UK Chart: Ni no Kuni enchants the UK as DmC drops out

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 02:46 AM PST

Hitman HD Trilogy enters at fifth and DmC: Devil May Cry drops out of the top 10.

Magical role-playing game Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has dislodged Call of Duty: Black Ops II to take top spot in this week's UK charts.

The PS3-exclusive Studio Ghibli and Level-5 collaboration -- which scored a 9.0 in its GameSpot review -- saw many retailers running out of stock over the weekend. 32% of the game's total sales came from the £74.99 RRP Wizard's Edition.

Hitman HD Trilogy, the other new release this week, came in at fifth.

FIFA 13 sticks in second, with Far Cry 3 dropping one position to fourth. The rest of the top 10 is filled out with Assassin's Creed III, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Just Dance 4, Hitman: Absolution and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Capcom and Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry slips out of the top 10 into 11th place after three weeks in the chart, with Skyrim outselling it by less than 50 copies.

This week sees the release of Dead Space 3 and Scribblenauts Unlimited, but will either be able to take the charts crown from Ni no Kuni next week?

The Top 20 UK charts for the week ending February 2:

1. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
2. FIFA 13
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
4. Far Cry 3
5. Hitman HD Trilogy

Sony's rumoured PlayStation 4 reveal event will be livestreamed

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 01:48 AM PST

Sony confirms gamers will be able to watch February 20 PlayStation Meeting event live online.

Sony's PlayStation Meeting on February 20 --where the company is inviting gamers to "see the future" and, presumably, the first glimpse of the PlayStation 4-- will be livestreamed over the Internet, Sony has confirmed to GameSpot.

More information about watching the stream live will be made available in the coming days. The PlayStation Meeting will take place in New York on February 20 at 18:00 EST/15:00 PST/23:00 GMT. GameSpot will be in attendance.

Previous rumours have said Sony and Microsoft would seek Apple-style reveals for their next-gen consoles. Apple announcements are usually private events rarely streamed in public, though the company did broadcast its most recent announcement of the iPad Mini.

The most recent PlayStation 4 rumours have said the console will, and that the controller will feature both a dedicated Share button and a PSVita-style touchpad. Last week GameSpot's Mark Walton stacked what is believed to be the PlayStation 4 components against the PC.

For more information on the future of PlayStation, check out GameSpot's coverage.

The Fungus Among Us: Facing the Infected of The Last of Us

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

Our first encounter with the Infected of The Last of Us proves to be tense and challenging.

I had the chance to play an early section of The Last of Us at a Sony event last week. I spent most of that time holding my breath.

When you first take control of Joel, the rugged protagonist of The Last of Us, he feels a lot like Nathan Drake. He controls similarly and he moves through the environment with a similar sense of momentum. If you've spent time as that earlier Naughty Dog hero, you might, in these early moments, anticipate combat that delivers the same rush of adrenaline that Uncharted's yippie-ki-yay shootouts could trigger. So many of the other hallmarks of Uncharted are present during your quiet traversal of a bombed-out, post-pandemic Boston--fantastic voice acting and facial expressions, environments so stunningly beautiful that you feel compelled to just move the camera around and take in every detail--that it's easy to expect the game to follow the same tried-and-true template where combat is concerned, too. But as you make your way across the ravaged urban landscape, the calm is interrupted by a piercing wail in the distance; it's an unsettling moment that suggests the dangers lurking in your future are eerily unfamiliar.

The wail comes from one of the Infected, a sufferer of the fungus-based disease that has all but wiped out society. Initially, these poor souls retain some awareness of their humanity, but lack the ability to control their actions. Infected who fit this description are called runners; they still look more or less human, though a pallor to their skin and other details make it clear at a glance that they are not exactly the picture of health. Individually, they don't pose much of a threat, but you don't want to attract the attention of several at once and find yourself swarmed. Because ammo is scarce and weapons like Molotovs--which you can craft from items scavenged from the environment--are so limited, taking a reckless, guns-blazin' approach is a good way to get yourself killed.

You'll spend much of your time crouched, moving silently and trying not to give away your position. Being stealthy and smart is key, but the common stealth game behavior of memorizing enemy movement patterns doesn't work here. These twitchy, miserable wretches behave unpredictably, lurching in this direction or that, so distracting them with a tossed brick or bottle before sneaking past them (or sneaking in for the kill) is a particularly handy tactic. If you can creep up behind a runner, you can strangle it to death or execute it instantly with a shiv (another tool crafted from scavenged items), and if you find yourself face-to-face with one, Joel's brawling skills and his ability to hit really hard with pipes and other heavy objects can usually keep you alive.

But it's not just the runners you need to worry about. Eventually, the infection progresses to a more advanced and more disturbing stage, at which point the fungus visibly grows out from the once-human's eye sockets and covers much of the face. These Infected are known as clickers, and though they are blind, they can still hunt you down. The clicks they make don't just serve to send shivers up your spine; they enable the clickers, through echolocation, to "see," and if one locates you, you're in serious danger. Clickers are far stronger than runners, and in a fight with one, Joel's fists will not save him. Clickers are less numerous than runners, but just one clicker in a group is enough to make you think much more carefully about how to handle the situation. I repeatedly fell into the trap of letting myself get distracted by a runner or two, which enabled a clicker to charge up to me from behind; no sooner did it have its hands on me than its teeth were buried in my neck. In order to survive when clickers are present, staying aware of your surroundings and the locations of those clickers is essential.

Luckily, Joel has a gift for situational awareness; by sitting still and listening carefully, he can sense the locations of nearby Infected, who remain visible (even through walls) until you slip out of "listen mode" and start moving again. But while useful, this is no silver bullet for taking care of the Infected. It's still you--not Joel--who has to keep track of how the Infected respond to your behavior once you stop listening and start acting. One group of Infected, roaming around in the gloom of a disused subway station, repeatedly got the better of me as I tried to use a shotgun to take out a clicker, which gave away my position and led to me being swarmed by runners.

Ultimately, I opted for a sneakier approach, tossing bricks and bottles in an attempt to lure Infected towards each other, hoping that I could then take out several with a single, well-tossed Molotov. As I snuck around the station's hallways and put my plan into motion, I never for a moment felt safe. I was constantly worried that one false move would bring all of the Infected bearing down on me, that I'd once again witness the grisly sight of Joel falling victim to a clicker's attacks. It was only after the Infected had all gone up in flames that I finally felt I could exhale, relaxing for a moment but knowing my safety would not last. Facing the Infected made me tense and uneasy, and I can't wait to do it again.

Radiologik Scheduler 2013.2.1 - Schedule program blocks for Radiologik DJ.. (Free)

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 03:13 AM PST

Radiologik Scheduler schedules program blocks for Radiologik DJ creating a full-time automated radio station along with Radiologik DJ.

It chooses tracks from playlists in iTunes with a little bit of extra logic to figure out times and artist separation. It builds these segments in 30, 60, 90 or 120 minute blocks anywhere inside of a week schedule. The resolution of the script statements are in seconds.

Playlists, and particularly smart playlists in iTunes, give programming tracks enormous power. Because Radilogik DJ tells iTunes when it plays a track, you can use smart playlists to be sure you are not playing certain songs again for a specified period of time. This can give you a reservoir of tracks that have not played recently but enough tracks to still pick at random, effectively giving a random rotation. You can use many smart playlists for the same segment, giving you the ability to set when to play fast, medium, or slow songs or how often to play tired songs versus new songs that you may want to play more often.

Features include automatic placement of voiceover intros and outros, time announcements, date matching picking of file titles, exact time search fitting for to-the second programming, and special scheduling of ad traffic.

Radiologik Scheduler runs the appropriate script 20 minutes before the start time and sends that set of tracks and directions to Radiologik DJ's program queue.

Version 2013.2.1:

Note: Licensed users of Scheduler Advanced, check "Register"

  • More efficiently handles large time spans of start and stop times for flights
  • Added Search field for traffic flights
  • Fixed removing of combos that are more than 1 week old
  • Combos now more consistently get the Finder label of the first source file

  • Reworked Library playlist importing to be a filter for iTunes Library importing
  • Deletions of all the items of a search result in the Library will no longer clear the whole Library
  • Library sub sorts by artist and title on most sorts, album sub sorts by track number, sub sorts are always ascending
  • Drags from iTunes now better respect iTunes order and allow duplicates to Spot list
  • Spot list columns can now be resized
  • Play History now persists between launches
  • If the last track in queue is a voiceover, that length is subtracted from the queue end time reported to Scheduler
  • Fixes a crash during a drag reorder in the program queue to past the last item in queue when a player starts
  • Reworked loading of large mono mp3s
  • Added default button for keyboard in preferences
  • Fixed a problem of nil keyboard assignments causing trouble with starting programs on interrupts
  • Fixed an issue where pre-rendering of waveforms would get stuck when a file became unavailable which then had side-effects of not loading from Scheduler

Nutrients, Vol. 5, Pages 396-410: Soluble Fiber Dextrin and Soluble Corn Fiber Supplementation Modify Indices of Health in Cecum and Colon of Sprague-Dawley Rats

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

The objective of this study was to evaluate health outcomes resulting from dietary supplementation of novel, low-digestible carbohydrates in the cecum and colon of Sprague-Dawley rats randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups for 21 days: 5% cellulose (Control), Pectin, soluble fiber dextrin (SFD), or soluble corn fiber (SCF). Rats fed Pectin had a higher average daily food intake, but no differences in final body weights or rates of weight gain among treatments were observed. No differences were observed in total short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) or branched-chain fatty acid (BCFA) concentrations in the cecum and colon of rats fed either SFD or SCF. The SFD and SCF treatments increased cecal propionate and decreased butyrate concentrations compared to Control or Pectin. Pectin resulted in increased BCFA in the cecum and colon. Supplementation of SFD and SCF had no effect on cecal microbial populations compared to Control. Consumption of SFD and SCF increased total and empty cecal weight but not colon weight. Gut histomorphology was positively affected by SFD and SCF. Increased crypt depth, goblet cell numbers, and acidic mucin were observed in both the cecum and colon of rats supplemented with SFD, SCF, and Pectin. These novel, low-digestible carbohydrates appear to be beneficial in modulating indices of hindgut morphology when supplemented in the diet of the rat.

Sustainability, Vol. 5, Pages 590-591: Occupy Education: Living and Learning Sustainability. By Tina Lynn Evans, Peter Lang Publishing, 2012; 356 Pages. Price: $39.95, ISBN 978-1-4331-1966-8

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

Occupy Education is motivated by the sustainability crisis and energized by the drive for social justice that inspired the Occupy movement. Situated within the struggle for sustainability taking place amid looming resource shortages, climate change, economic instability, and ecological breakdown, the book is a timely contribution to community education and action. It opens a whole realm of integrated theory to educators and sustainability activists-and demonstrates how that theory can be moved into practice. Occupy Education is an excellent text for courses in sustainability studies, social philosophy, globalization, social justice, food system praxis, sustainability education, political economy, and environmental studies.

Sustainability, Vol. 5, Pages 570-589: Residential Tourism and Multiple Mobilities: Local Citizenship and Community Fragmentation in Costa Rica

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

Current patterns of “move-in move-out” hypermobility are perfectly exemplified by residential tourism: the temporary or permanent mobility of relatively well-to-do citizens from mostly western countries to a variety of tourist destinations, where they buy property. The mobility of residential tourists does not stand alone, but has broader chain effects: it converts local destinations into transnational spaces, leading to a highly differentiated and segmented population landscape. In this article, residential tourism’s implications in terms of local society in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, are examined, starting from the idea that these implications should be viewed as complex and traveling in time and space. Mobile groups, such as residential tourists, can have an important local participation and involvement (independently of national citizenship), although recent flows of migrants settle more into compatriot social networks. The fact that various migrant populations continually travel back and forth and do not envision a future in the area may restrict their opportunities and willingness for local involvement. Transnational involvement in itself is not a problem and can be successfully combined with high local involvement; however, the great level of fragmentation, mobility, temporariness and absenteeism in Guanacaste circumscribes successful community organizing. Still, the social system has not completely dissolved.

IJMS, Vol. 14, Pages 3201-3214: Structural and Optical Properties of Lead-Boro-Tellurrite Glasses Induced by Gamma-Ray

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

Spectrophotometric studies of lead borotellurite glasses were carried out before and after gamma irradiation exposure. The increasing peak on the TeO4 bi-pyramidal arrangement and TeO3+1 (or distorted TeO4) is due to augmentation of irradiation dose which is attributed to an increase in degree of disorder of the amorphous phase. The structures of lead tellurate contain Pb3TeO6 consisting of TeO3 trigonal pyramid connected by PbO4 tetragonal forming a three-dimensional network. The decrease of glass rigidity is due to irradiation process which is supported by the XRD diffractograms results. The decreasing values of absorption edge indicate that red shift effect occur after irradiation processes. A shift in the optical absorption edge attributed to an increase of the conjugation length. The values of optical band gap, Eopt were calculated and found to be dependent on the glass composition and radiation exposure. Generally, an increase and decrease in Urbach’s energy can be considered as being due to an increase in defects within glass network.

IJMS, Vol. 14, Pages 3178-3200: Activation of Defense Mechanisms against Pathogens in Mosses and Flowering Plants

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

During evolution, plants have developed mechanisms to cope with and adapt to different types of stress, including microbial infection. Once the stress is sensed, signaling pathways are activated, leading to the induced expression of genes with different roles in defense. Mosses (Bryophytes) are non-vascular plants that diverged from flowering plants more than 450 million years ago, allowing comparative studies of the evolution of defense-related genes and defensive metabolites produced after microbial infection. The ancestral position among land plants, the sequenced genome and the feasibility of generating targeted knock-out mutants by homologous recombination has made the moss Physcomitrella patens an attractive model to perform functional studies of plant genes involved in stress responses. This paper reviews the current knowledge of inducible defense mechanisms in P. patens and compares them to those activated in flowering plants after pathogen assault, including the reinforcement of the cell wall, ROS production, programmed cell death, activation of defense genes and synthesis of secondary metabolites and defense hormones. The knowledge generated in P. patens together with comparative studies in flowering plants will help to identify key components in plant defense responses and to design novel strategies to enhance resistance to biotic stress.
