Disk Arbitrator 0.4.2 - Manage file-system mounting in support of forensic procedures. ()

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 03:03 AM PDT

Disk Arbitrator is a forensic utility designed to help the user ensure that the correct procedures are followed during imaging of a disk device. It is essentially a user interface to the disk-arbitration framework, which enables a program to participate in the management of block storage devices, including the automatic mounting of file systems. When enabled, Disk Arbitrator will block the mounting of file systems to avoid mounting as read-write and violating the integrity of the evidence.

It is important to note that Disk Arbitrator is not a software write blocker---it does not change the state of currently attached devices nor does it affect newly attached devices to force a device to be read-only. The user still must be careful to not accidentally write to a disk with a command such as "dd". Owing to this fact, a hardware or software write-blocker may still be desirable for the most sound procedure. Disk Arbitrator compliments a write-blocker with additional useful features and eliminates the typical forensic recommendation to "disable disk arbitration."

Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 7902-7915: Estimation of Melanin and Hemoglobin Using Spectral Reflectance Images Reconstructed from a Digital RGB Image by the Wiener Estimation Method

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

A multi-spectral diffuse reflectance imaging method based on a single snap shot of Red-Green-Blue images acquired with the exposure time of 65 ms (15 fps) was investigated for estimating melanin concentration, blood concentration, and oxygen saturation in human skin tissue. The technique utilizes the Wiener estimation method to deduce spectral reflectance images instantaneously from an RGB image. Using the resultant absorbance spectrum as a response variable and the extinction coefficients of melanin, oxygenated hemoglobin and deoxygenated hemoglobin as predictor variables, multiple regression analysis provides regression coefficients. Concentrations of melanin and total blood are then determined from the regression coefficients using conversion vectors that are numerically deduced in advance by the Monte Carlo simulations for light transport in skin. Oxygen saturation is obtained directly from the regression coefficients. Experiments with a tissue-like agar gel phantom validated the method. In vivo experiments on fingers during upper limb occlusion demonstrated the ability of the method to evaluate physiological reactions of human skin.

PaintMee 1.2 - Digital painting generator. (Commercial)

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 02:44 AM PDT

PaintMee is the world's most advanced digital painting generator. Unlike any other software, paintings are actually painted stroke by stroke, smoothly animated, starting with an empty canvas reaching incredible results.

Unique Features:
PaintMee shares many powerful features with its forerunner, SketchMee, which was selected by Apple as a worldwide, major front-page feature app on the Mac App Store, March 2011. It's awesome, be sure to check it out if you haven't already.

PaintMee is the next level in this new breed of art generating software making in-depth analysis of the source photos, then building the end results from scratch, not reusing any pixel data from the original.

The finished paintings are stored internally as complete 3D models made up of thousands of separate paint strokes, each an infinitely well-defined 3D object.

The new approach enables many powerful features, to name a few you can, for example:

  • Zoom in to inspect the paint. Paintings appear perfectly sharp at any zoom level.
  • Reapply the same settings any number of times, every time getting a new, different and unique painting.
  • Change the light source position to change the appearance of the paintings.
  • Create sharp, full size 16 megapixel paintings using tiny low-resolution source images as input.
  • Crop the resulting painting as much as you like. You can always save the remaining part as a sharp 16 megapixel JPEG.
Easy-to-use:
  • Open any photo. Or paste or drag it into PaintMee from iPhoto for example.
  • Try the 10 example parameter presets by hitting Cmd-1, Cmd-2 etc.
  • Explore the small set of powerful and well-balanced parameters, using only simple multiple-choice popup menus.
  • Save any painting as a 16 megapixel high quality JPEG, regardless of input photo size.
Fast:
  • The faster it runs, the more fun and productive it is to experiment with the settings. Therefore, no effort was spared in making PaintMee run at incredible speed, making full use of your hardware:
  • Every processor core in your Mac is put to work. Even if you have many!
  • The animation uses your graphics card, making it smooth even while the heavy number crunching takes place.
  • Tons of optimization work to make the engine runnable on iPhones and iPads, makes it fly on Macs.
  • Careful design keeps the application responsive at all times. No waiting for the spinning ball cursor!
  • In fact, it's so fast we provide you the option to lower the painting speed for a more relaxed or even meditative watching experience. Use a slider to exactly control how fast you wish the painting to be completed, from as-fast-as-possible (seconds) up to 1 hour!
-- PaintMee aims to explore the borderlands between art, technology, and entertainment. Come join the expedition!

Version 1.2:
  • Big news: Movie export! Save animated paintings in up to 480p high quality movies. (1080p in Pro version!)
  • Setting randomizer. Great for discovering weird setting combinations to start from!
  • Contrast effect added.
  • Under-the-hood improvements - now requires OS X 10.7.

  • OS X 10.7 or later

Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 7884-7901: Gait-Based Person Identification Robust to Changes in Appearance

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The identification of a person from gait images is generally sensitive to appearance changes, such as variations of clothes and belongings. One possibility to deal with this problem is to collect possible subjects' appearance changes in a database. However, it is almost impossible to predict all appearance changes in advance. In this paper, we propose a novel method, which allows robustly identifying people in spite of changes in appearance, without using a database of predicted appearance changes. In the proposed method, firstly, the human body image is divided into multiple areas, and features for each area are extracted. Next, a matching weight for each area is estimated based on the similarity between the extracted features and those in the database for standard clothes. Finally, the subject is identified by weighted integration of similarities in all areas. Experiments using the gait database CASIA show the best correct classification rate compared with conventional methods experiments.

Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 7872-7883: In situ Measurements of Phytoplankton Fluorescence Using Low Cost Electronics

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Chlorophyll a fluorometry has long been used as a method to study phytoplankton in the ocean. In situ fluorometry is used frequently in oceanography to provide depth-resolved estimates of phytoplankton biomass. However, the high price of commercially manufactured in situ fluorometers has made them unavailable to some individuals and institutions. Presented here is an investigation into building an in situ fluorometer using low cost electronics. The goal was to construct an easily reproducible in situ fluorometer from simple and widely available electronic components. The simplicity and modest cost of the sensor makes it valuable to students and professionals alike. Open source sharing of architecture and software will allow students to reconstruct and customize the sensor on a small budget. Research applications that require numerous in situ fluorometers or expendable fluorometers can also benefit from this study. The sensor costs US$150.00 and can be constructed with little to no previous experience. The sensor uses a blue LED to excite chlorophyll a and measures fluorescence using a silicon photodiode. The sensor is controlled by an Arduino microcontroller that also serves as a data logger.

Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 7860-7871: Recovery of Odorants from an Olfactometer Measured by Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometry

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The aim of the present study was to examine the recovery of odorants during the dilution in an olfactometer designed according to the European standard for dynamic olfactometry. Nine odorants in the ppmv-range were examined including hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, acetic acid, propanoic acid, butanoic acid, trimethylamine, 3-methylphenol and n-butanol. Each odorant was diluted in six dilution steps in descending order from 4,096 to 128 times dilutions. The final recovery of dimethyl sulfide and n-butanol after a 60-second pulse was only slightly affected by the dilution, whereas the recoveries of the other odorants were significantly affected by the dilution. The final recoveries of carboxylic acids, trimethylamine and 3-methylphenol were affected by the pulse duration and the signals did not reach stable levels within the 60-second pulse, while sulfur compounds and n-butanol reach a stable signal within a few seconds. In conclusion, the dilution of odorants in an olfactometer has a high impact on the recovery of odorants and when olfactometry is used to estimate the odor concentration, the recoveries have to be taken into consideration for correct measurements.

Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 7838-7859: Combination of RGB and Multispectral Imagery for Discrimination of Cabernet Sauvignon Grapevine Elements

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

This paper proposes a sequential masking algorithm based on the K-means method that combines RGB and multispectral imagery for discrimination of Cabernet Sauvignon grapevine elements in unstructured natural environments, without placing any screen behind the canopy and without any previous preparation of the vineyard. In this way, image pixels are classified into five clusters corresponding to leaves, stems, branches, fruit and background. A custom-made sensory rig that integrates a CCD camera and a servo-controlled filter wheel has been specially designed and manufactured for the acquisition of images during the experimental stage. The proposed algorithm is extremely simple, efficient, and provides a satisfactory rate of classification success. All these features turn out the proposed algorithm into an appropriate candidate to be employed in numerous tasks of the precision viticulture, such as yield estimation, water and nutrients needs estimation, spraying and harvesting.

Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 7827-7837: A Wireless Monitoring Sub-nA Resolution Test Platform for Nanostructure Sensors

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

We have constructed a wireless monitoring test platform with a sub-nA resolution signal amplification/processing circuit (SAPC) and a wireless communication network to test the real-time remote monitoring of the signals from carbon nanotube (CNT) sensors. The operation characteristics of the CNT sensors can also be measured by the ISD-VSD curve with the SAPC. The SAPC signals are transmitted to a personal computer by Bluetooth communication and the signals from the computer are transmitted to smart phones by Wi-Fi communication, in such a way that the signals from the sensors can be remotely monitored through a web browser. Successful remote monitoring of signals from a CNT sensor was achieved with the wireless monitoring test platform for detection of 0.15% methanol vapor with 0.5 nA resolution and 7 Hz sampling rate.

Viruses, Vol. 5, Pages 1536-1552: Simian Foamy Virus in Non-Human Primates and Cross-Species Transmission to Humans in Gabon: An Emerging Zoonotic Disease in Central Africa?

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

It is now known that all human retroviruses have a non-human primate counterpart. It has been reported that the presence of these retroviruses in humans is the result of interspecies transmission. Several authors have described the passage of a simian retrovirus, simian foamy virus (SFV), from primates to humans. To better understand this retroviral "zoonosis" in natural settings, we evaluated the presence of SFV in both captive and wild non-human primates and in humans at high risk, such as hunters and people bitten by a non-human primate, in Gabon, central Africa. A high prevalence of SFV was found in blood samples from non-human primates and in bush meat collected across the country. Mandrills were found to be highly infected with two distinct strains of SFV, depending on their geographical location. Furthermore, samples collected from hunters and non-human primate laboratory workers showed clear, extensive cross-species transmission of SFV. People who had been bitten by mandrills, gorillas and chimpanzees had persistent SFV infection with low genetic drift. Thus, SFV is presumed to be transmitted from non-human primates mainly through severe bites, involving contact between infected saliva and blood. In this review, we summarize and discuss our five-year observations on the prevalence and dissemination of SFV in humans and non-human primates in Gabon.

Viruses, Vol. 5, Pages 1516-1535: The Role of Bacterial Chaperones in the Circulative Transmission of Plant Viruses by Insect Vectors

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Persistent circulative transmission of plant viruses involves complex interactions between the transmitted virus and its insect vector. Several studies have shown that insect vector proteins are involved in the passage and the transmission of the virus. Interestingly, proteins expressed by bacterial endosymbionts that reside in the insect vector, were also shown to influence the transmission of these viruses. Thus far, the transmission of two plant viruses that belong to different virus genera was shown to be facilitated by a bacterial chaperone protein called GroEL. This protein was shown to be implicated in the transmission of Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) by the green peach aphid Myzus persicae, and the transmission of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) by the sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci. These tri-trophic levels of interactions and their possible evolutionary implications are reviewed.

Climate, Vol. 1, Pages 12-27: From Climate Advocacy to Public Engagement: An Exploration of the Roles of Environmental Non-Governmental Organisations

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The capacity of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to encourage public engagement with climate protection is analysed through a conceptual framework focused on six advocacy functions: issue framing, knowledge generation and dissemination, attribution of responsibility, lobbying, public mobilisation and agenda setting. This framework is used to organise and interpret the results of a fieldwork study of environmental NGOs, conducted in France, Germany and the UK. Key findings include the importance of the cross-linkage of climate with other categories of issue, NGO stress on knowledge as a precursor to action, a 'politics of accountability' in which the attribution of responsibility paves the way for making political demands, a preference for multi-layered lobbying, where process can be as important as product, and the need to adjust NGO mobilisation and agenda setting strategies in the aftermath of the 2009 Copenhagen negotiations and the financial crisis.

Arts, Vol. 2, Pages 46-76: Pleistocene Palaeoart of Asia

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

This comprehensive overview considers the currently known Pleistocene palaeoart of Asia on a common basis, which suggests that the available data are entirely inadequate to form any cohesive synthesis about this corpus. In comparison to the attention lavished on the corresponding record available from Eurasia's small western appendage, Europe, it is evident that Pleistocene palaeoart from the rest of the world has been severely neglected. Southern Asia, in particular, holds great promise for the study of early cognitive development of hominins, and yet this potential has remained almost entirely unexplored. Asia is suggested to be the key continent in any global synthesis of 'art' origins, emphasising the need for a comprehensive pan-continental research program. This is not just to counter-balance the incredible imbalance in favour of Europe, but to examine the topic of Middle Pleistocene palaeoart development effectively.

Agronomy, Vol. 3, Pages 497-507: Evaluation of Low Pressure Fogging System for Improving Crop Yield of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.): Grown under Heat Stress Conditions

Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

In Mediterranean regions, many tomato plants are grown throughout the hot summer period (May–September) in sheltered cultivation, mainly for plant protection reasons. Most of the shelters that are used are low cost net houses covered with 50 mesh insect proof net. In most cases these net houses have a flat roof and no ventilation or climate control measures. This insufficient ventilation during the hot summer leads to above optimal air temperatures and causes moderate heat stress inside the shelters, which leads to yield reduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of a simple and inexpensive low pressure fogging system installed in a naturally ventilated net house to lower temperatures and improve the yield during the summer. The study showed that in areas where relative air humidity (RH) during the daytime is less than 60%, tomato plants improved their performance when grown through the summer in net houses under moderate heat stress. Under fogging conditions pollen grain viability and fruit set were significantly improved. This improvement influenced the yield picked during September (104–136 DAP). However, total seasonal yield was not affected by the fogging treatment.
