Paperless ...Remember when everyone talked about how we would soon be a paperless society? Now it seems like we use paper more than ever. Let's face it - we need and we use paper. FlashToHTML5 is my very first Safari 5 Extension.

We all know it: the standard YouTube Flash Player is a big CPU and memory hog. That's exactly why I created FlashToHTML5, my very first extension for Safari 5.

If possible, FlashToHTML5 will replace the CPU and memory hogging YouTube Flash Player with a HTML5 player. Not only will it look nicer, you will also notice that your computer will run cooler and faster. If you use a laptop, you will also notice that the battery life of a fully charged battery will increase.

FlashToHTML5 will also automatically load the video at the highest quality available, WITHOUT advertisements! The only downside is that subtitles and user-captions are not displayed, but that's something that I may add support for in the future. ;-)

Some videos on YouTube are not available in a format that can be played by the HTML5 player, so if that's the case, FlashToHTML5 will automatically switch back to the standard YouTube Flash Player.

JG Ballard archive opens at the British Library

Jack sez, "A year in the gathering, JG Ballard's archive - or the closest that is likely to exist - opens at the British Library and contains, amongst other treats, multiple versions of manuscripts for Crash, letters, notes and an outline for an unwritten novel."
In line with his wishes, much of the archive comprises the progress of his texts, which are all here – with a few exceptions – as drafts, manuscripts or typescripts. But there is also plenty of personal and family material: photographs, postcards, faxed interviews. In May I was privileged to have had a sneak preview while it was still being catalogued by the archivist Chris Beckett, partly because I'm writing a book about Ballard. As it's entirely composed of artefacts – Ballard never owned a computer – perhaps this is the last solely non-digital literary archive of this stature.

For Claire Walsh, Ballard's partner, the manuscripts of Crash are the highlights (she objected to her name being used in a first draft and Ballard changed it to Catherine). "The feeling of it being written when it was red-hot in his mind," she says, "and the handwritten changes, I think are absolutely fascinating."

Big in Japan July 25-31: Rhythm Heaven

Nintendo's offbeat rhythm game still on top despite new Queen's Gate and Devil Survivor game; 3DS tumbles to fourth place.

Even with a second demonic invasion and fan service aplenty, Rhythm Heaven for the Wii is still holding out strong in first place on the latest Media Creates chart for Japan for the week of July 25 to July 31. The demanding and quirky rhythm game sold 81,938 copies on its second week. Meanwhile, newcomers Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos for the PSP and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 for the DS are at second and third place respectively. The former sold 66,959 units while the latter sold 63,008.

Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos is an RPG based on the popular visual combat books that feature suggestive depictions of female characters in combat. The game also features characters from other videogame properties like Mai Shiranui from the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series, Dizzy from the Guilty Gear series, Ivy from the SoulCalibur series, Lili from the Tekken series, and Cham Cham and Iroha from the Samurai Shodown series. Devil Survivor 2 pits players in the shoes of a male protagonist and his classmates as they combat the Septentrion invaders from taking over Japan. Gamers combat them by recruiting demons via devil pact-signing and engaging foes in a combination of turned-based combat and grid-based movement.

Other notable numbers include Wii Sports Resort still being on the top 10 with 20,424 units sold. The PS3 version of military simulator Operation Flashpoint: Red River makes its debut on the charts on 11th place with 13,331 units sold. The PS3 version of action RPG Dungeon Siege III is also on the charts on 18th place with 6,576 units sold on its debut week.

On the hardware front, the 3DS drops significantly to fourth place, selling 16,415 units, which is more or less half of the number sold on the previous sales chart. Both of Sony's consoles are on pole positions, with the PSP placed first with 36,659 units sold and the PS3 on second place with 20,704 units sold. The Wii is on third place with 18,232 units sold.

Namco Bandai announces Heroes Fantasia

PSP RPG to feature characters from numerous anime series like Sergeant Frog and Slayers.

Namco Bandai is no stranger to crossover collaborations; Namco x Capcom and the Super Robot Taisen series are proof of that. The publisher's Banpresto label recently announced yet another crossover title, only this time they're using characters from various anime series instead of characters from videogames.

Dubbed Heroes Fantasia, the action-RPG will feature characters from numerous anime series. According to a recent post on Famitsu.com, the franchises involved include Sergeant Frog, R.O.D: Read or Die, Slayers Revolution, Mai Hime, Blood+, Rune Soldier, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, s.CRY.ed, and Darker Than Black.

Battles in Heroes Fantasia are handled in turn-based fashion where players control up to four characters in a party. Taking a page from Valkyrie Profile, each character is mapped onto one of the face buttons of the PSP. To make a character attack, players will need to press one of the face buttons corresponding to that character. Players can keep attacking until the upper right gauge is reduced to zero. A party's position can also be changed on the fly, as different positions open up new character skills to use in combat.

Battle Fantasia is due out in Japan this Winter for the PSP. An English localization of the game has yet to be determined.
