Voltron: Defender of the Universe - GR Review

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 02:47 PM PST

How can you mess up giant lion robots?

Aside from zombies, the big trend reverberating through mass media these days seems to be "everything old is new again (especially when it's still old)". Making a game based on a retro animé and adhering to its tone without modernization could make for quite a fun time, and upon booting up Voltron: Defender of the Universe, I was quite amused by the seemingly accurate portrayal of this era of cartoon. Having never watched the show myself (I was more of a Power Rangers/TMNT kid), I could still appreciate the cheesy narration, blaring theme music, and overall '80s atmosphere with a grin.

Three hours later, I was left rather tired and unfulfilled.

Voltron is, unfortunately, painfully repetitive, and riddled with all manner of curiosities in its design. The best parts of the game are probably the ripped-straight-from-the-'80s animé clips in between each stage simply for how awkward and amusing they are. Actually playing the game could potentially be interesting for a group of friends in short bursts, but even so, it'd be more because of the company kept, while mocking the game, and the game's cheese than anything else.

Granted, it's cool to pause the game and hear: "Voltron will be back after these messages," and consequently, "And now: Back to Voltron!" when returning to gameplay. However, this is but a small glimmer of smart presentation in a pond of mediocre, off-putting dual-stick shooting. How it takes a team of giant robot lions and ...

Marine Drugs, Vol. 9, Pages 2622-2642: An Investigation into the Cytotoxic Effects of 13-Acetoxysarcocrassolide from the Soft Coral Sarcophyton crassocaule on Bladder Cancer Cells

Posted: 13 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Active compounds from natural products have been widely studied. The anti-tumor effects of 13-acetoxysarcocrassolide isolated from Formosan soft coral Sarcophyton crassocaule on bladder cancer cells were examined in this study. An MTT assay showed that 13-acetoxysarcocrassolide was cytotoxic to bladder female transitional cancer (BFTC) cells. We determined that the BFTC cells underwent cell death through apoptosis by flow cytometry. Due to the highly-migratory nature of the BFTC cells, the ability of 13-acetoxysarcocrassolide to stop their migration was assessed by a wound healing assay. To determine which proteins were affected in the BFTC cells upon treatment, a comparative proteomic analysis was performed. By LC-MS/MS analysis, we identified that 19 proteins were up-regulated and eight were down-regulated. Seven of the proteins were confirmed by western blotting analysis. This study reveals clues to the potential mechanism of the cytotoxic effects of 13-acetoxysarcocrassolide on BFTC cells. Moreover, it suggests that PPT1 and hnRNP F could be new biomarkers for bladder cancer. The results of this study are also helpful for the diagnosis, progression monitoring and therapeutic strategies of transitional cell tumors.

Marine Drugs, Vol. 9, Pages 2605-2621: Fucose-Containing Sulfated Polysaccharides from Brown Seaweeds Inhibit Proliferation of Melanoma Cells and Induce Apoptosis by Activation of Caspase-3 in Vitro

Posted: 13 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides (FCSPs) extracted from seaweeds, especially brown macro-algae, are known to possess essential bioactive properties, notably growth inhibitory effects on tumor cells. In this work, we conducted a series of in vitro studies to examine the influence of FCSPs products from Sargassum henslowianum C. Agardh (FSAR) and Fucus vesiculosus (FVES), respectively, on proliferation of melanoma B16 cells and to investigate the underlying apoptosis promoting mechanisms. Cell viability analysis showed that both FCSPs products, i.e., FSAR and FVES, decreased the proliferation of the melanoma cells in a dose-response fashion, with FSAR being more potent at lower dosages, and FVES being relatively more anti-proliferative than FSAR at higher dosages. Flow cytometric analysis by Annexin V staining of the melanoma cells exposed to the FCSPs products confirmed that both FSAR and FVES induced apoptosis. The FCSPs-induced apoptosis was evidenced by loss of plasma membrane asymmetry and translocation of the cell membrane phospholipids and was accompanied by the activation of caspase-3. The FCSPs bioactivity is proposed to be attributable to distinct structural features of the FCSPs, particularly the presence of sulfated galactofucans (notably in S. henslowianum) and sulfated fucans (notably in F. vesiculosus). This study thus indicates that unfractionated FCSPs may exert bioactive effects on skin cancer cells via induction of apoptosis through cascades of reactions that involve activation of caspase-3.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 3, Pages 2682-2703: Remote Sensing Images in Support of Environmental Protocol: Monitoring the Sugarcane Harvest in S˜ao Paulo State, Brazil

Posted: 13 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Traditional manual sugarcane harvesting requires the pre-harvest burning practice which should be gradually banned by 2021 for most of S˜ao Paulo State, Brazil, on cultivated sugarcane land (terrain slope ≤12%) according to State Law number 11241. To forward the end of this practice to 2014, a "Green Ethanol" Protocol was established in 2007. The present work aims at analyzing five years of continuous sugarcane harvest monitoring, based on remote sensing images, to evaluate the effectiveness of the Protocol, thus helping decision makers to establish public policies to meet the Protocol's expected goals. During the last five crop years, sugarcane acreage expanded by 1.5 million ha, which was compensated by a correspondent increase in the green harvested land. However, no significant reduction was observed in the amount of pre-harvest burned land over the same period. Based on the current trend, this goal is likely to be achieved one or two years later (2015–2016), which will be five or six years ahead of 2021 as the goal in the State Law number 11241 states. We thus conclude that the"Green Ethanol" Protocol has been effective with a positive impact on the increase of GH, especially on recently expanded sugarcane fields.
