EA agrees to give up NCAA Football exclusivity

Proposed settlement to anti-trust suit over pigskin monopoly would see publisher give up its grip on the college football license for at least five years, starting in 2014.

The days of Electronic Arts' long-held football exclusivity could be numbered. According to attorneys representing consumers in a class-action antitrust lawsuit over EA's exclusive hold of multiple football league licenses, the publisher has agreed to a proposed settlement that would commit it to going at least five years without NCAA Football exclusivity, as well as paying out a potential $27 million to wronged customers.

EA might not be the only game in town much longer.

Under the terms of the settlement, EA will let its current agreement with the NCAA lapse in 2014, and will not renew it for at least five years. It also stipulates that the publisher won't sign an exclusive deal with the Arena Football League for at least five years.

As for the payouts, consumers who purchased an EA football title for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, or Xbox could be entitled to up to $6.79 per game, while those who purchased a current-generation football game from the publisher could get up to $1.95 per game.

The proposed settlement was filed with the court last week, but must be approved before it can be made final.

Originally filed in 2008, the class-action suit focused on EA's actions since 2004, when Take-Two Interactive's NFL 2K5 was released at a $20 price point and sold more than 2.9 million copies in the US. Take-Two's previous football game, ESPN NFL Football, sold fewer than 450,000 copies in the US. In response to the aggressive pricing of its competitor, EA dropped the price of Madden 2005 from $50 to $30.

Shortly afterward, EA signed exclusive deals with the NFL, NCAA, and AFL. With no competitor from Take-Two the following year, EA released Madden 2006 at a $50 price point.

Quicksilver is a light, fast and free Mac application that gives you the power to control your Mac with keystrokes alone.

Performance of deleting scheduled tasks is much improved.
CCC previously encountered some performance problems when simultaneously saving very large numbers of scheduled tasks (e.g. > 29). These problems should now be resolved. This is most applicable when updating CCC, or when CCC has been moved and all tasks must be re-saved at the same time.

Tweetbot for Mac is finally available! However it may not be quite as you had hoped. Developing for the Mac is no easy task, especially a full-featured Twitter client. However, we've gotten to a point where while not complete, it is useable. We've decided to release it as a public alpha to a) motivate us to finish faster, and b) get feedback to help us build the best Mac incarnation of Tweetbot we can make. You can love it or hate it, but rest assured it will only get much much better from here.

What can you expect from the Alpha?

Bugs! Lots of them.

Don't say we didn't warn you. Sending us bug and crash reports will help us out a lot. You can do so by hitting "Send Feedback" from the Help menu in Tweetbot for Mac.

Missing features.

We've been focusing on replicating the core features of our iOS versions. Features like multiple windows will be coming in the future. You can open a new window by hitting command-shift-n, but rest assure it will be much more elegant in the future.

Disturbing graphics and performance issues.

Okay, not disturbing to most of you, but some designers can get pretty disgusted by the slightest mis-aligned pixel. Don't be alarmed, we plan on making everything as beautiful and pixel perfect as we can. Throwing things on the canvas is just part of our process. And no, the egg icon isn't the final icon. It was thrown together for alpha/beta purposes. We also spend most of our time optimizing performance towards the end of development.

No support.

This is a public alpha so run it at your own risk. When you run into issues, we'd love it if you would send us a report. However we can't respond or spend time helping you get things up and running or else we'll end up spending time with support and not getting the app done.

No Notification Center or iCloud support (in the alpha/beta).

There's no way we can offer them until the app is signed and goes through the app store. They will work in the shipping product.

Updates and Expiring alpha/betas.

Updates will be automatically pushed out to you. We suggest you install them as each new build will fix bugs and possibly add new functionality. Old builds will also expire after a certain period of time.

Fopydo 2.5.1 - Create PDF documents from images.. (Free)

Fopydo is short for photocopy documents - it creates PDF documents from images taken with digital cameras, cell phones or scanners.. The program was designed as a communication tool - all instructions are collected up-front and then the task is executed in the background, even the user interface can be closed after pressing Go. Results are very compact in size and can be saved or emailed securely (with 128-bit encryption). In addition to PDF related functions Fopydo can OCR texts in a number of languages and save results in a text document (open source Tesseract OCR engine is embedded in the application). Fixes issue with crashes related to non-ASCII characters in picture paths
The primary enhancement in this version is related to generation and scanning of barcode pages.
Use Tools->Barcode Generator option to create a PDF document with barcodes (one barcode per page). You define the barcode content - a prefix and sequence number.
You can scan several documents into a single TIFF file, place a barcode page before the first page of each document. The same applies to capturing documents with a camera: capture the image of the barcode page before the first page of each document.
Drag or paste a single TIFF file (from the scanner) or all captured images (from camera) into Fopydo "Images". Press Document button and select option 'Barcode page before first document page'.
Other enhancements: added Skip button to allow bypassing processing of documents that were scanned poorly
