing platforms.

Code of Princess slashing onto 3DS in Japan

Beat-'em-up due for spring release; graphic design by former Capcom veteran.

Agatsuma Entertainment has announced that it will be developing an action game called Code of Princess based on the PVC figure line of the same name. In this title, which is tailored as a side-scrolling beat-'em-up, players have to restore balance to the world by taking control of warrior princess Solange Blanchefleur de Luxe who wields a giant sword and a revealing outfit. Other playable characters include the nimble thief Ali Vava, zombie spellcaster Lady Zozo, and guitar-wielding elf Allegro Nantabile Cantabile.

In addition to a simple combat mechanic and the ability to jump in and out of backgrounds (ala Guardian Heroes), the game will also support cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes with up to three other 3DS users.

Kinu Nishimura, a former Capcom artist renowned for the artwork for the Street Fighter and Capcom vs. SNK series, will be handling graphic design and artwork for the game. Nishimura is also the creator of the Code of Princess figure line.

The beat-'em-up will be out in spring 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan. An English version of the title has yet to be announced. Similarly, the Black Rock Shooter PVC figure line also spawned a PSP action RPG title. Check out the preview of the game here.
