This week, I gave the keynote address at the ACM SIGGRAPH conference in Vancouver, BC. The event's organizers were kind enough to record and release my video to their YouTube channel. My talk was about the way that copyright can be made to work for creators in the digital age, and why it's important for everyone that we don't get it wrong.

Big in Japan August 1-7: Kirby Mass Attack

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 02:24 AM PDT

Kirby's new portable exploits just below Sega's new soccer title; 3DS now at fifth place in latest Japanese sales chart.

Japanese gamers love soccer, puffballs, and exaggerated takes on iron chefs, if the latest Media Creates chart for Japan are anything to go by. Last week saw the debut of J-League Pro Soccer Club o Tsukurou! 7 Euro Plus and Kirby Mass Attack. According to the update on the week of August 1 to 7, the Sega-published soccer game for the PSP sold 101,022 units and is at first place.

Just below the soccer game is HAL Laboratory's new Kirby game on the DS. Titled Kirby Mass Attack, the game made its debut in second place with 74,915 units sold. Nintendo describes the latest title as a "side-scrolling real-time strategy" game as players use a stylus onto the DS' touch-screen to guide multiple clones of Kirby to go from point A to point B, navigating through pitfalls and solving puzzles that obstruct their path. Fans of the puffball can check out the game in English on September 19. For more information, check out GameSpot's recent preview of the game.

Sitting at third place is Toriko: Gourmet Survival! for the PSP with 62,882 units sold. The action title is based on the current hit manga that started in 2008. The series premise is about a man named Toriko who hunts down rare animals using his martial art skills and cooks them for dinner.

Other notable software releases include the debut of last year's Epic Mickey in Japan, now under the moniker "Disney Epic Mickey: Mickey Mouse and the Magic Brush". The 3D platformer designed by Warren Spector sold 27,257 and is seated at sixth place. Yuji Naka's latest title from Prope Studio, Family Fishing, is just below Epic Mickey with 22,365 units sold. Last week's former number one title Rhythm Heaven dropped to fourth place with 62,597 units sold, while former number two title Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos for the PSP dropped to 13th place with 12,445 units sold.

Speaking of the Wii, the system is now in third place just below Sony's two console representatives. The Wii sold 17,004 units on the week, while the PSP and PS3 sold 35,619 and 18,338 units respectively. The 3DS dropped to fifth place with 4,132 units sold.

IJERPH, Vol. 8, Pages 3287-3298: Perceived Stress Scale: Reliability and Validity Study in Greece

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Objective: To translate the Perceived Stress Scale (versions PSS-4, -10 and -14) and to assess its psychometric properties in a sample of general Greek population. Methods: 941 individuals completed anonymously questionnaires comprising of PSS, the Depression Anxiety and Stress scale (DASS-21 version), and a list of stress-related symptoms. Psychometric properties of PSS were investigated by confirmatory factor analysis (construct validity), Cronbach's alpha (reliability), and by investigating relations with the DASS-21 scores and the number of symptoms, across individuals' characteristics. The two-factor structure of PSS-10 and PSS-14 was confirmed in our analysis. We found satisfactory Cronbach's alpha values (0.82 for the full scale) for PSS-14 and PSS-10 and marginal satisfactory values for PSS-4 (0.69). PSS score exhibited high correlation coefficients with DASS-21 subscales scores, meaning stress (r = 0.64), depression (r = 0.61), and anxiety (r = 0.54). Women reported significantly more stress compared to men and divorced or widows compared to married or singled only. A strong significant (p < 0.001) positive correlation between the stress score and the number of self-reported symptoms was also noted. Conclusions: The Greek versions of the PSS-14 and PSS-10 exhibited satisfactory psychometric properties and their use for research and health care practice is warranted.

Religions, Vol. 2, Pages 345-357: Measuring Religiosity/Spirituality: Theoretical Differentiations and Categorization of Instruments

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

There is a multitude of instruments for measuring religiosity/spirituality. Many of these questionnaires are used or even were developed in the context of studies about the connection between religiosity/spirituality and health. Thus, it seems crucial to note that measures can focus on quite different components along a hypothetical path between stressors and health. We present an instructive model which helps to identify these different components and allows the categorization of instruments of religiosity/spirituality according to their primary measurement intention: intensity/centrality, resources, needs, coping, and quality of life/well-being. Furthermore, we point out possibilities as to how religiosity and spirituality can be differentiated. We argue that the distinction between religiosity and spirituality is important in countries with a more secular background where a growing number of people identify themselves as "spiritual, but not religious".

Gap’s Death-Camp Chic mannequins

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 02:03 AM PDT

My intrepid wife snapped this pic in a Gap store in London, where a dangerously emaciated mannequin was showing off the frankly named "Always Skinny" line. I'm wondering what the internal project name for this was at Gap HQ: "Death-camp chic"? "Ana Pride"? "Famine fashion forward"? In any event, you're apparently not supposed to purvey the secret nature of Gap's starving clothing displays outside of the shop, as a clerk gave my wife a savage ticking-off for snapping this shot.

Sensors, Vol. 11, Pages 7851-7864: Design and Control of a Ferromagnetic Coded Micro-Carrier Biochip Sensor for Multiplex Detection of Antibodies

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

This paper describes a method for producing a novel type of ferromagnetic coded micro-carrier. The ferromagnetic coded micro-carriers are about 200 μm in length, 200 μm in width and 50 μm in thickness, and contain eight code elements with two distinguishable codes (hollow and solid), allowing for 28 unique codes. The code shapes include rectangle, circle, etc. Differently shaped coded micro-carriers could carry different antigens for detection of its complementary antibody. These many shapes of coded micro-carriers would be used simultaneously allowing us to make multiple detections for different antibodies at the same time. A molding process is applied for fabrication of the ferromagnetically coded micro-carriers where Fe material (Fe powder mixed with binder) is shaped in many tiny molds to produce the coded shapes used for identification of the bio-molecules. Magnetic force is used to control the movement and location of the ferromagnetic coded micro-carriers to prevent the loss during the hybridization process. The results of image process and analysis system testing are satisfactory. The results of our micro-carrier detection system for two sets of R and B color analysis are proportional to those obtained from ELISA antibody detection.

Polymers, Vol. 3, Pages 1268-1281: Defensins: Potential Effectors in Autoimmune Rheumatic Disorders

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Defensins are small cationic peptides with antimicrobial properties. They constitute a highly conserved innate immune defense mechanism across species. Based on the arrangement of disulfide-bonds, α- and β-defensins are distinguished in humans. Both types of defensin comprise several distinct molecules that are preferentially expressed at epithelial surfaces and in blood cells. In the last decade, multiple immunomodulatory functions of defensins have been recognized, including chemotactic activity, the promotion of antigen presentation, and modulations of proinflammatory cytokine secretion. These findings suggested a role for defensins not only as a first line of defense, but also as connectors of innate and adaptive immune responses. Recently, increasingly accumulating evidence has indicated that defensins may also be involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune rheumatic disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. The current review summarizes the data connecting defensins to autoimmunity.

The Hit List 1.0.6 - Forget what you need to do with confidence.. (Shareware)

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:59 PM PDT

The Hit List manages the daily chaos of your modern life. It's easy to learn - it's as easy as making lists. And it's powerful enough to let you plan, then forget, then act when the time is right.

Your life is complicated enough as it is. The tool to manage your life shouldn't be. The Hit List keeps things simple by not forcing you to learn a system. It can be as simple as just keeping a list of things to do as you would on a piece of paper. However, if you do have a task management system such as Getting Things Done by David Allen, The Hit List is flexible enough to support you.

Forget what you need to do. With confidence.

BitTorrent is a protocol for distributing files. It identifies content by URL and is designed to integrate seamlessly with the web. Its advantage over plain HTTP is that when multiple downloads of the same file happen concurrently, the downloaders upload to each other, making it possible for the file source to support very large numbers of downloaders with only a modest increase in its load.

Version 7.0.2:
  • Fixed startup crash
  • Fixed bug in preferences panel

Paperless 2.1.1 - Digital documents manager.. (Demo)

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:59 PM PDT

Paperless is a digital documents manager. Remember when everyone talked about how we would soon be a paperless society? Now it seems like we use paper more than ever. Let's face it - we need and we use paper. But Paperless 2 is one of those incredibly useful applications that will help you manage all your paper and digital documents and at the same time positively affect the environment.

When it's tax time no more bringing a shoebox full of receipts to your accountant. According to ruling Rev. Proc. 97-22 from the IRS, a digital document is acceptable. With Paperless 2 you can create a Smart Collection and keep all your documents neat and tidy and in one place. Additionally, once you store your receipts in Paperless 2, you can select the receipts to email, print, or export to PDF, or even show as a chart.

Paperless 2 has the ability to keep up and maintain the task of not only reducing your need for paper but managing the paper you use. Simply scan your receipts, bills, statements, warranty cards, business cards - any paper document and the OCR function of Paperless 2 recognizes the data and adds it to the Details Window. The built-in search functionality even lets you find and organize receipts and documents into Smart Collections. Already have your documents as PDFs or other file formats? No problem. Simply drag and drop them into Paperless 2. By taking your paper receipts, product manuals and other documents and creating an electronic record you've already reduced your need for paper.

Now, doesn't that feel good?

Version 2.1.1:

  • Resolved an issue while Paperless might crash if library window is closed while attempting to write information to the library file.
  • Resolved an issue where Paperless might crash while generating a report if a PDF has become dissociated from the corresponding library item.
  • Restored automatic ScanSnap configuration under Mac OS X 10.7.
  • Resolved an issue where OCR did not run under Mac OS X 10.7.
  • Resolved an issue where autofill pulled information from an incorrect location.

  • Enabled autofill to the Tax field.
  • Removed scrollbars from the continuum display (top pane) in CoverFlow view.
  • Resolved an issue where Paperless would not quit if a read-only library was open.
  • Added to the "Productivity" category, so that Paperless now sorts to the Productivity category under Mac OS X 10.7.

  • Mac OS X 10.6 or later recommended to take advantage of all features
  • Fujitsu ScanSnap Scanner is preferred although Image Capture compatible scanners are preferred over TWAIN scanners. TWAIN scanners are supported but not recommended

Yasu 2.7.5 - System maintenance app performs many tasks.. (Shareware)

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:59 PM PDT

Yasu was originally created with System Administrators who service large groups of workstations in mind, Yasu (Yet Another System Utility) was made to do a specific group of maintenance tasks quickly within a few clicks, rather than needing to endlessly type shell script commands in the Terminal application.

Yasu allows system administrators, as well as the average user, to conveniently run various system level Unix shell scripts in order to perform maintenance routines and clear the many cache files used by OS X. Yasu was designed to be a simple, first line of attack for a workstation that has started "acting up." More often than not, a thorough purge of the cache files of a Mac will bring its behavior back into line.

Version 2.7.5:
  • Fixed a bug introduced in the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion release that prevented the app from quitting when the main window was closed.

Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
