Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 4213-4236: A Real-Time Measurement System for Long-Life Flood Monitoring and Warning Applications

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:00 AM PDT

A flood warning system incorporates telemetered rainfall and flow/water level data measured at various locations in the catchment area. Real-time accurate data collection is required for this use, and sensor networks improve the system capabilities. However, existing sensor nodes struggle to satisfy the hydrological requirements in terms of autonomy, sensor hardware compatibility, reliability and long-range communication. We describe the design and development of a real-time measurement system for flood monitoring, and its deployment in a flash-flood prone 650 km2 semiarid watershed in Southern Spain. A developed low-power and long-range communication device, so-called DatalogV1, provides automatic data gathering and reliable transmission. DatalogV1 incorporates self-monitoring for adapting measurement schedules for consumption management and to capture events of interest. Two tests are used to assess the success of the development. The results show an autonomous and robust monitoring system for long-term collection of water level data inmany sparse locations during flood events.

The gameplay is true to the classic era of button mashing brawlers, as players choose from a diverse cast of characters and take to the streets to battle endless waves of thugs and ruffians.  But Fist Puncher offers a deeper experience than the quarter eating games that made the genre famous, including RPG elements and extensive unlockable content.  ?Think Double Dragon meets Castle Crashers?, says studio co-founder Jake Lewandowski.

The player steps into the role of battle commander, charged by the emperor with the duty to expand the empire's territories.  To do so, the player must destroy the enemy strongholds present on each of the outlying islands that serve as the game's stages.  The island's evil natives are impressively intimidating opponents, and victory does not come easily.  In order to successfully take the ten islands, the enemy forces on each must be overwhelmed and their fortress destroyed.  Each island consists of five stages; there are also ten additional hidden levels for the player who proves his or her worthiness as a conqueror.

Shooting Warrior gives players all of the tools necessary to enact their own personalized strategy.  With three heroes, nine soldier types, and nine hidden characters to unlock, upgrade, and deploy, the game's offers a satisfying variety of fighting forces.  Specialty items are an additional aid against the 35 enemy types and five challenging bosses.  Equipment as well as characters can be upgraded.  Numerous options present the opportunity to refine tactics and keep Shooting Warrior fresh and fun.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 4187-4212: Reducing False Negative Reads in RFID Data Streams Using an Adaptive Sliding-Window Approach

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Unreliability of the data streams generated by RFID readers is among the primary factors which limit the widespread adoption of the RFID technology. RFID data cleaning is, therefore, an essential task in the RFID middleware systems in order to reduce reading errors, and to allow these data streams to be used to make a correct interpretation and analysis of the physical world they are representing. In this paper we propose an adaptive sliding-window based approach called WSTD which is capable of efficiently coping with both environmental variation and tag dynamics. Our experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Entropy, Vol. 14, Pages 642-653: Association of Finite-Time Thermodynamics and a Bond-Graph Approach for Modeling an Endoreversible Heat Engine

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:00 AM PDT

In recent decades, the approach known as Finite-Time Thermodynamics has provided a fruitful theoretical framework for the optimization of heat engines operating between a heat source (at temperature ) and a heat sink (at temperature ). The aim of this paper is to propose a more complete approach based on the association of Finite-Time Thermodynamics and the Bond-Graph approach for modeling endoreversible heat engines. This approach makes it possible for example to find in a simple way the characteristics of the optimal operating point at which the maximum mechanical power of the endoreversible heat engine is obtained with entropy flow rate as control variable. Furthermore it provides the analytical expressions of the optimal operating point of an irreversible heat engine where the energy conversion is accompanied by irreversibilities related to internal heat transfer and heat dissipation phenomena. This original approach, applied to an analysis of the performance of a thermoelectric generator, will be the object of a future publication.

Micromachines, Vol. 3, Pages 270-278: Capacitive Tactile Sensor Based on Dielectric Oil Displacement out of a Parylene Dome into Surrounding Channels

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:00 AM PDT

We propose a concept of a flexible sensor array using a novel capacitive force sensor not having a vulnerable electrode on the force applied site. It has a polymer domed structure inside which silicone oil is contained. When the force is applied, the oil is pushed into the surrounding thin channels, where the change in capacitance due to the inflowing dielectric oil is measured between two electrodes on the top and bottom surfaces of the channel. Since the channel does not have a directly applied external force to it, the electrodes do not suffer from damage problems. The change in capacitance was simulated using a simplified flow model. The first trial device of the sensing element has been fabricated. A sensitivity of 0.05 pF/gf was achieved.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 4172-4186: A High Sensitivity Three-Dimensional-Shape Sensing Patch Prepared by Lithography and Inkjet Printing

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:00 AM PDT

A process combining conventional photolithography and a novel inkjet printing method for the manufacture of high sensitivity three-dimensional-shape (3DS) sensing patches was proposed and demonstrated. The supporting curvature ranges from 1.41 to 6.24 ´ 10−2 mm−1 and the sensing patch has a thickness of less than 130 μm and 20 ´ 20 mm2 dimensions. A complete finite element method (FEM) model with simulation results was calculated and performed based on the buckling of columns and the deflection equation. The results show high compatibility of the drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printing with photolithography and the interferometer design also supports bi-directional detection of deformation. The 3DS sensing patch can be operated remotely without any power consumption. It provides a novel and alternative option compared with other optical curvature sensors.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 4156-4171: Spatial Heterogeneity of Autoinducer Regulation Systems

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Autoinducer signals enable coordinated behaviour of bacterial populations, a phenomenon originally described as quorum sensing. Autoinducer systems are often controlled by environmental substances as nutrients or secondary metabolites (signals) from neighbouring organisms. In cell aggregates and biofilms gradients of signals and environmental substances emerge. Mathematical modelling is used to analyse the functioning of the system. We find that the autoinducer regulation network generates spatially heterogeneous behaviour, up to a kind of multicellularity-like division of work, especially under nutrient-controlled conditions. A hybrid push/pull concept is proposed to explain the ecological function. The analysis allows to explain hitherto seemingly contradicting experimental findings.
