Religions, Vol. 3, Pages 407-423: Towards a Global History of Voting: Sovereignty, the Diffusion of Ideas, and the Enchanted Individual

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

This article suggests a framework for moving toward a global history of voting and democracy that focuses less on the diffusion of European ideas (however important those ideas were) than on embedding the history of voting within a worldwide history of ideas on sovereignty. The article posits a general framework for such a history focusing on a "conundrum of sovereignty" grounding legitimate rule in a space imagined as simultaneously within and outside worldly society. Rooted in a "secular theology" such ideas shaped in the 19th and 20th centuries the establishment of systems of mass voting (including the secret ballot), and the sovereignty of the "people" both in Europe and other parts of the world alike, in the process producing an image of the individual voter as an "enchanted individual." The article looks at developments within Europe and in India in these terms.1

Two new cembrane diterpenes, sicrassarines A and B (compounds 1 and 2), were isolated from the Taiwanese soft coral Sinularia crassa. The structures of the new metabolites were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, particularly mass spectroscopy and 2D NMR (1H–1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC, and NOESY) spectroscopy.

Molecules, Vol. 17, Pages 5412-5421: Evaluation of Antioxidant and Immunity Function of Tetramethylpyrazine Phosphate Tablets in Vivo

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of tetramethylpyrazine phosphate tablets (TPT), a Chinese medicine used for cardiovascular disease, on immunity activity and oxidative injury in rats. Heart failure (HF) was induced by isoproterenol (ISO). After the animal model was established, the rats were administered the TPT by gavage (once a day). The results indicated that TPT improved left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP), ±dP/dt, heart weight/body weight. TPT could decrease the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Furthermore, it also could raise the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), but reduce malonyldialdehyde (MDA) level. The results indicated that TPT improved cardiac function and myocardial fibrosis from myocardial injury, and this cardioprotection might be attributed to a reduction of oxidative stress and regulation of inflammation mediators.

Crackdown on Japanese mobile social games

Posted: 07 May 2012 10:08 PM PDT

Business model to be questioned by Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency; social network platform portals DeNA and Gree stock plummets over 20 percent.

Japanese social game publishers may soon see a crackdown from the Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency (JCAA), due to a sales method that may be violating certain sale laws.

According to the Daily Yomiuri, the business model under scrutiny is the "compu gacha" model. Translated as the "complete gacha" model, this sales method has players paying a set amount of real money to gain a random in-game item of different value (similar to gambling). The "complete gacha" model requires players to buy a complete set of items to get even more prestigious items as a bonus.

According to a source of the Daily Yomiuri, investigations on the "compu gacha" method began after the JCAA received numerous complaints about expensive fees being imposed on users by social network platforms like GREE and DeNA's Mobage.

There were 58 complaints filed during fiscal year 2011; the agency plans to ask the social games publisher's council, Social Game Platform Renraku Kyogikai, to stop offering games with the "compu gacha" model. As a result of the report, notable social game publishers Gree and DeNA saw their stocks drop by 20 percent. According to Bloomberg, the investigation on the sales method is currently in progress.

Exploring nothingness in The Unfinished Swan

Posted: 07 May 2012 09:32 PM PDT

Sony trades sandy for sterile in its latest downloadable game, The Unfinished Swan.

Highlight the page below to explore our first look at Sony's latest downloadable art game.

Close your eyes and look around. Go on, we'll wait. Now open them. Dark, wasn't it? No matter which direction you looked, everything was uniformly blank. Game developers often use plain environments when designing level layouts and spaces. But what would happen if instead of adding detail, you stood in a world lacking texture or depth? A single, flat colour appears to stretch endlessly in every direction, but could be no more than a few feet in front of your face. There's no way to discern distance, so perhaps you're teetering on the edge of a huge fall, or standing at the base of a looming tower. Welcome to the world of The Unfinished Swan, Sony's latest foray into arthouse games, and a former, student project the publisher hopes to turn into its next big downloadable hit.

But what is this place, and how did we end up here? Forgive us if we go a little light on the details, but, because The Unfinished Swan, like Journey before it, is a game designed around player exploration, we don't want to spoil any of the surprises. You play Monroe, a child left alone after his mother passes away. Her lifelong passion was art, and, while she loved to paint, she didn't ever finish any of her works, amassing some 300 paintings left in various states of completion. Monroe is given the choice of taking just one of the works with him when he's sent to an orphanage, and he chooses the namesake Unfinished Swan.

We were dropped into a sterile white space. Creative director Ian Dallas explained that many of the studio's play testers stood around, waiting for something to happen or wondering if this was still a loading screen. There were no crosshairs to aim, no visible character attributes to gauge our proportions, and no clear objective. A chime sounded, and, like Pavlov's dog, we sprung into action; invited to interact with the place around us. The game is playable either with the standard first-person shooter dual analog sticks or using the PlayStation Move wand. Trigger presses fling out globs of viscous black paint--and it was only once our guide began to liberally dose it out that we saw the space take form around us.

Our first thought was of Michelangelo's David; a complete "something" lurking within an abstract "nothing", waiting to be revealed one splash at a time. But, while painting is a means to an end, it's not the primary aim. Paint acts as the conduit to drive exploration, rather than pushing you to cover every inch of it in an opposing shade. It's the stark tonal difference between the black and white that provides definition; were you to simply cover everything with as much paint as possible, you'd end up where you began, just in a different colour.

Walls rose up as we splattered and sprayed the paint; the revealed width and height of the place drew our path, propelling us forward along the corridor. We discovered a bench, tall, swaying trees, a frog, and a pond. Not everything in this mysterious world was friendly, however, and we watched as the frog hopped into the water--only to be consumed by a breaching sea monster. It's an odd sensation, paralysed by not knowing if the step ahead leads to a gruesome end or the next obstacle to be faced. But something compels you to push on.

This is a bleak and sanitary world, so the orange footprints of the swan we chased or a simple yellow shape hovering in the air would let us know we were on the right track. It's as close as we got to a compass or checkpoint, and, by painting, we discovered huge sculptures, created by the creator of the world we were investigating.

This is the king's place; a dreamscape manifestation of his own frame of mind, and one that we were told will adapt to reflect his own evolution as a character over the course of the game. Some of his favourite things were there: a unicorn, a hippo, and a giant piece of bacon--which was a tad macabre when it was so closely placed near a bust of a happy-looking pig. Perhaps it was an ominous warning of what was to come?

Pathways twisted and turned, vast, palatial walls and staircases rose out of the nothing in front of our eyes, and long, sweeping walking tracks gave way to narrow scaffolding catwalks. We stopped periodically to admire our own handiwork from a position of elevation, as a trail of painted mess stretched out behind and below us. This isn't your typical downloadable title, but it does share some common game features with its contemporaries. There are items to collect, such as hidden balloons and narrated storybook pages that fill you in on what's happening around you. Some were left in plain sight (as plain as white objects in a white world can be), while others were hidden behind false walls, which could be knocked over with precision-placed paint.

Levels are quite short, and our demo ended as we tracked down our living, moving swan. As we stepped towards it, we dropped into a pit, with the scene fading to black--but this was only the start of the adventure. With so much of this game hinging upon discovery, the development team is wary of leading players, sharing too much, or setting up any expectations. Ian Dallas explained that it will be the same sort of length as Journey, and that the team is committed to keeping the experience impactful through its brevity. The sorts of experiences gamers want and what they're willing to pay are moving targets, but we're interested by The Unfinished Swan's concept and eager to see how this exploratory escapade plays out. Look for it later this year, exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

Sol Trigger blasting this August in Japan

Posted: 07 May 2012 08:49 PM PDT

The PSP RPG comes from the developer of the Luminous Arc series and Arc Rise Fantasia; the preorder bonus includes drama and soundtrack CD.

While plenty of gamers have moved on to the PS Vita for their Sony-branded portable fix, they should not count the PSP out just yet, particularly if they're from Japan. Developer Imageepoch, known for the Luminous Arc series on the DS and Arc Rise Fantasia for the Wii, recently announced in the latest issue of Famitsu (via Andriasang) that the upcoming PSP RPG Sol Trigger will be out on August 30 in Japan.

Gamers who preorder the title will get both a free dramatic story CD featuring the game's voice cast, a limited soundtrack CD, and an artbook. The preorder bundle will also contain codes that can be used to unlock special items in the game.

Sol Trigger is claimed to be the most expensive project Imageepoch has ever done. The combat system for the RPG will be turn based, and will implement the Sol system. Players can use a party member's Sol power to activate special moves and skills; the more they use it, the stronger the skills become.

Each party member can learn new skills by using new types of weapons. More so, if a party member's hit points reach zero, players are given the option to recover that party member, provided he or she has some Sol power left.

Catalysts, Vol. 2, Pages 281-298: Hot and Dry Cleaning of Biomass-Gasified Gas Using Activated Carbons with Simultaneous Removal of Tar, Particles, and Sulfur Compounds

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

This study proposes a gas-cleaning process for the simultaneous removal of sulfur compounds, tar, and particles from biomass-gasified gas using Fe-supported activated carbon and a water-gas shift reaction. On a laboratory scale, the simultaneous removal of H2S and COS was performed under a mixture of gases (H2/CO/CO2/CH4/C2H4/N2/H2S/COS/steam). The reactions such as COS + H2 → H2S + CO and COS + H2O → H2S + CO2 and the water-gas shift reaction were promoted on the Fe-supported activated carbon. The adsorption capacity with steam was higher than that without steam. On a bench scale, the removal of impurities from a gas derived from biomass gasification was investigated using two activated filters packed with Fe-supported activated carbon. H2S and COS, three- and four-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and particles were removed and a water-gas shift reaction was promoted through the first filter at 320–350 °C. The concentrations of H2S and COS decreased to less than 0.1 ppmv. Particles and the one- and two-ring PAHs, except for benzene, were then removed through the second filter at 60–170 °C. The concentration of tar and particles decreased from 2428 to 102 mg Nm−3 and from 2244 to 181 mg Nm−3, respectively.

Crystals, Vol. 2, Pages 374-392: Mott-Anderson Transition in Molecular Conductors: Influence of Randomness on Strongly Correlated Electrons in the κ-(BEDT-TTF)2X System

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The Mott-Anderson transition has been known as a metal-insulator (MI) transition due to both strong electron-electron interaction and randomness of the electrons. For example, the MI transition in doped semiconductors and transition metal oxides has been investigated up to now as a typical example of the Mott-Anderson transition for changing electron correlations by carrier number control in concurrence with inevitable randomness. On the other hand, molecular conductors have been known as typical strongly correlated electron systems with bandwidth controlled Mott transition. In this paper, we demonstrate our recent studies on the randomness effect of the strongly correlated electrons of the BEDT-TTF molecule based organic conductors. X-ray irradiation on the crystals introduces molecular defects in the insulating anion layer, which cause random potential modulation of the correlated electrons in the conductive BEDT-TTF layer. In combination with hydrostatic pressure, we are able to control the parameters for randomness and correlations for electrons approaching the Mott-Anderson transition.

IJMS, Vol. 13, Pages 5519-5527: Evaluation of HER2 Gene Amplification in Breast Cancer Using Nuclei Microarray in Situ Hybridization

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay is considered the "gold standard" in evaluating HER2/neu (HER2) gene status. However, FISH detection is costly and time consuming. Thus, we established nuclei microarray with extracted intact nuclei from paraffin embedded breast cancer tissues for FISH detection. The nuclei microarray FISH (NMFISH) technology serves as a useful platform for analyzing HER2 gene/chromosome 17 centromere ratio. We examined HER2 gene status in 152 cases of invasive ductal carcinomas of the breast that were resected surgically with FISH and NMFISH. HER2 gene amplification status was classified according to the guidelines of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and College of American Pathologists (ASCO/CAP). Comparison of the cut-off values for HER2/chromosome 17 centromere copy number ratio obtained by NMFISH and FISH showed that there was almost perfect agreement between the two methods (κ coefficient 0.920). The results of the two methods were almost consistent for the evaluation of HER2 gene counts. The present study proved that NMFISH is comparable with FISH for evaluating HER2 gene status. The use of nuclei microarray technology is highly efficient, time and reagent conserving and inexpensive.

Molecules, Vol. 17, Pages 5404-5411: Immunostimulatory Effect of Laminarin on RAW 264.7 Mouse Macrophages

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

This study investigated the immunostimulatory effects of laminarin with respect to inflammatory mediators such as hydrogen peroxide, calcium, nitric oxide, various cytokines, transcription factors, and immune response gene in RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages. Laminarin did not reduce the cell proliferation of RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages at concentrations up to 500 µg/mL. Laminarin significantly increased the release of hydrogen peroxide, calcium, nitric oxide, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, vascular endothelial growth factor, leukemia inhibitory factor, and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor with enhancing expression of Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 1 (STAT1), STAT3, c-Jun, c-Fos, and cyclooxygenase-2 mRNA in RAW 264.7 cells. The results suggest that laminarin has immunostimulatory properties, strengthening immune reactions via the transcription factor pathway in macrophages.
