Epithelial carcinomas of the ovary exhibit the highest mortality rate among gynecologic malignancies. Studies found that the metabolism of glycolipids or carbohydrates is associated with acquirement of anticancer drug-resistance by cancer cells. This study was to characterize possible involvement of Lewis Y (LeY) antigen in the drug-resistance of cancer cells. We transfected the α1,2-fucosyltransferase gene into human ovarian carcinoma-derived RMG-1 cells and established RMG-1-hFUT cells with enhanced expression of LeY. We determined the effects of docetaxel on the survival of cells by MTT assaying and observed the apoptosis of cells in the presence of docetaxel by flow cytometric analysis and by transmission electron microscopy. Plasma membranes and intracellular granules in RMG-1-hFUT cells were stained with anti-LeY antibody, the intensity of the staining was higher than that in control cells. The RMG-1-hFUT cells exhibited higher resistance to docetaxel than the control cells with regard to the docetaxel concentration and time course. After treatment with 10 μg/mL docetaxel for 72 h, the control cells, but not RMG-1-hFUT, contained abundant positively stained cell debris due to disintegration of the cytoskeleton. On transmission electron microscopy, although the control cells treated with docetaxel as above showed the following morphology, i.e., absence of villi, cells shrunken in size, pyknosis, agglutinated chromatin and cell buds containing nuclei in the process of apoptosis, the RMG-1-hFUT cells showed only agglutinated chromatin and vacuoles in the cytoplasm. In summary, cells with enhanced expression of LeY were shown to acquire docetaxel-resistance, indicating the possible involvement of glycoconjugates in the drug-resistance.

A series of biphenyl-2,2'-diylbis(diarylmethanol)s 3, which have two kinds of aryl groups at the bay region, were efficiently obtained by integrated flow microreactor synthesis. The diols 3NO/NX are the precursors of unsymmetric biphenylic dications 2NO/NX2+, which are transformed into the corresponding dihydrophenanthrenes 1NO/NX via 2NO/NX+• upon reduction, when they exhibit two-stage color changes. On the other hand, the steady-state concentration of the intermediate 2NO/NX+• is negligible during the oxidation of 1NO/NX to 2NO/NX2+, which reflects unique tricolor electrochromicity with a hysteretic pattern of color change [color 1→color 2→color 3→color 1].

This research analyzes the relationships between off-highway vehicle (OHV) riders' patterns of prior experience and the social-psychological benefits they desire from the activity; it also examines the relationships between patterns of prior experience and environmental attitudes. The sample consists of 600 OHV riders in Utah drawn from the entire population of OHV owners within the state. The sample was segmented into experience use history groups based upon respondents' number of OHV trips within the past 12 months and the total number of years they have been riding OHVs. Results show that patterns of prior experience are related to certain desired social-psychological benefits. Personal achievement benefits were significantly more important for more frequent riders when compared to those who rode less often. The analysis also reveals no relationship between patterns of prior experience and general environmental attitudes.

Social game The Smurf's Village "served as the driving force in increasing Capcom's financial results" in a quarter that saw profits halve.

Capcom's profits for the quarter ending September 30 were down 49 percent year-on-year, while its income was down 28.1 percent, the Japanese firm announced today. This decline is even steeper than in the previous quarter, which saw year-on-year declines of 23 percent for profit and 37.2 percent for income. This decline was due to economic factors such as the strengthening yen, the Eurozone crisis and concerns over power shortages, as well as "structural change" in the games industry, and a relative lack of new releases from the firm compared to the same period in 2010.

The Smurfs' Village on Facebook was credited for driving revenue growth.

According to Capcom, both Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. performed "solidly", while Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Sengoku Basara: Chronicle Heroes "basically" achieved projected sales. Meanwhile the latest addition to the Monster Hunter Freedom MMO, Forward 1, "fully leveraged characteristics to enjoy success." Sales for the Consumer Online Games division were down 41.1 percent year-on-year to ¥18.1 billion ($238 million), while profits fell 50.3 percent to ¥2.25 billion ($29.6 million). Despite the declines, both revenue and profits exceeded Capcom's internal projections.

Mobile and social games provided a bright spot for the publisher, however, with revenue climbing 89 per cent to ¥2.58 billion ($33.9 million), and operating income increasing 201 per cent to ¥903 million ($11.9 million). The Smurf's Village, which Capcom launched jointly with Facebook, "served as the driving force in increasing Capcom's financial results," the firm said. It also "contributed greatly to improving Capcom's earning capacity" helping its total download figures for social games to pass the 20 million mark.

Capcom's arcade business also did well, with profits up 67.1 percent year-on-year to ¥1.2 billion. This was thanks to renovations, promotional activity, and a general revitalisation of the arcade business "owing to the waning of excessive self-restraint evident immediately after the earthquake," the firm said.
