Scott Stuber to produce Gears of War film - Report

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 12:47 AM PDT

Scott Stuber signs on to produce film adaptation of Gears of War.

Scott Stuber has signed on to produce and begin work on the script for the Gears of War film, Variety has reported.

Talks to adapt Epic Games' third-person shooter Gears of War for the big screen have been underway for several years. The project, which was revealed in 2007, encountered development troubles in 2010 and was reportedly revived in 2012.

Stuber is no stranger to the action genre, having produced such films such as Safe House and the upcoming 47 Ronin.

Several Hollywood names have been attached to the project in the past, including directors Tony Scott (Top Gun, Man on Fire), Len Wiseman (Underworld: Evolution), and writer Chris Morgan (Wanted; The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift). The Creative Arts Agency, which represents Epic Games, was reportedly eager to meet with producers to discuss the film in October last year.

Lord of the Rings studio New Line originally picked up rights to the movie adaptation, but the project was put on hold in order to focus efforts on the Hobbit trilogy. Stuber reportedly has a first look deal with Universal.

Little Snitch 3.1 - Alerts you to outgoing network connections. (Demo)

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 08:59 PM PDT

Little Snitch sees what happens under the hood.

A firewall protects your computer against unwanted guests from the Internet. But who protects your private data from being sent out? Little Snitch does!

As soon as you're connected to the Internet, applications can potentially send whatever information they want to wherever they want.

Sometimes they do this for good reason, on your explicit request. But often they don't. Little Snitch allows you to intercept these unwanted connection attempts, and lets you decide how to proceed.

Little Snitch informs you whenever a program attempts to establish an Internet connection. You can then choose to allow or deny this connection, or define a rule how to handle similar, future connection attempts. This reliably prevents private data from being sent out without your knowledge. Little Snitch runs inconspicuously in the background and it can also detect network related activity of viruses, trojans and other malware.

Version 3.1:
  • Automatic Profile Switching This new feature allows you to assign networks (for example your Wi-Fi network at home, a public hotspot, etc.) to certain profiles. Whenever you join one of these networks, Little Snitch detects the network change and switches to the associated profile automatically.
       When you join a network for the first time, Little Snitch shows an alert window allowing you to choose the desired profile. Alternatively you can configure a default profile that will be used for all unknown networks.
       The mappings between profiles and networks can be reviewed and edited later in Little Snitch Configuration, either in the profiles section of the sidebar, or in the new "Known Networks" window (⇧⌘K).
       Automatic Profile Switching is off by default. To use it, it must be enabled in Little Snitch Configuration > Preferences > Automatic Profile Switching.
  • In the menu bar item "Silent Mode" and "Start/Stop Network Filter" entries are now hidden if "Allow Preferences Editing" is disabled.
  • Improved "Restore Factory Defaults" feature.
  • Updated help section to reflect changes mentioned above.
  • Fixed a bug which caused a kernel panic in some rare cases.
  • Minor other bugfixes and improvements.

Supreme Court says states can limit freedom-of-information requests from out-of-state, Muckrock hacks around it with your help

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 11:06 PM PDT

Michael from MuckRock sez,

The Supreme Court ruled this morning that states have the right to restrict public records access to locals, meaning one more hurdle to would-be muckrakers everywhere. Even in-state requesters are harmed: It means one more bureaucratic hurdle and another excuse for agencies to respond in paper rather than electronically.

MuckRock has helped file requests in all 50 states -- important for projects like the Drone Census -- and we're looking for more volunteers to help ensure transparency from sea to shining sea.

States impacted:

* Alabama
* Arkansas
* Delaware
* Georgia
* New Hampshire
* New Jersey
* Tennessee
* Virginia

If you live in one of the above, fill out a simple form and we can help ensure that sunshine isn't restricted depending on where you live:

To keep filing in all 50 states, MuckRock needs your help (Thanks, Michael!)

Layoffs hit Square Enix Europe

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 09:07 PM PDT

Square Enix layoffs to hit European and UK offices; exact employee numbers unknown.

Square Enix has begun a round of layoffs in its UK and European offices.

In a statement to MCV UK, the company confirmed the news. The announcement comes after the publisher saw an "extraordinary loss" for the financial year ended March 31.

Speaking to the trade publication, Square Enix said, "We are reviewing our business in Europe to ensure we have the right structure, content, and skills for the changing entertainment landscape."

"We do expect changes to the UK office, which will affect personnel. We will update you when the time is right, but our priority right now is for the people within the business.'

Last month, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada resigned from the company following the announcement of an expected 10 billion yen loss for the 2012-2013 financial year. Despite being well-received critically, sales for big-budget Square Enix titles Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution, and Sleeping Dogs failed to meet expectations in the North American market.
