Namco Bandai biggest money-maker for March in Japan

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 09:50 PM PDT

One Piece: Kaizoku Musou for PS3 main reason for high software revenues.

Namco Bandai was recently declared the biggest software revenue earner for the month of March in Japan, according to a recent article in Famitsu. The company that made Pac Man and Tekken took 36.8 percent of software revenues for the entire month, bumping down Nintendo and Sega who were at second and third place respectively.

The biggest contributing factor was the release of PS3 exclusive title One Piece: Kaizoku Musou which came out on March 1 in Japan. Developed by Omega Force (the team behind the Dynasty Warriors franchise), the game sold a total of 771,000 units. The PSP adaptation of Mahou Majo Madoka Magica also sold 79,000 units for the month.

In related news, Nintendo's top titles for the month were Kid Icarus: Uprising and the 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the 2012 London Olympics. The former sold 144,000 units while the latter sold 105,000 units for the entire month. The other two companies just below Namco Bandai, Nintendo, and Sega were Capcom and The Pokemon Company; the former represented 6.9 percent of the revenues chart, while the latter represented 6.3 percent.

The rest of the companies in order of the top 10 list were Konami, Tecmo Koei, Square Enix, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Idea Factory. For more information on Namco Bandai's top-selling title, check out GameSpot's video segment on One Piece: Kaizoku Musou.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 4934-4951: Assessing Ambiguity of Context Data in Intelligent Environments: Towards a More Reliable Context Managing System

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Modeling and managing correctly the user context in Smart Environments is important to achieve robust and reliable systems. When modeling reality we must take into account its ambiguous nature. Considering the uncertainty and vagueness in context data information it is possible to attain a more precise picture of the environment, thus leading to a more accurate inference process. To achieve these goals we present an ontology that models the ambiguity in intelligent environments and a data fusion and inference process that takes advantage of that extra information to provide better results. Our system can assess the certainty of the captured measurements, discarding the unreliable ones and combining the rest into a unified vision of the current user context. It also models the vagueness of the system, combining it with the uncertainty to obtain a richer inference process.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 4918-4933: A New Methodology for Vibration Error Compensation of Optical Encoders

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Optical encoders are sensors based on grating interference patterns. Tolerances inherent to the manufacturing process can induce errors in the position accuracy as the measurement signals stand apart from the ideal conditions. In case the encoder is working under vibrations, the oscillating movement of the scanning head is registered by the encoder system as a displacement, introducing an error into the counter to be added up to graduation, system and installation errors. Behavior improvement can be based on different techniques trying to compensate the error from measurement signals processing. In this work a new "ad hoc" methodology is presented to compensate the error of the encoder when is working under the influence of vibration. The methodology is based on fitting techniques to the Lissajous figure of the deteriorated measurement signals and the use of a look up table, giving as a result a compensation procedure in which a higher accuracy of the sensor is obtained.

Brain Sciences, Vol. 2, Pages 147-175: The “Id” Knows More than the “Ego” Admits: Neuropsychoanalytic and Primal Consciousness Perspectives on the Interface Between Affective and Cognitive Neuroscience

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

It is commonly believed that consciousness is a higher brain function. Here we consider the likelihood, based on abundant neuroevolutionary data that lower brain affective phenomenal experiences provide the "energy" for the developmental construction of higher forms of cognitive consciousness. This view is concordant with many of the theoretical formulations of Sigmund Freud. In this reconceptualization, all of consciousness may be dependent on the original evolution of affective phenomenal experiences that coded survival values. These subcortical energies provided a foundation that could be used for the epigenetic construction of perceptual and other higher forms of consciousness. From this perspective, perceptual experiences were initially affective at the primary-process brainstem level, but capable of being elaborated by secondary learning and memory processes into tertiary-cognitive forms of consciousness. Within this view, although all individual neural activities are unconscious, perhaps along with secondary-process learning and memory mechanisms, the primal sub-neocortical networks of emotions and other primal affects may have served as the sentient scaffolding for the construction of resolved perceptual and higher mental activities within the neocortex. The data supporting this neuro-psycho-evolutionary vision of the emergence of mind is discussed in relation to classical psychoanalytical models.

Societies, Vol. 2, Pages 27-41: Turbulent Trajectories: African Migrants on Their Way to the European Union

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Sub-Saharan African migration towards the European Union (EU) belongs to one of the most stigmatized forms of migration of the 21st century. It is strongly characterized by EU's restrictive migration policies. As a consequence, migrants who are aspiring to reach the EU often undertake fragmented and dangerous journeys to the North. This contribution attempts to gain more empirical insights into these migratory journeys. It is based on a 'trajectory ethnography' that combines in-depth interviews with sub-Saharan Africans, who are waiting in Morocco and Turkey to enter the EU, with a longitudinal strategy to follow some of these respondents over longer periods of time. With this longitudinal element I was in particular able to grasp expected steps and unexpected turns in individual migration trajectories. By discussing three main components (the motivation, facilitation and velocity) of journeys, this contribution puts into perspective the unidirectional and often frictionless metaphors of migration—as if migrants move like 'flows' and 'waves'.

Molecules, Vol. 17, Pages 4604-4611: Extraction and Characterization of Chitin from the Beetle Holotrichia parallela Motschulsky

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Insect chitin was isolated from adult Holotrichia parallela by treatment with 1 M HCl and 1 M NaOH, following by 1% potassium permanganate solution for decolorization. The yield of chitin from this species is 15%. This insect chitin was compared with the commercial a-chitin from shrimp, by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. Both chitins exhibited similar chemical structures and physicochemical properties. Adult H. parallela is thus a promising alternative source of chitin.

IJMS, Vol. 13, Pages 4860-4872: Preparation, Characterization and Thermal Degradation of Polyimide (4-APS/BTDA)/SiO2 Composite Films

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Polyimide/SiO2 composite films were prepared from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and poly(amic acid) (PAA) based on aromatic diamine (4-aminophenyl sulfone) (4-APS) and aromatic dianhydride (3,3,4,4-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride) (BTDA) via a sol-gel process in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). The prepared polyimide/SiO2 composite films were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The FTIR results confirmed the synthesis of polyimide (4-APS/BTDA) and the formation of SiO2 particles in the polyimide matrix. Meanwhile, the SEM images showed that the SiO2 particles were well dispersed in the polyimide matrix. Thermal stability and kinetic parameters of the degradation processes for the prepared polyimide/SiO2 composite films were investigated using TGA in N2 atmosphere. The activation energy of the solid-state process was calculated using Flynn–Wall–Ozawa's method without the knowledge of the reaction mechanism. The results indicated that thermal stability and the values of the calculated activation energies increased with the increase of the TEOS loading and the activation energy also varied with the percentage of weight loss for all compositions.

IJMS, Vol. 13, Pages 4839-4859: Quercetin and Epigallocatechin Gallate Induce in Vitro a Dose-Dependent Stiffening and Hyperpolarizing Effect on the Cell Membrane of Human Mononuclear Blood Cells

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The bioactivity of polyphenols is closely linked to their ability to interact with biological membranes. The study evaluates the in vitro effect of quercetin and epigallocatechin on the membrane anisotropy and transmembrane potential of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from 26 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients compared to 25 age matched controls. The in vitro assays were analyzed in correlation with the biochemical and inflammatory profile of the subjects and with insulin resistance parameters (HOMA-IR, plasma resistin) as well. For type 2 diabetes patients, the increase of HOMA-IR and resistin concentration was associated with a significant decrease of the PBMCs membrane anisotropy. The two tested polyphenols induced a dose-dependent hyperpolarizing effect and stiffening of the cell membranes for all tested subjects. Physiological levels of quercetin and epigallocatechin gallate had the tendency to normalize the PBMCs membrane anisotropy of the cells isolated from diabetes patients, bringing it to the level of cells isolated from normoglycemic ones. Epigallocatechin gallate induced higher effects compared to quercetin on the membranes isolated from subjects with higher cardiovascular risk. The decrease of membrane fluidity and the hyperpolarizing effect could explain the cardiovascular protective action of the tested compounds.
