Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 5814-5857: Vasodilator Compounds Derived from Plants and Their Mechanisms of Action

Posted: 17 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The present paper reviews vasodilator compounds isolated from plants that were reported in the past 22 years (1990 to 2012) and the different mechanisms of action involved in their vasodilator effects. The search for reports was conducted in a comprehensive manner, intending to encompass those metabolites with a vasodilator effect whose mechanism of action involved both vascular endothelium and arterial smooth muscle. The results obtained from our bibliographic search showed that over half of the isolated compounds have a mechanism of action involving the endothelium. Most of these bioactive metabolites cause vasodilation either by activating the nitric oxide/cGMP pathway or by blocking voltage-dependent calcium channels. Moreover, it was found that many compounds induced vasodilation by more than one mechanism. This review confirms that secondary metabolites, which include a significant group of compounds with extensive chemical diversity, are a valuable source of new pharmaceuticals useful for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 5804-5813: Dried Root of Rehmannia glutinosa Prevents Bone Loss in Ovariectomized Rats

Posted: 17 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Dried root of Rehmannia glutinosa is a kidney-tonifying herbal medicine with a long history of safe use in traditional folk medicine for the treatment of joint diseases. This study was conducted to investigate prevention of bone loss by a standardized dried root of R. glutinosa in an ovariectomized (OVX) rat model of osteoporosis. The OVX groups were divided into five groups treated with distilled water, 17β-estradiol (E2 10 µg/kg, once daily, i.p) and dried root of R. glutinosa extracts (DRGE 30, 100, and 300 mg/kg, twice daily, p.o) for eight weeks. We measured the body, organs, and uterus weights, and femur and lumbar vertebrae bone mineral density (BMD), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), estradiol levels. The treatments with DRGE 300 mg/kg significantly inhibited BMD decrease in the femur and lumbar (17.5% and 16.4%, p < 0.05, respectively) by OVX without affecting the body, organs, and uterus weights. Also, serum ALP level in the DRGE 300 mg/kg treated group was significantly decreased, but the estradiol level did not change in serum of the DRGE 300 mg/kg treated group. These results show that DRGE is able to prevent OVX-induced bone loss without influencing hormones such as estrogen.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 5792-5803: Effect of Leguminous Lectins on the Growth of Rhizobium tropici CIAT899

Posted: 17 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Rhizobium tropici is a Gram-negative bacterium that induces nodules and fixed atmospheric nitrogen in symbiotic association with Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) and some other leguminous species. Lectins are proteins that specifically bind to carbohydrates and, consequently, modulate different biological functions. In this study, the d-glucose/ d-mannose-binding lectins (from seeds of Dioclea megacarpa, D. rostrata and D. violacea) and D-galactose-binding lectins (from seeds of Bauhinia variegata, Erythina velutina and Vatairea macrocarpa) were purified using chromatographic techniques and evaluated for their effect on the growth of R. tropici CIAT899. All lectins were assayed with a satisfactory degree of purity according to SDS-PAGE analysis, and stimulated bacterial growth; in particular, the Dioclea rostrata lectin was the most active among all tested proteins. As confirmed in the present study, both d-galactose- and d-glucose/d-mannose-binding lectins purified from the seeds of leguminous plants may be powerful biotechnological tools to stimulate the growth of R. tropici CIAT99, thus improving symbiotic interaction between rhizobia and common bean and, hence, the production of this field crop.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 5779-5791: Effects of Polysaccharides from Different Species of Dendrobium (Shihu) on Macrophage Function

Posted: 17 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Dendrobium spp. are precious medicinal plants, used in China for thousands of years as health foods and nutrients. Polysaccharides are the main effective ingredients in Dendrobium plants. In this study, the chemical characteristics and the effects of crude polysaccharides (CPs) from five species of Dendrobium on macrophage function were investigated and compared in vitro for the first time. Chemical characteristic studies showed that CPs from different species of Dendrobium were diverse, displaying widely varied Mw distributions and molar ratios of monosaccharides. Their effects on macrophage functions, such as promoting phagocytosis, release of NO and cytokines IL-1α, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α, were also different. Moreover, CPs from D. officinale, especially collected from Yunnan Province, exerted the strongest immunomodulatory activities and could be explored as a novel potential functional food. The diverse chemical characteristics of CPs from different species of Dendrobium might contribute to their varied effects on macrophage functions, which should be further investigated.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 5, Pages 2492-2512: A Global Assessment of Long-Term Greening and Browning Trends in Pasture Lands Using the GIMMS LAI3g Dataset

Posted: 17 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Pasture ecosystems may be particularly vulnerable to land degradation due to the high risk of human disturbance (e.g., overgrazing, burning, etc.), especially when compared with natural ecosystems (non-pasture, non-cultivated) where direct human impacts are minimal. Using maximum annual leaf area index (LAImax) as a proxy for standing biomass and peak annual aboveground productivity, we analyze greening and browning trends in pasture areas from 1982–2008. Inter-annual variability in pasture productivity is strongly controlled by precipitation (positive correlation) and, to a lesser extent, temperature (negative correlation). Linear temporal trends are significant in 23% of pasture cells, with the vast majority of these areas showing positive LAImax trends. Spatially extensive productivity declines are only found in a few regions, most notably central Asia, southwest North America, and southeast Australia. Statistically removing the influence of precipitation reduces LAImax trends by only 13%, suggesting that precipitation trends are only a minor contributor to long-term greening and browning of pasture lands. No significant global relationship was found between LAImax and pasture intensity, although the magnitude of trends did vary between cells classified as natural versus pasture. In the tropics and Southern Hemisphere, the median rate of greening in pasture cells is significantly higher than for cells dominated by natural vegetation. In the Northern Hemisphere extra-tropics, conversely, greening of natural areas is 2–4 times the magnitude of greening in pasture areas. This analysis presents one of the first global assessments of greening and browning trends in global pasture lands, including a comparison with vegetation trends in regions dominated by natural ecosystems. Our results suggest that degradation of pasture lands is not a globally widespread phenomenon and, consistent with much of the terrestrial biosphere, there have been widespread increases in pasture productivity over the last 30 years.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 5, Pages 2475-2491: Geometric Accuracy Investigations of SEVIRI High Resolution Visible (HRV) Level 1.5 Imagery

Posted: 17 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

GCOS (Global Climate Observing System) is a long-term program for monitoring the climate, detecting the changes, and assessing their impacts. Remote sensing techniques are being increasingly used for climate-related measurements. Imagery of the SEVIRI instrument on board of the European geostationary satellites Meteosat-8 and Meteosat-9 are often used for the estimation of essential climate variables. In a joint project between the Swiss GCOS Office and ETH Zurich, geometric accuracy and temporal stability of 1-km resolution HRV channel imagery of SEVIRI have been evaluated over Switzerland. A set of tools and algorithms has been developed for the investigations. Statistical analysis and blunder detection have been integrated in the process for robust evaluation. The relative accuracy is evaluated by tracking large numbers of feature points in consecutive HRV images taken at 15-minute intervals. For the absolute accuracy evaluation, lakes in Switzerland and surroundings are used as reference. 20 lakes digitized from Landsat orthophotos are transformed into HRV images and matched via 2D translation terms at sub-pixel level. The algorithms are tested using HRV images taken on 24 days in 2008 (2 days per month). The results show that 2D shifts that are up to 8 pixels are present both in relative and absolute terms.

Vectoraster 5.2.0 - Creating vector-based raster patterns from bitmap images. (Shareware)

Posted: 17 May 2013 02:43 AM PDT

Vectoraster is a graphics utility for creating vector-based raster patterns and halftones based on bitmap images.

The raster patterns and point shapes can be freely configured to produce different styles. The resulting rasters can then either be exported as vectors to EPS or PDF files, as images to JPEG, PNG, or TIFF, or simply copied into most graphics software. With the batch processing tool you can also easily apply rasters to frames in a movie to use the effects in animation. Basic halftones demo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7gb19soxBo

You can download and try Vectoraster for free, but with some limitations. To remove these limitations and get the full version you have to pay for the application.

Features:

  • Many different point shape types, from circles to polygons or custom shapes from imported EPS-files.
  • Use characters as point shapes from any installed font, using a specified text to select the characters.
  • Outline mode, where points are outlined, and you have to option to vary the point outline with point weight.
  • Set raster point color or use color from the primary or secondary source image.
  • Vary different parameters such as size, point aspect or shape contraction with the point weight to get different effects.Patterns
  • Six configurable raster pattern types, including alternating grid, radial and varied density distribution.
  • Four raster distortion modes to twist, bulge, wave or split the raster pattern.
  • Easily rotate and offset the raster pattern.Output
  • Copy raster curves straight into most other vector graphics software.
  • Vector export to EPS and PDF.
  • Bitmap image export to JPEG, PNG and TIFF.
  • Batch processing to apply rasters directly to all images in a directory or to frames in a quicktime movie file.

Version 5.2.0:

Changes
  • Added a raster information panel showing information like raster size, DPI, and number of points, accessed by clicking the little info button in the bottom-right of the raster window.
  • Length unit consistency. All length values (like point size, point spacing, etc.) are now in millimeters, the option of using other length units when exporting has been removed.
  • Made the embedded message in exported rasters for unregistered users clearer.

WineBottler 1.4.1.4 - Bottle Windows apps as a Mac application bundle. (Free)

Posted: 17 May 2013 02:31 AM PDT

WineBottler allows users to bottle Windows applications as Mac apps.

Wine has always been popular among Linux users for running Windows programs, but Wine is available for Mac, too - and now, free utility WineBottler can "bottle" Windows programs into separate application bundles that run as standalone Mac apps.

In other words, WineBottler is a tool similar to codeweavers' Crossover, where separate prefixes are created per app. However, WineBottler 'wraps' or 'bottles' the separate prefixes in an application bundle. WineBottler allows standalone (i.e., not requiring wine to be installed) applications to be created as well, by including the wine bundle inside the standalone application bundle.

Bar Magnet 0.44 - Upload torrent files and magnet links to remote servers (beta). (Free)

Posted: 17 May 2013 02:24 AM PDT

Bar Magnet allows you to send torrent files and magnet links to remote or local torrent server front-ends just by opening them. This takes all of the hassle out of using a remote server for your torrenting.

Currently supported server front-ends:

Version 0.44:
  • Bug-fix: You are no longer notified about torrents that completed long ago.
  • Bug-fix: The parsing of magnet links for display in notifications has been fixed.
  • UI Improvement.
  • Many improvements are scheduled for version 0.5, including rTorrent support, and finer tuning for the current Web UIs.

  • OS X 10.8 or later
  • A torrenting application with remote access enabled. µTorrent, Transmission, the Vuze HTML UI plugin and the Vuze Web Remote are currently supported, but support is forthcoming for other server types.
  • If you have multiple torrent/magnet handling applications then I definitely recommend RCDefaultApp to be able to change the default easily.
