Disklens 1.1.0 - Quickly and easily find anything on your Mac. (Demo)

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 03:40 AM PDT

Disklens is a Spotlight alternative that lets you quickly and easily find anything on your Mac.

Version 1.1.0:

Improvements
  • Disklens now considers Spotlight comments (tags). Search results that stem from a tag match are listed in a new "Tags" category (in addition to their usual classification). While this may not seem a big deal, it actually adds a new dimension of organizing and finding your files. Tags are assigned to files or folders by means of Finder's' Info panel (Cmd+I / Spotlight comments).
  • In drill-down, the result list now shows month separators, for better visual orientation.
  • There's now a bit of vertical padding between categories, to make the result list a little easier on the eye.
  • The result of a calculation can now be copied to the clipboard with Cmd+C.
  • The info popup now shows pixel dimensions and camera model for images and movies, if available.
  • When navigating back out of drill-down, the drill-down category is now selected, and the scroll position restored.
  • There's a new "To-Do" category. Right now, it will only list Things items. If you get "Unresolved items" that clearly belong to your favorite To-Do manager, please email the respective content types to me by clicking on the "Unresolved items, please click here" entry at the bottom of the result list.
  • Added Spanish localization.
Bugfixes
  • Fixed an issue with the shortcut on OS X 10.8.

  • OS X 10.7.4 or later

InerziaMode 2.1 - Launch applications as a group. (Commercial)

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 03:31 AM PDT

InerziaMode is not another application launcher for your Mac: it actually changes the way you use your computer! With InerziaMode you'll be able to group the applications that you use for your projects in Modes, that can be launched with a single click.

For example, if you want to record a new song, you may need more than one application, and each of the applications should open a different file or do some actions (one should open your composition, another should tune your guitar, etc.). With InerziaMode all these things are done the first time and never again. Configure a Mode to open the applications and the files you need and, when you click on "Start", everything will be launched and configured instantly.

InerziaMode is a revolutionary new way of conceiving your workspace. You don't have to worry about opening and closing applications anymore: there are your projects and applications, which automatically run and stop all together. So if you are working on Xcode and you've got a great idea for a new song, stop the running Mode, launch the one you have set up for music, and... that's it!

Version 2.1:

New Features:

  • It's now possible to reorder reverse actions
Improvements:
  • Italian localization
Bugs Fixes:
  • Fixed a problem with not found applications in modes
  • Fixed an issue while updating modes name
  • Fixed an issue that prevented some actions to initialize properly
  • Fixed a problem when loading the Settings view of an action

Materials, Vol. 6, Pages 1485-1495: Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Class C Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Paste and Mortar

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

This paper presents workability, compressive strength and microstructure for geopolymer pastes and mortars made of class C fly ash at mass ratios of water-to-fly ash from 0.30 to 0.35. Fluidity was in the range of 145–173 mm for pastes and 131–136 mm for mortars. The highest strengths of paste and mortar were 58 MPa and 85 MPa when they were cured at 70 °C for 24 h. In XRD patterns, unreacted quartz and some reacted product were observed. SEM examination indicated that reacted product has formed and covered the unreacted particles in the paste and mortar that were consistent with their high strength.

Materials, Vol. 6, Pages 1467-1484: Organized Silica Films Generated by Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly as Hosts for Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

In this work, we prepared oriented mesoporous thin films of silica on various solid substrates using the pluronic block copolymer P123 as a template. We attempted to insert guest iron oxide (FexOy) nanoparticles into these films by two different methods: (a) by co-precipitation—where iron precursors are introduced in the synthesis sol before deposition of the silica film—and subsequent oxide production during the film calcination step; (b) by preparing and calcining the silica films first then impregnating them with the iron precursor, obtaining the iron oxide nanoparticles by a second calcination step. We have examined the structural effects of the guest nanoparticles on the silica film structures using grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GISAXS), high-resolution transmission electron spectroscopy (HRTEM), spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman microscopy. Formation of nanoparticles by co-precipitation may induce substantial changes in the film structure leading, in our adopted process, to the appearance of lamellar ordering in the calcination stage. On the contrary, impregnation-based approaches perturb the film structures much more weakly, but are also less efficient in filling the pores with nanoparticles.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 4181-4191: Yellow Pigments, Fomitellanols A and B, and Drimane Sesquiterpenoids, Cryptoporic Acids P and Q, from Fomitella fraxinea and Their Inhibitory Activity against COX and 5-LO

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Yellow pigments, fomitellanols A (1a) and B (2a), and drimane-type sesquiterpenoid ethers of isocitric acid, cryptoporic acids P (3) and Q (4), have been isolated from the fruiting bodies of Fomitella fraxinea (Polyporaceae). Their structures were established by a combination of extensive NMR spectroscopy and/or X-ray crystallographic analyses, and their biological activity against COX-1, COX-2, and 5-LO was investigated.

Molecules, Vol. 18, Pages 4170-4180: Chemical Composition and Nematicidal Activity of Essential Oil of Agastache rugosa against Meloidogyne incognita

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The aim of this research was to determine the chemical composition and nematicidal activity of essential oil of Agastache rugosa flowering aerial parts against the root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, and to isolate and identify any nematicidal constituents from the essential oil. The essential oil of A. rugosa aerial parts was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. A total of 37 components of the essential oil were identified, with the principal compounds being methyleugenol (50.51%), estragole (8.55%), and eugenol (7.54%), followed by thymol (3.62%), pulegone (2.56%), limonene (2.49%) and caryophyllene (2.38%). Based on bioactivity-guided fractionation, the three active constituents were isolated from the essential oil and identified as methyleugenol, estragole and eugenol. The essential oil of A. rugosa exhibited strong nematicidal activity against M. incognita, with a LC50 value of 47.3 μg/mL. The components eugenol (LC50 = 66.6 μg/mL) and methyleugenol (LC50 = 89.4 μg/mL) exhibited stronger nematicidal activity against M. incognita (LC50 = 185.9 μg/mL). The results indicate that the essential oil of A. rugosa aerial parts and its constituent compounds have potential for development into natural nematicides for control of the root knot nematode.

Geosciences, Vol. 3, Pages 140-158: Spatial Evolution of the Chromium Contamination in Soils from the Assopos to Thiva Basin and C. Evia (Greece) and Potential Source(s): Anthropogenic versus Natural Processes

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

The investigation of the contamination in soil, plants and groundwater revealed a spatial evolution, with an increasing trend in the Cr, Fe, Ni, Mn and Co contents in soils from the Assopos to Thiva basin, followed by C. Evia and Ni-laterite deposits, suggesting that the latter and their parent ophiolites are a potential source for these metals. In contrast, the contamination in groundwater by Cr(VI), ranging from 2 to 360 μg/L Cr, and a varying degree of salinization is probably due to both human activities and natural processes. A diverse source for the contamination of soil and groundwater in the Assopos-Thiva basins is consistent with the increasing trend of the Mg/Si ratio and Cr(VI) concentration in water. The use of deep karst-type aquifer instead of the shallow-Neogene one may provide a solution to the crucial environmental problem. The selective extraction by EDTA and alkaline solution showed that Cr and Fe are less available than Mn. The Cr contents in plants range from <1 to tens of mg/kg, due probably to the high resistance of chromite. However, the average Crtotal contents in plants/crops are higher than normal or sufficient values, whilst Crtotal accumulation [(% metals in plants × 100)/metal in soil] and Cr(VI) accumulation are relatively low. There is a very good positive correlation between accumulation factors for Cr and Fe (R2 = 0.92), suggesting a similarity concerning their uptake.

Naughty Dog insisted on female testers for The Last of Us

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:03 AM PDT

The marketing company responsible for focus testing the apocalyptic game ignored female gamers; suggested removing Ellie from box art.

The Last of Us was originally only intended to be focus tested on a male audience, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckman revealed in an interview with The Escapist.

The oversight came not from the studio creating the game, but rather a seemingly "girls don't play video games" attitude from an unnamed research firm given the job of managing focus testing during development.

"Another aspect that influences how a game is promoted is focus testing. Players are rounded up and are asked to view materials and answer some quantitative and qualitative questions about it," Druckman explained. "My big surprise during this process [was] that the research group wasn't planning on focus testing female gamers--it's something we had to specifically request. I hope this is a relic of the past that will soon go away."

The article went on to suggest that the marketing firm even allegedly went as far as to recommended moving co-main character Ellie to the back of the game box. Naughty Dog ignored the advice, instead placing her alongside Joel on the front of the game's packaging.

The Last of Us was previously scheduled to arrive on May 7, but was last month delayed five weeks to a June 14 launch. Naughty Dog explained at the time that due to the "massive" nature of the game's story, the extra development time was needed to "ensure every detail" was up to the developer's standards.

A demo for The Last of Us is in the works, with owners of God of War: Ascension receiving first access.

Laws, Vol. 2, Pages 51-68: Sodomy Laws and Gender Variance in Tahiti and Hawai‘i

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

In both Hawaiian and Tahitian, the central meaning of mahu denotes gender-variant individuals, particularly male-bodied persons who have a significant investment in femininity. However, in Hawai'i, unlike Tahiti, the word mahu is now more commonly used as an insult against gay or transgender people. The negative connotation of the term in Hawaiian indexes lower levels of social acceptability for mahu identity on O'ahu (Hawai'i's most populous island) as compared to Tahiti. The article argues that these differences are partly due to a historical legacy of sexually repressive laws. The article traces the history of sodomy laws in these two Polynesian societies and argues that this history supports the hypothesis that sodomy laws (in conjunction with such social processes as urbanisation and Christianisation) are partially to blame for the diminished social status of mahu on O'ahu. A different social and legal history in Tahiti accounts for the fact that the loss of social status experienced by Tahitian mahu has been lesser than that of their Hawaiian counterparts.
