PlayStation 4 will stream PlayStation 3 games - Report

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 05:35 PM PST

Cloud streaming service in the PlayStation 4 designed said to allow users to play PlayStation 3 games on the next-gen console.

The PlayStation 4 will be able to stream PlayStation 3 games over the Internet, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal.

Citing sources "familiar" with Sony's plans, the WSJ reports that "the new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet, these people said. The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs."

The WSJ adds that streaming support in the PlayStation 4 comes alongside "other enhancements to bolster its position on the market," but does not go any further into what these might be.

Two photographs of the PlayStation 4's devkit controller have surfaced recently, showing a front-facing touch screen and an integrated speaker. Another rumour has said Sony will be focusing on new play options as opposed to technical power, though one leaked specification sheet for the PlayStation 4 suggests a machine significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3.

Sony acquired streaming company Gaikai last year for $380 million, and since then the Gaikai website has teased pictures of Uncharted, Killzone, and Metal Gear Solid.

Sony today updated its website for PlayStation Meeting 2013 to show a video titled PlayStation Evolution, which could potentially be teasing a PlayStation 4 unveiling at the New York event on February 20, which will take place at 18:00 EST/15:00 PST/23:00 GMT. GameSpot will be in attendance and broadcasting the event live.

calibre 0.9.19 - Complete e-library management system. (Free)

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 08:59 PM PST

calibre is a one-stop solution to all your e-book needs. It is free, open source and cross-platform in design and works well on Linux, OS X and Windows. calibre is meant to be a complete e-library solution and thus includes library management, format conversion, news feeds to ebook conversion, as well as e-book reader sync features and an integrated e-book viewer.

Version 0.9.19:

New Features:

  • New tool: "Polish books" that allows you to perform various automated cleanup actions on EPUB and AZW3 files without doing a full conversion. Polishing books is all about putting the shine of perfection on your ebook files. You can use it to subset embedded fonts, update the metadata in the book files from the metadata in the calibre library, manipulate the book jacket, etc. More features will be added in the future. To use this tool, go to Preferences->Toolbar and add the Polish books tool to the main toolbar. Then simply select the books you want to be polished and click the Polish books button. Polishing, unlike conversion, does not change the internal structure/markup of your book, it performs only the minimal set of actions needed to achieve its goals. Note that polish books is a completely new codebase, so there may well be bugs, polishing a book backs up the original as ORIGINAL_EPUB or ORIGINAL_AZW3, unless you have turned off this feature in Preferences->Tweaks, in which case you should backup your files manually. You can also use this tool from the command line with ebook-polish.exe.

  • News download: Handle feeds that have entries with empty ids.

Fission 2.1.2 - Streamlined audio editor. (Shareware)

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 08:59 PM PST

Fission can crop and trim audio, paste in or join files, or just rapidly split one long file into many. It's streamlined for fast editing. Plus, it works without the quality loss caused by other editors, so you can get perfect quality audio even when editing MP3 and AAC files.

If you need to convert formats, Fission can do that too! You can rapidly export or batch convert files to the MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV formats.

Key Features:

  • Edit MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, and AIFF files with no quality loss
  • Quickly split a long audio file into smaller files
  • Remove unwanted content, such as commercials, from your audio file
  • Re-arrange audio in a single file, copy audio from one file to another, or merge with a quick drag and drop
  • Create great-sounding MP3 or AAC ringtones for your cell phone.

Version 2.1.2:
  • A problem some users saw with Exporting and Transcoding acting unresponsive, even as it worked, should now be gone. Fission is sorry if it seemed to be ignoring you while it worked.
  • The Start Window now remembers its state between files and launches. If you close it, it'll stay pretty well closed, and not annoy you so much. But please, don't you forget about it.
  • Fission now better remembers previously used settings for saving and exporting. Amnesia be gone!
  • Progress bars should now appear more reliably when exporting audio.
  • An issue where the Mac App Store version of Fission would fail to save to a previously-specified location is now fixed.
  • Several small issues related to re-encoding of audio have been corrected, preventing unnecessary re-encoding.
  • Fission is now better a reading in chapterized AAC files. It was already pretty great, to be sure, but now it's even better.
  • Several VoiceOver improvements have been made, with labels on previously unlabeled controls. We've still got more work to do, so watch for further updates, VoiceOver users!
  • A conflict with Many Tricks' window manager Moom, which caused the selection of split points to fail, has been handled.
  • Assorted rare crashes should now be even more rare, so rare that you might suspect they're gone entirely, which they are!
  • There are probably other improvements which we've forgotten. The best way to be sure you've got them is, of course, to update.
