Sensors, Vol. 13, Pages 5347-5367: Cramer-Rao Bounds and Coherence Performance Analysis for Next Generation Radar with Pulse Trains

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

We study the Cramer-Rao bounds of parameter estimation and coherence performance for the next generation radar (NGR). In order to enhance the performance of NGR, the signal model of NGR with master-slave architecture based on a single pulse is extended to the case of pulse trains, in which multiple pulses are emitted from all sensors and then integrated spatially and temporally in a unique master sensor. For the MIMO mode of NGR where orthogonal waveforms are emitted, we derive the closed-form Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the estimates of generalized coherence parameters (GCPs), including the time delay differences, total phase differences and Doppler frequencies with respect to different sensors. For the coherent mode of NGR where the coherent waveforms are emitted after pre-compensation using the estimates of GCPs, we develop a performance bound of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain for NGR based on the aforementioned CRBs, taking all the estimation errors into consideration. It is shown that greatly improved estimation accuracy and coherence performance can be obtained with pulse trains employed in NGR. Numerical examples demonstrate the validity of the theoretical results.

IJMS, Vol. 14, Pages 8638-8683: Melatonin: Buffering the Immune System

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Melatonin modulates a wide range of physiological functions with pleiotropic effects on the immune system. Despite the large number of reports implicating melatonin as an immunomodulatory compound, it still remains unclear how melatonin regulates immunity. While some authors argue that melatonin is an immunostimulant, many studies have also described anti-inflammatory properties. The data reviewed in this paper support the idea of melatonin as an immune buffer, acting as a stimulant under basal or immunosuppressive conditions or as an anti-inflammatory compound in the presence of exacerbated immune responses, such as acute inflammation. The clinical relevance of the multiple functions of melatonin under different immune conditions, such as infection, autoimmunity, vaccination and immunosenescence, is also reviewed.

Sustainability, Vol. 5, Pages 1700-1724: Optimal and Sustainable Plant Refurbishment in Historical Buildings: A Study of an Ancient Monastery Converted into a Showroom in Florence

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The aim of this research is to study the possibility and sustainability of retrofit and refurbishment design solutions on historical buildings converted to different uses and often clashing with their original purpose and architectural features. The building studied is an ancient monastery located in the historical center of Florence (Italy). Today the original cloister is covered over by a single glazed pitched roof and used as a fashion showroom. Our proposed solution concerns a reversible and sustainable plant design integrated with an active transparent building casing. The existing glazed pitched roof was reconsidered and re-designed as part of the existing heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) plant system, based on the functioning of an active thermal buffer to control the high heat flow rates and external thermal loads due to solar radiation. Hourly whole building energy analysis was carried out to check the effectiveness and energy sustainability of our proposed solution. Results obtained showed, from the historical-architectural, energy and environmental points of view, its sustainability due to the building-plant system integration and interaction with its location, the external climatic conditions and defined expected uses, in particular with reference to indoor thermal comfort.

Sustainability, Vol. 5, Pages 1680-1699: Indoor Thermal Comfort: The Behavioral Component

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

This is a study of how indoor temperature settings have changed over time in the United States based on data from the Energy Information Administration's, Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS). It is shown that Americans have moderately raised indoor temperature settings during the heating season over the past thirty years. It is also shown that most Americans keep their homes relatively cool in the summertime and are generally averse to implementing temperature setbacks. It is revealed that occupants in lower-income homes tend to set their thermostats higher in winter than other income groups, but that the most intense cooling tends to take place in both low-income and high-income homes. As expected, renters tend to heat and cool more intensively than homeowners. Getting Americans to change their temperature settings in order to save energy is not easy even though it comes with the promise of financial savings. The use of programmable thermostats thus far has proved unsuccessful. Greater utilization of social marketing to achieve energy savings is suggested, as well as a renewed effort on the part of electricity suppliers to work more closely with homeowners as part of the rollout of the "smart grid".

Energies, Vol. 6, Pages 2305-2318: Comparative Study of Dynamic Programming and Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle on Energy Management for a Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

This paper compares two optimal energy management methods for parallel hybrid electric vehicles using an Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT). A control-oriented model of the powertrain and vehicle dynamics is built first. The energy management is formulated as a typical optimal control problem to trade off the fuel consumption and gear shifting frequency under admissible constraints. The Dynamic Programming (DP) and Pontryagin's Minimum Principle (PMP) are applied to obtain the optimal solutions. Tuning with the appropriate co-states, the PMP solution is found to be very close to that from DP. The solution for the gear shifting in PMP has an algebraic expression associated with the vehicular velocity and can be implemented more efficiently in the control algorithm. The computation time of PMP is significantly less than DP.

Energies, Vol. 6, Pages 2291-2304: Effect of Burnable Absorbers on Inert Matrix Fuel Performance and Transuranic Burnup in a Low Power Density Light-Water Reactor

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Zirconium dioxide has received particular attention as a fuel matrix because of its ability to form a solid solution with transuranic elements, natural radiation stability and desirable mechanical properties. However, zirconium dioxide has a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity than uranium dioxide and this presents an obstacle to the deployment of these fuels in commercial reactors. Here we show that axial doping of a zirconium dioxide based fuel with erbium reduces power peaking and fuel temperature. Full core simulations of a modified AP1000 core were done using MCNPX 2.7.0. The inert matrix fuel contained 15 w/o transuranics at its beginning of life and constituted 28% of the assemblies in the core. Axial doping reduced power peaking at startup by more than ~23% in the axial direction and reduced the peak to average power within the core from 1.80 to 1.44. The core was able to remain critical between refueling while running at a simulated 2000 MWth on an 18 month refueling cycle. The results show that the reactor would maintain negative core average reactivity and void coefficients during operation. This type of fuel cycle would reduce the overall production of transuranics in a pressurized water reactor by 86%.

UK Chart: Injustice knocks BioShock Infinite into second place

Fire Emblem: Awakening launches in third place.

DC fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us has dethroned BioShock Infinite's three-week stint as king of the UK charts.

NetherRealm's Injustice is the first fighting game to claim top billing in the UK charts since UFC Undisputed 3 last year. It's also publisher Warner Bros.' first chart topper since LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

BioShock Infinite drops to second place, with 3DS RPG Fire Emblem: Awakening launching in third. The RPG helped boost hardware sales, too, with a 49 percent week-on-week increase in 3DS sales thanks to the launch of the Fire Emblem limited edition blue 3DS XL.

Tomb Raider drops two places to fourth, with Defiance dropping one spot to fifth.

The regular crop of familiar titles fill out the rest of the top 10: FIFA 13 is sixth, Call of Duty: Black Ops II seventh, Luigi's Mansion 2 eighth, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 ninth, and Far Cry 3 tenth.

Fans offer free Mother 3 translation to Nintendo

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 12:24 AM PDT

A team of fans has offered a translated version of Mother 3 to Nintendo, free of charge.

Role-playing game Mother 3 has never been released outside of Japan, but that has not stopped dedicated fans from translating it in its entirety. The team of fans, which also includes a professional translator, has offered up its localisation of the game to Nintendo free of charge in a post on its development blog.

Written under the handle "Mato", the blog post said, "I realize that localizing a game this size can cost a lot, so if it'll help in even the slightest, I'll gladly offer to let Nintendo use my text translation files for any use at all, completely for free."

The post also mentioned previous fan translations used by the game publishers, citing Ys: The Oath in Felghana as an instance where a fan translation was used in the creation of the localised version.

Mother 3 is the third game in the Earthbound series. The first and second games in the franchise were released outside of Japan as Mother and EarthBound, respectively. The third game was announced in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance console, although plans for localization in the West were never announced.

Metropolis 1.01 - Flexible WordPress client. (Demo)

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 03:08 AM PDT

Metropolis is a smart and powerful WordPress client that features offline support, pages, comments, posts, Twitter integration, and more.

Create and Edit Pages
Metropolis has a full-featured (and usable) WYSIWYG for editing posts and pages. Just like any other native Mac application, Metropolis supports drag-and-drop. You can drag links, images, text, and so on. The editing window also has checkboxes for enabling comments and trackbacks. Fields for tags and for a custom post slug are also available. If you like the old way of editing posts and pages, Metropolis also has an HTML editor. Did I mention you can switch between editors with a single click? And there's syntax coloring too!

Work Offline
Nowadays, an Internet connection is available in most places, however there are still a few places like airplanes, boats, and trains where it usually isn't available. You can work on posts and pages offline just as if you were online. Even images can be added to the post/page and uploaded when you publish your post or page. And best of all, that works for images too!

Socialize
Being social is very important nowadays. That's why Metropolis has Twitter integration. When you create a post, you can automatically post it to your Twitter account. It would be also cool to know if your posts are popular on Twitter. You can get a list of people who tweeted the link to your post by going to the social tab. Just select the post, click on the Twitter button and on refresh. Results will automagically appear. If you want to give something away to those who tweeted your link, Metropolis will generate random names from the results retrieved from Twitter. It's also possible to save the random name list for future refference. Metropolis is integrated to TNT.fm. So it's possible to see the stats for your shortened link.

Comments
What's the goal of using a blogging client if you have to login to your blog all the time just to manage comments? Metropolis can approve/unnaprove, edit, delete, and even reply to comments. You can also configure to it look for comments every X minutes. When it finds new comments, it displays a notification on Notification Center. But don't worry if you're using a version of the operating system earlier than OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Instead of Notification Center, a window similar to it will appear. Oh, and there's Gravatar support too!

Other Features

  • Full screen support. And it works on Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard too!
  • Protect Metropolis with a password, so no one else can open it.
  • Create a custom preview template just by using regular HTML and CSS. Each blog can have its own template!
  • A post signature which can include day, month, year, and the current song on iTunes.
  • Possibility to configure if you want checkboxes like 'Allow comments', 'Share on Twitter', 'Post signature' and 'Allow pingbacks' to be checked by default. It's also possible to configure the default post status for each blog.
  • Customize the colors used on the HTML syntax highlighting.
  • Add and manage as many blogs as you want!
  • Search for posts, comments, pages, local drafts, and Twitter links.
  • Retina display support.
  • And much more...

Version 1.01:
  • Fixed a bug which made Metropolis freeze on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion when managing comments.

Documentary on hidden victims of Greek austerity that's crowdfunded, free & CC-licensed

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 02:50 AM PDT

Into the Fire writes, "Into The Fire is a film with a difference. Besides being a hard hitting documentary which shows the plight of refugees and migrants amidst a collapsing Greek economy, it's also an experiment in new film production and distribution techniques. A year ago, we made a first, crowd-funded trip to Athens. We filmed shocking levels of racism, police brutality, and right-wing extremism - as well as the courageous and inspiring people who are organising against it.

"Into the Fire will be released on 21st April on the internet. We crowd-funded the film and crowd-sourced the subtitles: it's been translated into eight languages using the open subtitler Amara. We are also using crowd-sourcing as the release and distribution strategy for the documentary: anyone who signs up to participate will receive embedding details ahead of time, and the film will be released on various websites simultaneously. The audience becomes the distribution network."
