Sensors, Vol. 11, Pages 8072-8084: Sensitivities of Key Parameters in the Preparation of Silver/Silver Chloride Electrodes Used in Harned Cell Measurements of pH

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

A questionnaire was completed by fourteen world leading national metrology institutes to study the influence of several variables in the preparation of Ag/AgCl electrodes on the accuracy of Harned cell measurements of pH. The performance of each institute in the last decade has been assessed based on their results in eight key comparisons, organized by the Bureau International des Poids et Measures Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance, involving the measurement of pH of phosphate, phthalate, carbonate, borate and tetroxalate buffer solutions. The performance of each laboratory has been correlated to the results of the questionnaire to determine the critical parameters in the preparation of Ag/AgCl electrodes and their sensitivities with respect to the accuracy of pH measurement. This study reveals that the parameters most closely correlated to performance in comparisons are area of electrode wire exposed to the electrolyte, diameter and porosity of the Ag sphere prior to anodisation, amount of Ag converted to AgCl during anodisation, stability times employed for electrodes to reach equilibrium in solution prior to measurement, electrode rejection criteria employed and purity of reagents.

Sensors, Vol. 11, Pages 8060-8071: A Microring Resonator Based Negative Permeability Metamaterial Sensor

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Metamaterials are artificial multifunctional materials that acquire their material properties from their structure, rather than inheriting them directly from the materials they are composed of, and they may provide novel tools to significantly enhance the sensitivity and resolution of sensors. In this paper, we derive the dispersion relation of a cylindrical dielectric waveguide loaded on a negative permeability metamaterial (NPM) layer, and compute the resonant frequencies and electric field distribution of the corresponding Whispering-Gallery-Modes (WGMs). The theoretical resonant frequency and electric field distribution results are in good agreement with the full wave simulation results. We show that the NPM sensor based on a microring resonator possesses higher sensitivity than the traditional microring sensor since with the evanescent wave amplification and the increase of NPM layer thickness, the sensitivity will be greatly increased. This may open a door for designing sensors with specified sensitivity.

Religions, Vol. 2, Pages 358-371: Female Clergy as Agents of Religious Change?

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

This article focuses on female clergy as potential agents of change in the Church. I argue that the adoption of female clergy is one of the main factors that cause the Church to change its practices, policies and theological orientation. The first female ministers were ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland in 1988. This is fairly late compared to other Nordic countries. However, the number of female ministers and female students has been growing fast and nowadays about 70 percent of theology students are female. The paper is based on quantitative surveys conducted among the members of the Clergy Union in 2002, 2006 and 2010 (N = about 1,000 each) and among the applicants for university studies in theology in 2010. The research shows that clergywomen are changing the Church in a clearly more liberal direction. They do it in various areas of church life: they change the perception of faith and dogma, the policies of the Church as well as daily practices in parishes. Clergymen are notably more traditional in their orientation, even young clergymen. Therefore it is especially the female clergy who serve as agents of religious change in the Church.

Zelda: Skyward Sword Euro release date confirms Christmas will come early this year (The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword)

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

We've known for a while now that The legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is scheduled for release in Q4 this year. So we expeced some point in December, sufficiently early to secure massive Christmas sales, but long enough away that we'd be in perpetual yearning for what would feel like forever. Turns out we were wrong. Nintendo's taken the opportunity of Gamescom to unveil the official European release date and it's pleasantly surprising...

Crystals, Vol. 1, Pages 145-162: Ternary Compounds in the Sn-Rich Section of the Ba–Ga–Sn System: Ba8Ga16–xSn30+x (1.1 ≤ x ≤ 2.8) Clathrates of Type-I and Type-VIII, and BaGa2–xSn4+x (x ≈ 0.2) with a Clathrate-like Structure

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Systematic syntheses in the Ba–Ga–Sn system confirmed the existence of a new ternary phase BaGa1.79Sn4.21(2) (EuGa2Ge4 structure type; orthorhombic space group Cmcm, Pearson symbol oS28) with lattice parameters a = 4.5383(6) Å, b = 12.2486(16) Å, c = 14.3747(19) Å. The structure is best viewed as an open-framework based on tetrahedrally coordinated Sn/Ga atoms with Ba atoms enclosed in the voids within it. The new phase co-precipitates with two other compounds with very similar compositions—Ba8Ga14.5Sn31.5(4) (K4Si23 structure type; cubic space group , Pearson symbol cP54; a = 11.6800(12) Å), and Ba8Ga13.2Sn32.8(3), (Eu4Ga8Ge15 structure type; cubic space group , Pearson symbol cI54; a = 11.5843(7) Å). Detailed discussion on how syntheses affect the crystal chemistry, and the temperature dependence of the atomic displacement parameters, obtained from single-crystal structure refinements, are also reported in this article.

Molecules, Vol. 16, Pages 7058-7068: Simple and Rapid Method for the Determination of Uric Acid-Independent Antioxidant Capacity

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Determination of the relative contribution of uric acid level increases to the total measured antioxidative activity could be very useful for testing antioxidative products and their effect on human health. The aim of this report is to present a simple spectrophotometric method that combines the measurement of total antioxidative capacity of a sample by ferric reducing/antioxidative power (FRAP) assay, with the uricase-reaction (specific elimination of uric acid), in order to establish and correct for the contribution of uric acid in FRAP values. We measured FRAP values, with (uric acid-independent antioxidant capacity, TAC-UA) and without (total antioxidant capacity, TAC) uricase treatment, and expressed it as μmol/L of uric acid equivalents. In such way, it was possible to determine both total and uric acid-independent antioxidant capacity, plasma uric acid (UA, as the difference between TAC and TAC-UA), and the ratio of the uric acid in total antioxidant capacity (UA/TAC).

Molecules, Vol. 16, Pages 7043-7057: Development of a Highly Sensitive and Specific Immunoassay for Determining Chrysoidine, A Banned Dye, in Soybean Milk Film

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

A highly specific and sensitive indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (icELISA)was developed for the first time for the detection of chrysoidine, a dye banned in soybean milk film. Two haptens with different spacer arms were synthesized to produce antibodies. Both homologous and heterologous immunoassay formats were compared to enhance the icELISA sensitivity. The heterologous icELISA exhibited better performance, with an IC50 (50% inhibitory concentration) of 0.33 ng/mL, a limit of detection (LOD, 10% inhibitory concentration) of 0.04 ng/mL, and a limit of quantitation (LOQ, 20%–80% inhibitory concentration) from 0.09 to 4.9 ng/mL. The developed icELISA was high sensitive and specific, and was applied to determine chrysoidine in fortified soybean milk film samples. The results were in good agreement with that obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses.

Pharmaceuticals, Vol. 4, Pages 1158-1170: Synthesis and Biological Screening of 4-Benzyl-2H-phthalazine Derivatives

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Preparation of 4-benzyl-2-substituted phthalazin-1-one derivatives 2-8 is reported. Condensation of 4-benzyl-1-chlorophthalazine (9) with a series of different nucleophiles gave 4-benzylphthalazin-1-ylamino derivatives (10-13 and 16) and 4-amino-2-[N'-(4-benzylphthalazin-1-yl)-hydrazino]-6-arylpyrimidine-5-carbonitriles (14a,b). Interaction of 9 with ambident anions was also studied. 5-Benzyl-6,6a,12-triazobenzo[a]-anthracen-7-one (15) is obtained from 9 and anthranilic acid derivatives. Treatment of 16 with (EtO)3CH/Ac2O under reflux afforded the corresponding ethoxymethylene derivative 17, while aqueous ammonium hydroxide treatment afforded carboxamide derivative 18. The structures of the newly synthesized derivatives were confirmed by their elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral studies. Antimicrobial activities of some selected compounds were also studied and some of these were found to exhibit promising effects against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi.

Rayman Origins hands-on preview (Rayman Origins)

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Normally, when a bunch of jaded games journalists get together to preview an upcoming game, most of the noise in the room comes from the game itself. Within minutes of being let loose on the Gamescom demo of Rayman Origins, however, we heard something we hadn't heard in years, at least not in a professional context: a lot of laughter and shouting, all of it coming from the supposedly world-weary writers at the controls. Clearly, this merited further investigation...

Entropy, Vol. 13, Pages 1518-1532: A Risk Profile for Information Fusion Algorithms

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

E.T. Jaynes, originator of the maximum entropy interpretation of statistical mechanics, emphasized that there is an inevitable trade-off between the conflicting requirements of robustness and accuracy for any inferencing algorithm. This is because robustness requires discarding of information in order to reduce the sensitivity to outliers. The principal of nonlinear statistical coupling, which is an interpretation of the Tsallis entropy generalization, can be used to quantify this trade-off. The coupled-surprisal, -lnκ(p)≡-(pκ-1)/κ , is a generalization of Shannon surprisal or the logarithmic scoring rule, given a forecast p of a true event by an inferencing algorithm. The coupling parameter κ=1-q, where q is the Tsallis entropy index, is the degree of nonlinear coupling between statistical states. Positive (negative) values of nonlinear coupling decrease (increase) the surprisal information metric and thereby biases the risk in favor of decisive (robust) algorithms relative to the Shannon surprisal (κ=0). We show that translating the average coupled-surprisal to an effective probability is equivalent to using the generalized mean of the true event probabilities as a scoring rule. The metric is used to assess the robustness, accuracy, and decisiveness of a fusion algorithm. We use a two-parameter fusion algorithm to combine input probabilities from N sources. The generalized mean parameter 'alpha' varies the degree of smoothing and raising to a power Νβ with β between 0 and 1 provides a model of correlation.

OmniGraphSketcher 1.2 - Create elegant and precise graphs easily.. (Shareware)

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 08:59 PM PDT

OmniGraphSketcher (formerly Graph Sketcher) helps you make elegant and precise graphs in seconds, simply by sketching what you want. Specifically designed for reports, presentations, and problem sets where you need to produce sharp-looking graphs on the fly, OmniGraphSketcher combines the data plotting power of charting applications with the ease of a basic drawing program.

Add as many lines as you like to represent goals, cutoffs, or other boundaries. Shade in areas, connect and align objects, and add labels anywhere on the graph as you go. Enter data visually with a click of the mouse, and if your data is already in a spreadsheet or database program, just copy and paste it right into OmniGraphSketcher.

OmniGraphSketcher has an intuitive and simple interface so that you can quickly find what you want, while behind-the-scenes algorithms take care of all the details. It's an ideal solution for anyone who needs to make plots and graphs without the hassle of using a complicated data visualization program.

Version 1.2 (rc1):
  • You can now override the automatic scientific notation settings individually for each axis. The controls are in pop-up menus on the axis inspector (indicated by small triangles next to the tick label buttons).
  • Decreased tick label spacing on axes with negative numbers and certain logarithmic ranges.
  • Copy as Image now puts a PNG image on the pasteboard along with the PDF and TIFF formats (to help out applications that don't handle PDFs well).
  • Fixed an issue where entering a huge number (more than 10300) as the axis minimum would spawn error dialogs.
  • Fixed a regression where the data inspector did not interpret decimal points according to the number formats specified in System Preferences.
Changes from OmniGraphSketcher 1.1.4
  • Logarithmic Axes
    • Lin-Log and Log-Log: OmniGraphSketcher now supports logarithmic scales on either or both axes. You can easily switch between linear and logarithmic axes using new controls in the Axes Inspector. Dragging, nudging, snapping, sketch recognition, axis manipulation, importing, exporting, scale-to-fit, etc. have all been updated to work as you'd expect.
    • Double precision: To accommodate data sets that span many orders of magnitude, axes and data points now support up to 13 significant digits, and they can hold values as large as 10300.
    • Flexible: OmniGraphSketcher's logarithmic axes support any range of values (they do not need to begin and end at powers of 10). The only exception is that the number zero is mathematically impossible on a logarithmic scale, so the min/max values must be both more than zero or both less than zero. OmniGraphSketcher will automatically fix any such issues when switching to a logarithmic axis and will prevent you from accidentally setting parameters that are mathematically undefined.
    • Scientific notation: To accommodate these large numbers, both linear and logarithmic axes now automatically use scientific notation ("1.23 x 1045") when values are larger than 10,000,000 or smaller than 0.001. On logarithmic scales, simplified powers of ten are used when possible ("109"). You can edit these values or enter new data points by using the shortened "E" notation: "1.23E45" or "6E-7".
    • Line interpolation: Lines in OmniGraphSketcher connect two or more data points as smoothly as possible. That means when you switch between linear and logarithmic scales, intermediate points on the line do not necessarily represent the same values. To accurately maintain the shape of a line, choose: Arrange > Interpolate Line. This will sample along the vertical grid lines (x-values). All of those samples will maintain their position, allowing you to see how each part of the shape adjusts between linear and logarithmic space. For example, an interpolated straight line in linear space becomes an exponential curve in logarithmic space.
  • Tick Labels
    • Scientific notation: Both linear and logarithmic axes now automatically use scientific notation ("1.23 x 1045") when values get very large or very small. On logarithmic scales, simplified powers of ten are used when possible ("109"). You can edit these values or enter new data points by using the shortened "E" notation: "1.23E45" or "6E-7". You can override the automatic scientific notation settings individually for each axis by using the new pop-up menus on the Axis Inspector (click the small triangles next to the tick label buttons).
    • Smarter label spacing: When there is not enough room to label every tick mark, tick labels are now always evenly spaced (skipping tick marks in multiples of two, five, or ten). On logarithmic axes, tick marks representing powers of ten are most likely to be labeled. The whitespace required between labels varies depending on whether the axis is using negative numbers, decimals, or scientific notation.
    • Major/minor tick marks: Where there are at least 5 tick marks between tick labels, OmniGraphSketcher now automatically uses longer and shorter tick marks to distinguish between labeled ticks (long) and unlabeled ticks (short). Thanks to these improvements, automatic tick spacing is now 1 in more cases, allowing more easily understandable scales.
    • Significant digits: Tick labels (and everything else in the app that displays numeric data values) now choose an appropriate number of significant digits based on the axis ranges. For example, an axis spanning 0 to 100 will display up to four significant digits ("1.234" or "93.47"); whereas an axis spanning 842 to 843 will use up to six significant digits ("842.551"). This is just for display; all data points are stored with full precision. You can see the full precision values in the Data Inspector.
  • Miscellaneous
    • New menu option: Arrange > Add Jitter (cmd-shift-J) applies a small amount of random vertical noise to the selected data points, using a standard normal distribution. This can be useful for making data points visible that might be hidden behind each other. Apply it multiple times to increase the amount of jitter.
    • Data importing and the Scale to Fit command now choose better automatic axis ranges.
    • Tick label distance and axis title distance are now recorded as part of the "Make Current Styles Default" command.
    • Automatic margins now take into account any arrowheads on the ends of axes.
    • Lines with straight segments at sharp angles now have gentler, rounded joints.
    • Grid lines now adjust to the nearest pixel so that they look sharper on-screen.
    • Improved the graphics on the axis inspector.
    • The custom tick spacing field in the axis inspector now behaves as expected when you tab through it without changing its value.
    • Copy as Image now puts a PNG image on the pasteboard along with the PDF and TIFF formats (to help out applications that don't handle PDFs well).
    • Fixed an issue where the version number in the About OmniGraphSketcher panel was sometimes in the wrong place.
    • Fixed several issues that could occasionally lead to crashes when reverting, closing, or switching between documents.
    • Smaller fixes and improvements.
