Molecules, Vol. 17, Pages 7057-7066: Chemical Composition of Essential Oils of Litsea cubeba Harvested from Its Distribution Areas in China

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers. is a promising industrial crop with fruits rich in essential oils. The chemical composition of essential oils of L. cubeba (EOLC) were determined for fruits harvested from eight regions in China. The overall essential oil content, obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), ranged from 3.04% to 4.56%. In total, 59 compounds were identified, the dominant components being monoterpenes (94.4–98.4%), represented mainly by neral and geranial (78.7–87.4%). D-Limonene was unexpectedly a lesser constituent (0.7–5.3%) in fruits, which differed from previous reports (6.0–14.6%). Several components were only detected in certain regions and compounds such as o-cymene and eremophilene have never before been reported in EOLC. These results demonstrate significant regional variation in the chemical composition of EOLC. This investigation provides important information with regard to the bioactivity, breeding work and industrial applications of L. cubeba.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 4, Pages 1693-1715: Nation-Wide Clear-Cut Mapping in Sweden Using ALOS PALSAR Strip Images

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array L-band type Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) backscatter images with 50 m pixel size (strip images) at HV-polarization were used to map clear-cuts at a regional and national level in Sweden. For a set of 31 clear-cuts, on average 59.9% of the pixels within each clear-cut were correctly detected. When compared with a one-pixel edge-eroded version of the reference dataset, the accuracy increased to 88.9%. With respect to statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency, county-wise clear-felled areas were underestimated by the ALOS PALSAR dataset (between 25% and 60%) due to the coarse resolution. When compared with statistics from the Swedish National Forest Inventory, the discrepancies were larger, partly due to the estimation errors from the plot-wise forest inventory data. In Sweden, for the time frame of 2008–2010, the total area felled was estimated to be 140,618 ha, 172,532 ha and 194,586 ha using data from ALOS PALSAR, the Swedish Forest Agency and the Swedish National Forest Inventory, respectively. ALOS PALSAR strip images at HV-polarization appear suitable for detection of clear-felled areas at a national level; nonetheless, the pixel size of 50 m is a limiting factor for accurate delineation of clear-felled areas.

Remote Sensing, Vol. 4, Pages 1671-1692: Unmanned Aircraft Systems in Remote Sensing and Scientific Research: Classification and Considerations of Use

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have evolved rapidly over the past decade driven primarily by military uses, and have begun finding application among civilian users for earth sensing reconnaissance and scientific data collection purposes. Among UAS, promising characteristics are long flight duration, improved mission safety, flight repeatability due to improving autopilots, and reduced operational costs when compared to manned aircraft. The potential advantages of an unmanned platform, however, depend on many factors, such as aircraft, sensor types, mission objectives, and the current UAS regulatory requirements for operations of the particular platform. The regulations concerning UAS operation are still in the early development stages and currently present significant barriers to entry for scientific users. In this article we describe a variety of platforms, as well as sensor capabilities, and identify advantages of each as relevant to the demands of users in the scientific research sector. We also briefly discuss the current state of regulations affecting UAS operations, with the purpose of informing the scientific community about this developing technology whose potential for revolutionizing natural science observations is similar to those transformations that GIS and GPS brought to the community two decades ago.

IJMS, Vol. 13, Pages 7098-7108: Genome-Wide DNA Methylation Changes between the Superficial and Deep Backfat Tissues of the Pig

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Adipose tissue is not only a storage organ involved in fuel metabolism, but also an endocrine organ involved in the regulation of insulin sensitivity, thermogenesis, immunity, and inflammation. There are anatomical, cellular, molecular and physiological differences among adipose tissues deposited in different body sites. However, current understanding of the intrinsic differences between the sub-compartments of the subcutaneous adipose tissue remains rudimentary. Here, we analyzed the genome-wide DNA methylation differences between the porcine superficial and deep backfat tissues using methylated DNA immunoprecipitation combined with high-throughput sequencing. We show that the genes with differentially methylated regions in their promoter are mainly involved in the processes of "lipid metabolism" and "regulation of immune-related cytokines". Compared with the deep backfat tissue, the promoters of genes related to the 'positive regulation of cytokine production' were significantly hypermethylated in the superficial backfat tissue, which reflects the intrinsic functional and metabolic differences between the sub-compartments of the subcutaneous adipose tissue. This study provides epigenetic evidence for functionally relevant methylation differences between different layers of porcine backfat tissues.

Five Reasons Lapsed Star Wars Fans Will Love 1313

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 05:43 PM PDT

E3 2012: And the Jedi ain't one.

Star Wars 1313 is one of the major highlights of E3 2012. The spectacular demo not only gave showgoers a glimpse of what the next generation of games will look like, but more importantly, it went a long way toward revealing a concerted effort by the entirety of Lucasfilm, including Industrial Light and Magic, to craft a Star Wars experience that hooks fans, both current and lapsed. We've got five reasons the latter should take notice.

The Original Trilogy

If you've seen the only piece of art released for the game, then you might already know that 1313 takes place in the beloved, original trilogy era as revealed by the Tie Fighters and the Imperial shuttle. But even without the art, the 1313 demo gives a pretty clear indication of the time frame--the clothing and the ship design are all very reminiscent of what we've seen in the movies and other media set against the same period.

No Jedi

Let's face it--Jedi are kind of everywhere at this point. The spiritual figures of the Star Wars universe have long been some of its most popular characters, but so many games focus on their struggles, pitting you as one of the iconic Force-wielding characters. Frankly, we're feeling a little lightsaber fatigue, and most lapsed Star Wars fans probably are too.

1313

What better way to bring Star Wars fans back into the fold than focusing the story around a lesser-known part of the political hub of the Star Wars universe: Coruscant, which also happens to be a planet-wide city with thousands of levels that plunge deep beneath the surface. In fact, 1313 represents a level deep beneath the surface--a place where the Force doesn't exist; the Jedi don't inhabit; and only the most dubious characters reside.

Bounty Hunters

Flamethrowers. Jetpacks. Grappling hooks. Bounty hunters have access to some pretty cool gadgets within the Star Wars universe. Since the focus of 1313 is on the morally questionable figures, LucasArts wants you to experience every facet of their lives, including the cool gadgets and the trouble that comes along with them.

Next-Generation Visuals

1313 runs on a heavily modified version of the Unreal 3 engine, the same version that powered the impressive Samaritan demo. The game already looks fantastic and showcases the immense talents of Lucasfilm's Industrial Light and Magic special effects studio. The lighting and character models and their animation are all incredibly impressive and serve as a great example of what games could look like when the next generation of consoles arrive.

E3 2012 draws 45,700, brings in $40 million

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 05:29 PM PDT

E3 2012: Entertainment Software Association parses statistics for this year's geek gathering, says dates and host city for E3 2013 to be announced in coming weeks.

LOS ANGELES--Over 45,700 people attended the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, according to the Entertainment Software Association, the body that organizes the event. The show boosted the local economy, too, generating close to $40 million for host city Los Angeles, California.

Dates and the host city for E3 2013 will be announced in the coming weeks, the ESA said. If a recent report proves accurate, the show may leave Los Angeles next year. The Los Angeles Times reported this week that the ESA is considering moving the show to a new city if proposed construction at the LACC is not resolved. The LACC has hosted all but two E3s in the show's 18-year history.

Highlights from E3 2012 include Ubisoft unveiling a new open-world action game called Watch Dogs, Dead Space 3 coming out of the shadows, and Square Enix showing off what a next-generation Final Fantasy game could look like. For more on E3 2012, check out GameSpot's complete coverage.

Like an Old Friend Returning

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 05:13 PM PDT

E3 2012: Pikmin 3 is as delightful and charming as you remember the franchise being.

When nothing grows in your garden, you begin to fear the worst. Have the nutrients all been used up? Do you have an infestation of boll weevils? No one poured salt in the earth, did they? But then one morning you walk through your garden, assuming that you'll once again be greeted by a barren patch of black soil, when a green stalk catches your eye. Could it be true? Has your garden finally returned? The years of absence fade away as you rejoice in your blossoming oasis.

That's the feeling that sprung forth when Nintendo showed off Pikmin 3 for the first time. This plant-based real-time strategy franchise has been off the radar for eight long years. Though Nintendo did mention its existence once or twice, it always seemed like an empty promise. The idea that there really was a sequel to this beloved adventure, inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto's own gardening hobby, was like a dream that would vanish as soon as we woke up. But now that it's real, and we had a chance to play it, we can confirm that it's just as charming as you remember.

If anything, Pikmin has only become more endearing in the eight years (two console generations!) we've been apart. Amid the sea of violence and vulgarity that permeates big-budget games, the lovable, pint-sized beings are a welcome respite. But it's not just the happy-go-lucky tone that makes Pikmin 3 so engrossing; it's the core concept. What worked so well on the GameCube is still incredibly rewarding almost a decade later.

Very little has changed since Pikmin 2 doffed its flowery cap. And though being derivative is usually a bad thing, it works for Pikmin because it has been so long since the last game came out, and there is nothing else on the market quite like it. It's hard to be sick of an idea when games sporting that gameplay surface only once in a blue moon.

For the uninitiated, you control a pint-size spaceman that has crash-landed on Earth. Upon arriving in this strange land, you find a group of plantlike creatures waiting for you. Docile and obedient, they circle around you when you blow a whistle. In the demo we played, resource gathering was the main task. So we sought out trash on the ground, directed our Pikmin to carry it back to our ship, and basked in the wealth.

Given that the Wii U doesn't support the GameCube controller, we used the Wii Remote with Nunchuk. Although we were initially hesitant to change, the new method is, at worst, equal to what the original offered, and could be better with practice. You can easily point at the objects you want to collect and send your Pikmin that way quickly and smoothly. Switching between different Pikmin (there were two in the demo, red and stone) is a snap, and gathering them with your beckoning whistle is as easy as pie. The GamePad is also supported, though we weren't allowed to try it for ourselves. We were told that it's a little less intuitive using that controller instead of the Wii Remote, and E3 goers unfamiliar with the concept of Pikmin were struggling to come to grips with the controls.

Although we aren't sure how the game feels with the GamePad, we're certain that what we played is incredibly fun. The slow pacing and gooey charm go together beautifully, and the combat is fast and furious. Using the new aiming controls, you can attack enemies from different angles with ease, and hoisting the carcass after a hard-fought battle is always rewarding. We're giddy that this game actually exists, and is incredibly fun, and we cannot wait to play the final game sometime during the Wii U's launch window.
