My stupidest moment as a customer, ever

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 02:43 AM PDT

Reading this Reddit thread on stupid customer stories reminded me of the stupidest thing I've ever done as a customer. I had flown all night and gotten into my hotel near San Francisco International very late. Blearily, I unpacked my toilet case and brushed my teeth, had a pee, flushed and climbed into bed. The toilet's plumbing made a moderate amount of noise as the cistern refilled, but just as it got to the point where the stopcock kicked it, it began to make a horrible, loud, nerve-jangling BRRRRRRRRRRRR noise.

I waited a couple of minutes for it to stop, but it wouldn't stop. I got out bed and looked under the toilet. I jiggled the handle. I flushed. BRRRRRRRRRRRR

I called the front desk. "Hi. There's something really wrong with my toilet. I flushed it and now it's going BRRRRRRRRRRRR. Can you find a maintenance person, please?"

It was about 1AM. There weren't a lot of maintenance people around. Ten minutes went by. BRRRRRRRRRRRR. Fifteen minutes. BRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I called the front desk again. "Hi, I don't mean to be impatient, but I've got a meeting early tomorrow morning and I really need to get some sleep. If you can't get a maintenance staffer in the next couple minutes, I think I'll need another room, OK?"

The maintenance guy came. I told him what had happened. We stood in the bathroom together, blearily, confronting the incredible, loud, nonstop BRRRRRRRRRRRR that seemed to come from all around us as the pipes shivered in the very walls. "I've never heard a toilet make that noise before," the maintenance guy said. "Me neither. I'll just wait in the room."

I went and sat on the bed, half-fuming, half-dozing. Suddenly, the BRRRRRRRRRRRR noise became much quieter: brrrrrrrrrrrr. Then, quieter still: brrrrrrrrrrrr.

The maintenance guy came out, holding my toothbrush. It was one of those battery-powered ones, but the battery had died three cities back, so it was just a toothbrush now. I had left it switched on, in the water glass by the sink, on the marble countertop -- a perfect sounding-board for the anxious little motor in that fucker, which had somehow sprung back to life after several days of being dead.

And that was the stupidest thing I've ever done as a customer. I practically prostrated myself in apology before the maintenance guy, called the front desk and told them "Never mind, I'm a huge idiot," and managed to get to sleep at last.

Crystals, Vol. 2, Pages 893-934: Vibrational Spectra of β″-Type BEDT-TTF Salts: Relationship between Conducting Property, Time-Averaged Site Charge and Inter-Molecular Distance

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The relationship between the conducting behavior and the degree of charge fluctuation in the β″-type BEDT-TTF salts is reviewed from the standpoints of vibrational spectroscopy and crystal structure. A group of β″-type ET salts demonstrates the best model compounds for achieving the above relationship because the two-dimensional structure is simple and great diversity in conducting behavior is realized under ambient pressure. After describing the requirement for the model compound, the methodology for analyzing the results of the vibrational spectra is presented. Vibrational spectroscopy provides the time-averaged molecular charge, the charge distribution in the two-dimensional layer, and the inter-molecular interactions, etc. The experimental results applied to 2/3-filled and 3/4-filled β″-type ET salts are reported. These experimental results suggest that the conducting property, the difference in the time-averaged molecular charges between the ionic and neutral-like sites, the alternation in the inter-molecular distances and the energy levels in the charge distributions are relevant to one another. The difference in the time-averaged molecular charges, ∆ρ, is a useful criterion for indicating conducting behavior. All superconductors presented in this review are characterized as small but finite ∆ρ.

Pharmaceuticals, Vol. 5, Pages 727-744: Probiotics and Atopic Dermatitis in Children

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

There is increasing interest in the potential beneficial role of probiotic supplementation in the prevention and treatment of atopic diseases in children. Probiotics are defined as ingested live microorganisms that, when administered in an adequate amount, confer a health benefit to the host. They are mainly represented by Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Several epidemiological data demonstrate that intestinal microflora of atopic children is different from the one of healthy children. Many literature data show that probiotics may modulate the intestinal microflora composition and may have immunomodulatory effect. Based on this hypothesis, probiotics are supposed to confer benefits to allergic diseases. Administration of probiotics when a natural population of indigenous intestinal bacteria is still developing could theoretically influence immune development by favoring the balance between Th1 and Th2 inflammatory responses. For this reason, some studies have evaluated the potential impact of probiotics supplementation in the prevention of atopic dermatitis, with contrasting results. Clinical improvement in immunoglobulin (Ig)E-sensitized (atopic) eczema following probiotic supplementation has been reported in some published studies and the therapeutic effects of probiotics on atopic dermatitis seemed to be encouraging. However, as far as the usefulness of probiotics as a prevention strategy is concerned, results are still inconclusive. In fact, the clinical benefits of probiotic therapy depend upon numerous factors, such as the type of bacteria, dosing regimen, delivery method and other underlying host factors, such as age and diet. More studies are still needed to definitively prove the role of probiotics in the treatment of allergic eczema.

Societies, Vol. 2, Pages 75-83: Expanding Ableism: Taking down the Ghettoization of Impact of Disability Studies Scholars

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

This paper highlights the utility of an expanded ableism concept beyond how it is used in disability studies; expanding the concept of ableism so it connects with all aspects of societies and making ableism applicable to many academic fields. It introduces this expanded form of ableism as a new angle of cultural research and suggests it to be one possible venue for disability studies scholars to escape the ghettoization of their impact.

Cells, Vol. 1, Pages 284-312: Regulation of the Autophagic Bcl-2/Beclin 1 Interaction

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Autophagy is an intracellular degradation process responsible for the delivery of cellular material to the lysosomes. One of the key mechanisms for control of autophagy is the modulation of the interaction between the autophagic protein Beclin 1 and the members of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family (e.g., Bcl-2, Bcl-XL and Mcl-1). This binding is regulated by a variety of proteins and compounds that are able to enhance or inhibit the Bcl-2/Beclin 1 interaction in order to repress or activate autophagy, respectively. In this review we will focus on this interaction and discuss its characteristics, relevance and regulation.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 2263-2287: Towards Energy Demand Reduction in Social Housing Buildings: Envelope System Optimization Strategies

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

This work evaluates the potential for the reduction of energy demand in residential buildings by acting on the exterior envelope, both in newly constructed buildings and in the retrofitting of existing stock. It focuses on analysing social housing buildings in Mediterranean areas and on quantifying the scope of that reduction in the application of different envelope design strategies, with the purpose of prioritizing their application based on their energy efficiency. The analyses and quantifications were made by means of the generation of energy models with the TRNSYS tool for simple or combined solutions, identifying possible potentials for reduction of the energy demand from 20% to 25%, basically by acting on the windows. The case study was a newly built social housing building of a closed block type located in Seville (Spain). Its constructive techniques and the insulation level of its envelope are standardized for current buildings widespread across Mediterranean Europe.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 2248-2262: Kinetics of the Formation and Dissociation of Gas Hydrates from CO2-CH4 Mixtures

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the form of its hydrates in natural methane (CH4) hydrate reservoirs, via CO2/CH4 exchange, is an attractive pathway that also yields valuable CH4 gas as product. In this paper, we describe a macroscale experiment to form CO2 and CH4-CO2 hydrates, under seafloor-mimic conditions, in a vessel fitted with glass windows that provides visualization of hydrates throughout formation and dissociation processes. Time resolved pressure and temperature data as well as images of hydrates are presented. Quantitative gas conversions with pure CO2, calculated from gas chromatographic measurements yielded values that range from 23 – 59% that correspond to the extent of formed hydrates. In CH4-rich CH4-CO2 mixed gas systems, CH4 hydrates were found to form preferentially.

Chalking things up with Dokuro

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 07:39 PM PDT

You will believe a member of the undead can feel love in Game Arts and GungHo's inspiring platformer.

Can a representative of the undead ever find love and gain the affection of a radiant human princess in a gothic setting? That's the question Game Arts and GungHo poses in its upcoming 2D puzzle-laden platformer, Dokuro.

You play the title character, a diminutive undead skeleton, who has to lead a princess captured by the Dark Lord to her freedom. Players will need to go through the different sections of the impossibly-large castle, as they tax their brains with all sorts of puzzles.

Luckily, the skeleton has a few tricks of his own to guide the princess from point A to B. You can make the skeleton double-jump to reach high places, and move like the wind to trigger switches. He also has a club he can use to stun and knock enemies away, but doesn't hurt them in the slightest.

The puzzles we saw involved moving targets In one stage, we needed to light up a powder keg by using a nearby fire demon. Because it was jumping around, we had to time our swing so that it landed close to the keg.

The skeleton needs more than just a calcium-crafted club for defense; that's where the hero form comes into play. With either a double-tap on the front or rear touchpad, Dokuro transforms into a prince that can not only slash enemies to their deaths, but also carry the princess to bypass small ledges or other manageable obstacles. The potion meter on the right side of the screen displays how long you've got until you revert back to your bony form.

In addition, you have access with chalk powers; by selecting the color type of chalk with the left trigger, you can draw lines on the touch screen to alter the environment. Using a white chalk line connects severed ropes onto heavy objects so that they stay suspended, while using a red chalk lets you light up fuses to blow up powder kegs.

We played through five stages in our demo, with each stage consisting of ten segments and its own brain teasers. While the first stage was a tutorial about the game's controls and mechanics, we ran into a bit of trouble with some of the puzzles on the third stage and beyond. Some require you to lay out a makeshift bridge of boxes while clearing a path of beasties, while others required us to fly across the area using a blimp while capping off fire traps using crates.

One puzzle forced us to use metal casings as platforms, and when combined with fire traps the metal platforms eventually became dangerously hot. In another instance we needed to shoot the princess out of a cannon and adjust its trajectory so that she didn't smash her face through a spiked barrier. Dokuro's puzzles require a bit of thinking, as well as speedy platforming and navigation, especially those with timers.

Restarting a puzzle was quick and painless should our previous efforts have failed. In fact, you have the option to skip up to ten puzzles if your brain can't handle particular conundrums. To earn back a skip option, you need only head back to the puzzle that stumped you and complete it.

The game also throws in a boss fight or two for good measure. We came across one creative one and one that felt anticlimactic given Dokuro's puzzle-encrusted motive. The first boss, the Guardian, jumps around on three highlighted spots on the ground while attempting to pound you. While you can heap on the damage in hero form, we found it easier to wait until it did a stomp bringing down a crate with spikes on top of it, then drag it to one of the landing spots; dealing heavy damage and stunning it momentarily for you to land a few hits.

The other boss, the Chef, is a spider-like demon who will throw fish bones at you from a distance. Hitting the nearby bell will bring the Chef's platform closer so you can inflict prince power on him. You just have to time your dodges from its powder attack and cleaver swings. Hopefully the remaining boss fights are just as creative as the rest of the game because the fight with the Chef is as dry as our protagonist's complexion.

Dokuro's art style is unique to say the least; relying on chalk scribbling and 2D animations. It isn't entirely black and white, but the game's look is what you would get if The Nightmare Before Christmas was hand-drawn on a black board frame by frame. The monsters are more cartoony than horrifying, and the main protagonist is adorable to a point of sadness that his default form isn't noticeable by the object of his affection.

While the drive of the game is to see how the narrative ends, the puzzles and decor are obvious highlights. We definitely enjoyed our stay in the gothic and complex chalkboard world, and we're eager to see more on how the story plays out.

Look for Dokuro's 2D action on the PS Vita right now as it just launched on July 5 with both Japanese and English subtitles. A North American and European release has yet to be announced.
