JFB, Vol. 2, Pages 195-212: Computational Study of pH-sensitive Hydrogel-based Microfluidic Flow Controllers

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

This computational study investigates the sensing and actuating behavior of a pH-sensitive hydrogel-based microfluidic flow controller. This hydrogel-based flow controller has inherent advantage in its unique stimuli-sensitive properties, removing the need for an external power supply. The predicted swelling behavior the hydrogel is validated with steady-state and transient experiments. We then demonstrate how the model is implemented to study the sensing and actuating behavior of hydrogels for different microfluidic flow channel/hydrogel configurations: e.g., for flow in a T-junction with single and multiple hydrogels. In short, the results suggest that the response of the hydrogel-based flow controller is slow. Therefore, two strategies to improve the response rate of the hydrogels are proposed and demonstrated. Finally, we highlight that the model can be extended to include other stimuli-responsive hydrogels such as thermo-, electric-, and glucose-sensitive hydrogels.

Polymers, Vol. 3, Pages 1363-1376: Influence of the Hydrophobicity of Polyelectrolytes on Polyelectrolyte Complex Formation and Complex Particle Structure and Shape

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) were prepared by structural uniform and strongly charged cationic and anionic modified alternating maleic anhydride copolymers. The hydrophobicity of the polyelectrolytes was changed by the comonomers (ethylene, isobutylene and styrene). Additionally, the n−/n+ ratio of the molar charges of the polyelectrolytes and the procedure of formation were varied. The colloidal stability of the systems and the size, shape, and structure of the PEC particles were investigated by turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Dynamic light scattering indicates that beside large PEC particle aggregates distinct smaller particles were formed by the copolymers which have the highest hydrophobicity (styrene). These findings could be proved by AFM. Fractal dimension (D), root mean square (RMS) roughness and the surface profiles of the PEC particles adsorbed on mica allow the following conclusions: the higher the hydrophobicity of the polyelectrolytes, the broader is the particle size distribution and the minor is the swelling of the PEC particles. Hence, the most compact particles are formed with the very hydrophobic copolymer.

Religions, Vol. 2, Pages 398-409: Being Diagnosed with HIV as a Trigger for Spiritual Transformation

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

How can the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS result in a positive spiritual transformation (ST)? The purpose of this sub-study is to identify special features of the experiences of individuals in whom HIV/AIDS diagnosis triggered a positive ST. We found ST triggered by HIV/AIDS to develop gradually, with a key adaptation phase after diagnosis in which the patient develops an individualized spirituality. Most participants (92%) expressed having an individual connection to a higher presence/entity. Most (92%) also described themselves as feeling more spiritual than religious (p < 0.001). Religious professionals did not play a key role in fostering ST. Despite experiencing stigma by virtue of certain religious views, participants accepted themselves, which supported the process that we called "the triad of care taking". This triad started with self-destructive behavior (92%), such as substance use and risky sex, then transformed to developing self-care after diagnosis (adaptation) and gradually expanded in some (62%) to compassionate care for others during ST. Spirituality did not trigger the adaption phase immediately after diagnosis, but contributed to long-lasting lifestyle changes. Overcoming self-reported depression, (92% before diagnosis and in 8% after ST) was a common feature. After the adaption phase, none of the participants blamed themselves, others or God for their HIV+ status. The prevailing view, rather, was that "God made them aware". Our results suggest that it may be important to find ways to support people with HIV in feeling connected to a higher presence/entity, since this leads not only to a deeper connection with a higher presence/entity, but also to a deeper connection with oneself and to more responsible and caring behavior.

Forests, Vol. 2, Pages 707-729: Spatial Simulation Modelling of Future Forest Cover Change Scenarios in Luangprabang Province, Lao PDR

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Taking Luangprabang province in Lao Peoples's Democratic Republic (PDR) as an example, we simulated future forest cover changes under the business-as-usual (BAU), pessimistic and optimistic scenarios based on the Markov-cellular automata (MCA) model. We computed transition probabilities from satellite-derived forest cover maps (1993 and 2000) using the Markov chains, while the "weights of evidence" technique was used to generate transition potential maps. The initial forest cover map (1993), the transition potential maps and the 1993–2000 transition probabilities were used to calibrate the model. Forest cover simulations were then performed from 1993 to 2007 at an annual time-step. The simulated forest cover map for 2007 was compared to the observed (actual) forest cover map for 2007 in order to test the accuracy of the model. Following the successful calibration and validation, future forest cover changes were simulated up to 2014 under different scenarios. The MCA simulations under the BAU and pessimistic scenarios projected that current forest areas would decrease, whereas unstocked forest areas would increase in the future. Conversely, the optimistic scenario projected that current forest areas would increase in the future if strict forestry laws enforcing conservation in protected forest areas are implemented. The three simulation scenarios provide a very good case study for simulating future forest cover changes at the subnational level (Luangprabang province). Thus, the future simulated forest cover changes can possibly be used as a guideline to set reference scenarios as well as undertake REDD/REDD+ preparedness activities within the study area.

Religions, Vol. 2, Pages 389-397: Women Priests in the Church of England: Psychological Type Profile

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

This study employed psychological type theory and measurement to explore the psychological profile of women priests ordained in the Church of England. A sample of 83 Anglican clergywomen in England completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The data demonstrated clear preferences for introversion (63%) over extraversion (37%), for intuition (60%) over sensing (40%), for feeling (76%) over thinking (24%), and for judging (55%) over perceiving (45%). In terms of dominant types, 37% were dominant feelers, 31% dominant intuitives, 23% dominant sensers, and 8% dominant thinkers. These findings are discussed to illuminate the preferred ministry styles of Anglican clergywomen in England and to highlight the significant differences between the psychological type profile of clergywomen and the UK female population norms.

Gundam EXTREME Vs. to invade PS3 this December

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:09 PM PDT

Port of arcade game to also be playable at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

With the popularity of the Gundam series always on a high, gamers can always expect different videogame takes on the mecha franchise. Publishers Namco Bandai recently revealed to Famitsu that the PS3 version of the arcade game Gundam EXTREME Vs. will be hitting Japan shelves on December 1. The game will retail at 8,380 yen ($109).

According to a Famitsu interview with game director Tetsuya Akatsuka and producer Yoshitaka Goto, the PS3 version will be based off the latest build of the arcade title. New features include an online network mode, practice mode to test out a mecha's moveset and the game's fighting system, and a BGM edit mode that lets fans use custom soundtracks from their PS3 consoles.

Akatsuka and Goto mentioned as well that the latest PS3 build will be playable in this year's Tokyo Game Show. In addition, Namco Bandai will be holding a Gundam Extreme VS arcade tournament at the show.

Developed by Capcom, the fighting game made its debut in the arcades last year on September 28. The game features different kinds of Gundam mechas to control from the first Mobile Suit Gundam series right down to the latest SEED entries. The game's fighting system features the Extreme Action move where players can cancel an action using an evasive maneuver like a step cancel or a dash.

Players can also use the Extreme Burst skill to boost up their Gundam mid-battle provided that their EX Burst gauge is over half full. Stay tuned for GameSpot's upcoming coverage on the PS3 version at this year's TGS.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus due for Winter 2011 in Japan

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:08 PM PDT

PS Vita port of popular 2D fighting game from Arc System Works to have new characters and modes; update also coming for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Next to the Street Fighter IV series, the BlazBlue series is also a popular choice for gamers who wish to sate their fighting game fix. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, the PS Vita version of the fighting game, titled BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus, will be out this Winter in Japan.

This port will not only keep the game's original aspect ratio and resolution thanks to the new console's specs, but will also have new scenarios for the game's story mode which may showcase stories for recently-added characters like Makoto, Valkenhyn, and Platinum. The game will also feature a network mode where players can fight each other in teams, as well as a reworked version of Abyss mode which made its debut on the PSP version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II.

The port will bring in a new character: Relius Clover. The character made his appearance in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift's story mode as Carl Clover's evil father. Like his son, Relius controls a puppet called Ignis to help fight against his opponents. In contrast to his son's fighting style, he summons his puppet manually by pressing the drive button, in which he can follow up with moves of his own. The all-new playable character recently made his debut in a BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II update location test that was held on August 11 in Akihabara. The update itself will be made available in Japanese and Asian arcades this Fall.

Famitsu also mentioned that this version of the game will be coming out for Xbox 360 and PS3. Whether this version will be sold as a retail or as DLC to complement the existing version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift has yet to be confirmed.
