GRID 2 - GR Review

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:35 AM PDT

Off the grid.
It's been a while since I played a fun racing game, and perhaps it owes something to the fact that Grid 2 feels bizarrely more like a combat or variety show-style racing game at times. Grid 2's plot (yeah, a plot!) is that race entrepreneur Patrick Callahan sees promise in a street racer (yourself) and decides that you're his ticket to helping him build his World Series Racing franchise. The idea is fun and makes for a good narrative to hold together the game's style.

Grid 2 is made up of a series of different race styles and types, each with different objectives. There are standard races—most of which take place on city streets, though you do occasionally find your way onto a race track—eliminator rounds, time attacks, car challenges, and event challenges with their own specific goals. The story holds this together loosely by having you as the driver having to impress local racers around the globe in order to get them to join Callahan's organization, which ends in a series of races of different types leading towards a championship event for each season (that must be unlocked by performing well in races to achieve a certain number of fans/experience).

The variety is really fun, though it does start to wear thin as you learn the tracks and curves, and the challenge begins to fade later in the game; with even some early races feeling way too easy. Grid 2 is an arcade racer, and while the cars feel a little more realistic than most, its best attribute is the illusion of speed that it creates (even if it turns out, in playback after the race is over, you were driving at a snail's pace). Grid 2 always feels fast, and any ...

Beejumbled - Preview

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:06 AM PDT

These spelling bees make it more than your average word jumble game.

Beejumbled is about as slick as 3D cartoon bees facilitating a word-jumble game can be, which makes sense, with Take Two-owned developer Cat Daddy Games at the helm. The bee animations are smooth and cute, and it has a level of polish you don't normally see in iOS, Amazon, and Android casual games.

In Beejumbled you start by picking an avatar; at first you only have a generic male and female choice, but the game has themed bees to be unlocked with point-total thresholds. The themed bees aren't just cosmetic, either; they get a point bonus for words related to their theme. For instance, the opponent of the first level is a pirate-themed bee, and purchasing him allows you to get extra points for using "R" words.

Beejumbled's single player currently has nine boards, each with a different themed opponent and random generated letter content, so you'll never play the same game twice. Though there isn't a time restriction in the main mode, difficulty scales naturally by forcing you to score more points to win in each successive round; so you run out of easier or more standard words towards the end of later rounds.

The game is free-to-play, and in-game currency is in the form of honey drops, earned in gameplay. While it's possible to purchase more with real money, it's not necessary for the game. The in-game currency is used (in addition to buying new bees) to get one-off helper options that do things like show you the highest value word on the screen.

Unlike regular word jumble games, BeeJumbled is ...

Turd Birds - Preview

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 01:53 AM PDT

A casual, endless runner. Oh, and you poop on things.

Poop.

If the word, or synonyms like doody, sends you into a paroxysm of giggles, get ready to laugh, because Cat Daddy's mobile title Turd Birds is all about dropping loads. A brief video on launch reveals the premise, that a young man has created a helmet that gives him remote control over a bird, allowing him to control when it, ahem, rains guano from above.

Turd Birds is a free-to-play endless runner (the 2K representative called in an "endless pooper") published on iOS, Android, and Amazon. With flips of a finger you move your bird out of harm's way, and a tap of the screen drops bombs from above on people, and specific targets, below. Not that that's all there is to it.

Turd Birds connects with facebook and mines the pictures of your friends as potential targets at the end of the level. Not only that but leading up to the photo target are power-ups that change poop consistency and color. The power-ups are different food items; hamburgers, donuts, etc., and the more you collect, the more coins you receive. Coins can be spent on better power-ups and other bonuses.

Collecting feathers, which similarly has you dashing close to obstacles, allows you to unlock other birds with special abilities. I just had to write them down:

Beebee: a hummingbird with rapid poop.
Otis Splotus: a pigeon with mini-egg refill.
Hootie Tootie: an owl with easy power-ups. Sergeant Squirts: a bald eagle with perma-rockets.

While it appeared that you could purchase the flying feathered fertilizers with real money, ...
