nessViewer 2.9.3 - Media-control software for displaying photos, video, PDF.. (Demo)

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 02:40 AM PST

nessViewer offers multi-functionality by combining media player, media center, media server, media editor and preview tool. Its many functions include editing, arrangement and presentation of various media (pictures, movies, DVDs, PDFs). The integrated media center provides direct access to local media and many internet media providers. Switching to a specific media software is no longer necessary.

A main feature of nessViewer is the "Media Show" which allows it to arrange and save playlists for (later) presentations. In addition to the access to iPhoto or local volumes, the media show enables the user to integrate internet media without having to download them (Clipfish, DailyMotion, YouTube and others).

The media center offers a lot of internet media: Arte, BBC, DailyMotion, German television, Hulu, live broadcasting, Miro video podcasts, Spiegel online, YouTube and others. Of course, local media can be accessed too (Aperature, iPhoto, iTunes, folders and mounted volumes) and EyeTV movies can be started (even without the EyeTV application). Through the functionality of "virtual playlist", plenty of different media can be easily selected and continuously presented afterwards.

Comfortable handling by remote control: pictures, movies, DVDs, PDFs, media shows or internet content can be presented by nessViewer directly and easily via Apple remote control or the "NV Remote app" for iPhone / iPod touch. Thus your Mac turns into a perfect home cinema.

Return of Mat Ricardo's east London variety night

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 01:44 AM PST

Indie juggler, conjurer and impresario Mat Ricardo sez,

Earlier this month we launched the first in this season of Mat Ricardo's London Varieties - the combined comedy variety and interview show that comes live from the Bethnal Green Working Mens Club in London. We had a ball. You should have been there!

But it's ok, because next month's show is even better - cabaret superstars Frisky & Mannish, amazing dance troupe The Twilight Players, and the astonishing juggler and yo-yo-ist Arron Sparks will make up the variety part of the show, and then I'll be sitting down and chatting live on stage to legendary UK comedy writer and twitter guru Graham Linehan. Also, I'll be attempting the new trick that I promised to try to learn last month (newsflash - it's not going well...), we'll be showing some rare archive variety footage, I'll be telling you what happened when I was a guest on the Jonathan Ross Show last week, plus lots more actual fun surprises!

It's going to happen at the Bethnal Green Working Mens Club, East London, on March 8th. Doors 7pm, show 8pm sharp. It's a small venue, and tickets are limited.

Big in Japan Feb 13-19: New Love Plus, Binary Domain, Theatrhythm FF

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 09:12 PM PST

Konami's dating sim beats a Sega shooter and a Square Enix rhythm game for the top position; and 3DS units rise in sales.

Konami's New Love Plus dominated the top spot on the recent Media Create sales update this week, placing first, with 104,969 units sold.

The Love Plus series is a dating sim where players take girls out on dates, interact with them, and get them to confess their love. The 3DS iteration features augmented-reality dates, where players can use the 3DS camera to take girls to real-life places.

Just behind Konami's title are two big releases: Sega's Binary Domain and Square Enix's Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. The former comes in at second place, with 73,683 units sold, while the latter is at third place, with 67,206 units sold.

Binary Domain is a squad-based shooter set in Tokyo in the year 2080 where robots are fighting against humans. The game is the latest project from Toshihiro Nagoshi, who is well-known for his work on the Yakuza series. The shooter will be out in North American markets next week and in Asia ten days after the former region's release date.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is a music rhythm game where players have to hit the notes on the 3DS' touchscreen in time to the beat of the song. The game features more than 50 songs from throughout the RPG series. There is no word from Square Enix regarding a North American and European release of the title at this point in time.

The sole Vita title clinging on to the top 10 is Gravity Rush. The exclusive adventure title is at 10th place, with 53,680 units sold. Meanwhile, four 3DS titles had been consistently hanging on to the top 10--Mario Kart 7 at fourth place, with 22,015 units sold, and Super Mario 3D Land at fifth place, with 17,791 units sold. Capcom's Monster Hunter 3G is just below Nintendo's platformer, with 17,490 units sold, and the company's recent survival horror entry is at eighth place, with 15,666 units sold.

Once again, the 3DS is still the top-selling console for the past week. Nintendo sold 94,667 units of the portable console. Sony's three major consoles are still on the same position: the PS3 sold 21,993 units, while the PSP sold 14,824 units. The sales for the PS Vita took a slight dip from 13,939 units to 12,309 units.

Microsoft, Google and Netflix want to add DRM-hooks to W3C HTML5 standard

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 12:32 AM PST

A proposed anti-copying extension for the WC3's standard for HTML5 has been submitted by representatives of Google, Microsoft and Netflix. The authors take pains to note that this isn't "DRM" -- because it doesn't attempt to hide keys and other secrets from the user -- but in a mailing list post, they later admitted that this could be "addressed" by running the browser inside a proprietary hardware system that hid everything from the user.

Other WC3 members -- including another prominent Googler, Ian Hickson -- have called for the withdrawal of the proposal. Hickson called it "unethical." I agree, and would add "disingenuous," too, since the proposal disclaims DRM while clearly being intended to form a critical part of a DRM system.

In an era where browsers are increasingly the system of choice for compromising users' security and privacy, it is nothing short of madness to contemplate adding extensions to HTML standards that contemplate designing devices and software to deliberately hide their workings from users, and to prevent users from seeing what they're doing and changing that behavior if it isn't in their interests.

Writing on Ars Technica, Ryan Paul gives a good blow-by-blow look at the way that this extension is being treated in the W3C:

Mozilla's Robert O'Callahan warned that the pressure to provide DRM in browsers might lead to a situation where major browser vendors and content providers attempt to push forward a suboptimal solution without considering the implications for other major stakeholders.

Some of the discussion surrounding the Encrypted Media proposal seem to validate his concerns. Mozilla's Chris Pearce commented on the issue in a message on the W3C HTML mailing list and asked for additional details to shed light on whether the intended content protection scheme could be supported in an open source application.

"Can you highlight how robust content protection can be implemented in an open source webrowser?" he asked. "How do you guard against an open source web browser simply being patched to write the frames/samples to disk to enable (presumably illegal) redistribution of the protected content?"

Netflix's Mark Watson responded to the message and acknowledged that strong copy protection can't be implemented in an open source Web browser. He deflected the issue by saying that copy protection mechanisms can be implemented in hardware, and that such hardware can be used by open source browsers.

"Unethical" HTML video copy protection proposal draws criticism from W3C reps (Thanks, Rob!)
