Religions, Vol. 2, Pages 372-388: Schools and Communities of Norm-awareness Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT The relationship between religiosity and educational attainment is an important question in the sociology of religion literature. It is widely contested whether the natural outgrowth of the spreading rational worldview and the increase of educated people can account for the decline of religious adherence. Is there any other explanation for the different opportunities of religious and non-religious societal groups to obtaining the highest educational level? After the political transformation in Central and Eastern Europe, one of the most important challenges of restructuring the educational system was how different cultural groups would be able to infuse their own spirituality into their children's education after the domination of the totalitarian ideology. The Hungarian case is unique because of the mixed confessional landscape, the populous Hungarian minority outside the border, the alternating hard and soft periods of religious harassment. Recently, more than half of the Hungarian population can be described as religious in their own way, one sixth strongly affiliated with churches, and another sixth are atheists. However, several studies showed that basic indicators of social status were very strongly and negatively interrelated with religiosity. It turned out that preferred educational views, values, approaches and priorities regarding the norms at schools differ very sharply according to the religious views, and belonging to a religious network significantly supports educational careers. This paper is a comprehensive review of research on the educational functions of denominational schools and religious communities in contemporary Hungary. |
IJMS, Vol. 12, Pages 5373-5389: p66Shc Aging Protein in Control of Fibroblasts Cell Fate Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are wieldy accepted as one of the main factors of the aging process. These highly reactive compounds modify nucleic acids, proteins and lipids and affect the functionality of mitochondria in the first case and ultimately of the cell. Any agent or genetic modification that affects ROS production and detoxification can be expected to influence longevity. On the other hand, genetic manipulations leading to increased longevity can be expected to involve cellular changes that affect ROS metabolism. The 66-kDa isoform of the growth factor adaptor Shc (p66Shc) has been recognized as a relevant factor to the oxygen radical theory of aging. The most recent data indicate that p66Shc protein regulates life span in mammals and its phosphorylation on serine 36 is important for the initiation of cell death upon oxidative stress. Moreover, there is strong evidence that apart from aging, p66Shc may be implicated in many oxidative stress-associated pathologies, such as diabetes, mitochondrial and neurodegenerative disorders and tumorigenesis. This article summarizes recent knowledge about the role of p66Shc in aging and senescence and how this protein can influence ROS production and detoxification, focusing on studies performed on skin and skin fibroblasts. |
Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT Liquid crystals have attracted enormous interest because of the variety of their phases and richness of their application. The interplay of general physical symmetries and specific molecular features generates a myriad of different phenomena. A surprising behavior of liquid crystals is the reentrancy of phases as temperature, pressure, or concentration are varied. Here, we review the main experimental facts and the different theoretical scenarios that have guided the understanding of bulk reentrant nematics. Recently, some computer simulations of a system confined to nanoscopic scales have found new dynamical features of the reentrant nematic phase. We discuss this prediction in relation with the available experimental evidence on reentrant nematics and with the dynamics of liquids in strongly confined environments. |
Toxins, Vol. 3, Pages 1038-1064: Modes of Action of Microbially-Produced Phytotoxins Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT Some of the most potent phytotoxins are synthesized by microbes. A few of these share molecular target sites with some synthetic herbicides, but many microbial toxins have unique target sites with potential for exploitation by the herbicide industry. Compounds from both non-pathogenic and pathogenic microbes are discussed. Microbial phytotoxins with modes of action the same as those of commercial herbicides and those with novel modes of action of action are covered. Examples of the compounds discussed are tentoxin, AAL-toxin, auscaulitoxin aglycone, hydantocidin, thaxtomin, and tabtoxin. |

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT I am pleased to introduce Biomolecules, a new journal to report on all aspects of science that focuses on biologically derived substances, from small molecules to complex polymers. Some examples are lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, hormones, amino acids, nucleotides, peptides, RNA and polysaccharides, but this list is far from exhaustive. Research on biomolecules encompasses multiple fascinating questions. How are biomolecules synthesized and modified? What are their structures and interactions with other biomolecules? How do biomolecules function in biological processes, at the level of organelles, cells, organs, organisms, or even ecosystems? How do biomolecules affect either the organism that produces them or other organisms of the same or different species? How are biomolecules shaped by evolution, and how in turn do they affect cellular phenotypes? What is the systems-level contribution of biomolecules to biological function? |

Metro: Last Light Updated Preview Posted: 21 Aug 2011 09:21 PM PDT We smash some light bulbs, cut off heads, and add an extra dimension in our latest look at this future shooter.
"The flawed masterpiece" is a term that THQ has used on more than one occasion when referring to 2010's Metro 2033. Loved by fans of the gritty post-apocalyptic genre, the title's critical reception was hampered by a handful of design quirks and technical foibles, such as inconsistent AI. Determined to improve on some of the shortcomings of the original, European developer A4 Games is trying its hand once more with Metro: Last Light, a direct sequel to Metro 2033. We recently got a second look at the demo shown during E3, and while the content hasn't evolved beyond the tightly scripted sequence that wowed show goers in June, we took the time to slow down the pace and smell the decaying roses. Our first lap was at full pace, verbosely butchering anything stupid enough to stand between our bullets and our objective. The second was much stealthier, focusing on using shadows to our advantage, and drawing targets to secluded locations before putting them to sleep forever. Our third and final pass was much more free form, stopping the action and examining the game world, and the intricacies of its objects, and giving us our first glimpse at the game running in stereoscopic 3D. The scene opened with a long panning shot over the barren wastelands that form the backdrop to the game. The world was littered with aeroplane debris, framed by a slightly healthier-looking sky than we had seen previously, and sparsely occupied by mutants roaming freely. The snow was beginning to melt, but we were headed underground, entering the darkened subterranean place via giant, cement ducting. Light isn't your friend when you want to remain inconspicuous, so we quickly approached and untwisted light globes dotting the walls so that they no longer glowed, plunging the area into darkness. It was a theme continued throughout our demo, with our guide either carefully removing them by hand or shooting them out at distance with our silenced rifle. Downed soldiers wearing headlamps were just as likely to give away our position, so we quickly turned them off so as not to raise the suspicions of patrolling guardsmen.
With silence on our mind, machetes replaced bullets as we watched the paths of enemy soldiers, and sidled up behind them before plunging our blade into their skulls. It was when the gunfire died down and the rooms were quiet and bloody that the attention to detail present in Last Light made itself clear. Accuracy permeates the game world, and where corners could have feasibly been cut, like using flat images for non-interactive objects such as pipes and switchboards, the team has gone the extra mile by creating fully 3D objects in excruciating replica. This is a salvaged future, and, as a result, the cobbled-together technology is rooted in reality. Cogs grip and spin and cables spool in real time, whilst digging a layer below the destructible environments exposes the materials underneath that are providing structural integrity, such as mesh and rebar. Although the demo that we saw was a fraction of a level, and is still very much in the pre-alpha stage of development, we were most struck by its complete lack of HUD. No final decisions have been made, but the design team is working hard on the possibility of taking essential elements off the screen, or using replacement indicators, such as visible ammunition clips, as round counters; or audio cues, such as the difference between metal pings on armour and thuds of bullets colliding with flesh, to indicate what you're hitting. It's ambitious, and a natural follow-on to Metro 2033's oxygen supply indicator watch system, but it will require significantly less hand-holding than exists in other shooters available. We welcome the change, and it's a brave step that we're hoping does make it to market.
Currently, there are only plans for the PC version of Last Light to support stereoscopic 3D, courtesy of a partnership with Nvidia, but THQ reps did allude to the fact that if the community wants it, there is a possibility of the mode being brought to the game's console versions. 3D looked stunning, with the scene moving slowly, each weapon showed distinct personalities in the gouges and scratches on the metal, while the subtle depth-of-field change when the iron sights were brought up were anything but gimmicky. Unfortunately, as tends to be the case with the technology, when the scene got frantic, and speedy actions like weapon reloads or fast-paced action sequences occurred, the fine detail showcased in 3D that made the game so beautiful and immersive was lost, turning it into more of a blur. 3D visuals are an inherently personal experience, so your mileage may vary; but, from what we saw, we're hoping to see it tightened up before it ships. The game is not due to ship until sometime in 2012 on the PC, Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and the Wii U, but from our latest taste, we're hoping to see more on Metro: Last Light soon.
