Biosensors, Vol. 2, Pages 291-304: Biomolecular Interaction Analysis of Gestrinone-anti-Gestrinone Using Arrays of High Aspect Ratio SU-8 Nanopillars

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

In this paper, label-free biosensing for antibody screening by periodic lattices of high-aspect ratio SU-8 nano-pillars (BICELLs) is presented. As a demonstration, the determination of anti-gestrinone antibodies from whole rabbit serum is carried out, and for the first time, the dissociation constant (KD = 6 nM) of antigen-antibody recognition process is calculated using this sensing system. After gestrinone antigen immobilization on the BICELLs, the immunorecognition was performed. The cells were interrogated vertically by using micron spot size Fourier transform visible and IR spectrometry (FT-VIS-IR), and the dip wavenumber shift was monitored. The biosensing assay exhibited good reproducibility and sensitivity (LOD = 0.75 ng/mL).

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 3064-3073: An Analysis of the Use of Biosludge as an Energy Source and Its Environmental Benefits in Taiwan

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The objective of this paper was to provide a preliminary analysis of energy utilization from biological wastewater treatment sludge (biosludge) in Taiwan, a densely populated country (estimate 640 persons/km2) with a high dependence (over 99%) on imported energy. The discussion focused on the status of biosludge generation and its management in the years 2004–2010. Findings showed that the main types of combustible waste (i.e., biosludge) produced by the industrial and agricultural sectors of Taiwan included food processing sludge, wine brewery sludge and agricultural sludge which may be reused as auxiliary fuel in the utilities (e.g., generator, boiler and incinerator). Furthermore, two conceptual biosludge-to-energy systems have been addressed with regard to the thermochemical conversion processes. One is to adopt direct combustion for power generation in the combined heat and power system. Another system uses pyrolysis and gasification for producing biochar (solid fuel), bio-oil (liquid fuel) and syngas (gas fuel). Based on their thermochemical properties and reported generation quantities, the energy potential and the environmental benefits of mitigating CO2 emissions were also analyzed in the study, showing around 1.1 × 103 TJ/year and 57 Gg CO2/year, respectively.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 3051-3063: Gamma Irradiation Induced Degradation of Orange Peels

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

In this study, gamma irradiation induced degradation of orange peels (OP) was investigated. The lignocellulosic biomass degradation was carried out at doses of 0 (control), 600, 1800 and 3500 kGy using a Co-60 gamma radiation source. The samples were tested for total and reducing sugars. The concentrations of total sugars ranged from 0.530 g∙g−1 in control sample to 0.382 g∙g−1 of dry weight in the sample which received the highest radiation dose. The reducing sugars content varying from 0.018 to 0.184 g∙g−1 of dry weight with the largest rise occurring in the sample irradiated at 3500 kGy. The concentrations of sucrose, glucose and fructose were determined. The changes generated in physico-chemical properties were determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and termogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG). The results show that OP was affected, but not significantly, which suggests that lignocellulose and sugars profiles were partially degraded after gamma irradiation.

Sustainability, Vol. 4, Pages 1806-1832: Small Modular Reactors for Enhancing Energy Security in Developing Countries

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

In recent years, small modular reactors (SMRs) have been attracting considerable attention around the world. SMR designs incorporate innovative approaches to achieve simplicity, modularity and speed of build, passive safety features, proliferation resistance, and reduced financial risk. The incremental capacity expansion associated with SMR deployment could provide a better match (than the large-scale reactors) to the limited grid capacity of many developing countries. Because of their lower capital requirements, SMRs could also effectively address the energy needs of small developing countries with limited financial resources. Although SMRs can have substantially higher specific capital costs as compared to large-scale reactors, they may nevertheless enjoy significant economic benefits due to shorter build times, accelerated learning effects and co-siting economies, temporal and sizing flexibility of deployment, and design simplification.

Sustainability, Vol. 4, Pages 1787-1805: The Race for Evolutionary Success

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The Earth appears to be at the beginning of sixth massive species extinction. This paper balances a review of the forces threatening species survival with a comprehensive scan of factors that could act as counterweights. These factors could lead to four types of evolution—cultural, regulatory, ecological, and technological—that could individually or in combination avert massive species extinction if humans implement solutions faster than new problems arise. Implications and future research opportunities are also explored.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 11271-11293: A Semi-Automatic Image-Based Close Range 3D Modeling Pipeline Using a Multi-Camera Configuration

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The generation of photo-realistic 3D models is an important task for digital recording of cultural heritage objects. This study proposes an image-based 3D modeling pipeline which takes advantage of a multi-camera configuration and multi-image matching technique that does not require any markers on or around the object. Multiple digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are adopted and fixed with invariant relative orientations. Instead of photo-triangulation after image acquisition, calibration is performed to estimate the exterior orientation parameters of the multi-camera configuration which can be processed fully automatically using coded targets. The calibrated orientation parameters of all cameras are applied to images taken using the same camera configuration. This means that when performing multi-image matching for surface point cloud generation, the orientation parameters will remain the same as the calibrated results, even when the target has changed. Base on this invariant character, the whole 3D modeling pipeline can be performed completely automatically, once the whole system has been calibrated and the software was seamlessly integrated. Several experiments were conducted to prove the feasibility of the proposed system. Images observed include that of a human being, eight Buddhist statues, and a stone sculpture. The results for the stone sculpture, obtained with several multi-camera configurations were compared with a reference model acquired by an ATOS-I 2M active scanner. The best result has an absolute accuracy of 0.26 mm and a relative accuracy of 1:17,333. It demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed low-cost image-based 3D modeling pipeline and its applicability to a large quantity of antiques stored in a museum.

Sleeping Dogs - GR Review

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 03:40 AM PDT

Why don't you have pork bun in your hand?!
I identify with Sleeping Dogs protagonist, Wei Shen. We're both Chinese-American, in our late twenties, appreciate the San Francisco Bay Area, have a sense of justice that teeters on the boundaries of the law, and tend to speak perfect American English even if people talk to us in Cantonese. All of this we have in common, like kindred spirits, despite the fact that I was born in the States and he was born in Hong Kong. At the same time, we both can't shake the uneasy feeling of estrangement in our "own country"—a fitting theme, as Sleeping Dogs is about an identity crisis.

Of course, for Wei Shen the issue is more pragmatic and immediate than nationalistic ties. As an undercover cop who has been assigned to infiltrate the fictional Sun On Yee Triad (based on the real Sun Yee On Triad), he leads an expected double life, one in which he must respect the law and break the law at the right time. The Triad gives him a license to kill, while the police lets him go if he ever gets caught. If this doesn't set the framework for vigilante justice, I don't what does.

Wei's mission is to ascend the hierarchy of the Sun On Yee, while relaying intelligence and dismantling the organization from within. Naturally, he struggles to maintain his cover as his violent loyalty to his fellow Triad family members jeopardizes his standing in the police and impairs his state of mind, a point which his handler Raymond is keen to make at every chance encounter. As the finale draws near, the line between right and wrong shifts beneath his feet, and Wei must choose how best to balance the scales of justice.

Unfortunately, the story doesn't delve deeply enough into Wei's character, ...
