Humanities, Vol. 2, Pages 292-312: Taking Rorty’s Irony Seriously

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Richard Rorty's Contingency, Irony and Solidarity (CIS) is an ambitious and provocative, but for many readers a deeply flawed work. This paper argues that many of its apparent flaws can be understood as integral to Rorty's attempt to write a work of private, post-theoretical irony. The paper's first section outlines the substantive theoretical claims about language, selfhood and community which Rorty proposes as an antiessentialist alternative to 'metaphysics'. The second identifies three difficulties—residual dualism, conceptual problems with the public-private distinction, and the work's self-referential consistency—which constitute serious, but obvious problems for those substantive claims. The third section argues that Rorty's metaphilosophical discussion of 'ironist theory' suggests CIS should be read as a personal work of irony which eschews theoretical ambitions, showing how this is consistent with and provides a motive for accepting the presence of conspicuous difficulties. The final section considers how the work's metaphilosophical views interact with its substantive theoretical claims. The work's irony is interpreted as resulting from the tension between these, so as to coexist rather than conflict with Rorty's enduring commitments to liberalism and pragmatism.

  • Quick access to iPhoto, Pictures folder, and Smart folders via Image Browser
  • Drag-and-drop between popular productivity apps
  • Many more features
Make your reports and presentations shine with Artboard.

Version 1.8:

What's New?
  • Layer Masking. By enabling Layer Masks, you can create complex clipping masks for each individual layer which add a powerful new creative dimension to your projects.
  • You can now use the Tab key to cycle through a series of overlapping objects to select them. This is useful in situations where directly clicking the object might be awkward or impossible, such as when one object completely covers another.
  • Your Artboard creations can now be directly shared to your favourite social networking sites or emailed using the new 'Share' toolbar button.
Bug Fixes
  • Hit-testing of text shapes and paths is now more reliable using a new "greeking" algorithm. This is available on OS X 10.7 and later.
  • A potential hang when disabling shadow rendering altogether was fixed.
  • A problem with the alignment of Core Image filter effects near the edges of the drawing was fixed.
  • A problem with the "Sticky Tools" setting being ignored when switching tools using the keyboard was fixed.
  • A problem that could cause very slow performance when a lot of stroked objects were in the drawing was fixed.
  • A problem where a saved file could not be reopened when certain Core Image filter effects were used was fixed.
Other Changes
  • The preference setting for "Auto-activate Layers" was moved from the Layer menu to the Preferences dialog.
  • Object alignment commands now align based on the object's path rather than the bounding box, which is strongly influenced by the style applied. This makes alignment much more consistent and useful.
  • Images exported in any of the bitmap formats (JPEG, PNG, TIFF) now use the Generic RGB colourspace rather than the device-specific colourspace. This maintains better colour fidelity as these images are subsequently used, such as on webpages, etc.

I suck at racing games.

It's true. Simulation racing games and I don't get along. Put me behind the wheel of a Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport and I'm likely to manage a real-life car accident. You'd find me on the side of the road. "I left you alone with my PS2 for an hour! How'd you wrap my car around a tree?" You asked me to play a racing game, and I suck at racing games. I told you already.

Regardless, my lust for PlayStation 4 experiences led me into Sony's massive E3 2013 booth. I've never seen a bigger space at the biggest expo in gaming, and plenty of next-gen kits were ready for the energetic gamers and writers. I sadled up to a DriveClub demo and truly entered the next-generation of racing games.

DriveClub makes for an interesting community experience, challenging you in differnet ways on different parts of every track. The devleoper pointed out these challenges as I raced through them: drift around this corner, reach a top speed on this straight away, set a fast lap time. An opponent popped up on my screen, along with their score and a sort of holographic outline, letting me know the area I had to excel in in each category.

A line on the track let me know that where the drift challenge started and stopped, so I wasted no time jamming on the left trigger to start a drift. The PS4's DualShock 4 controller met me with just enough resistance, but my lead foot was too eager and I spun out. Keeping those realistic physics in mind, I sped off to explore the rest of the track and decided to play more conservatively.

Apparently I hadn't learned my ...
