SD Gundam G Generation Overworld slated for PSP in Japan

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 11:15 PM PDT

The latest Gundam strategy RPG will be out in September; it contains dual story scenarios.

Namco Bandai recently announced that there will be yet another Gundam strategy RPG on its way to the PSP. According to a recent copy of Famitsu (via Sinobu), the latest title is called SD Gundam G Generation Overworld.

The new title will consist of new Gundam mechs from different stories and canon, such as Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny and Gundam: Battlefield Record U.C. 0081. The game will feature two different scenarios for its story mode: a World Tour mode, where players live out scenarios from various Gundam universes, and a World Core mode, where players relive the events of the G Generation system scenario.

A new feature in this turn-based strategy RPG is the master skills system, where players gain access to leader unit skills that can turn the tide of battle quickly. Examples of these skills include the ability to evade attacks with a 100 percent success rate for a single turn, and the ability to raise up a unit's attack strength drastically until the end of a battle.

SD Gundam G Generation Overworld will be out in Japan on September 27. An English version of the game has yet to be announced.

Sega announces Valkyria Chronicles browser game

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 08:33 PM PDT

The new iteration of the strategy RPG will be card based and free to play.

Valkyria Chronicles 3 for the PSP may not see the light of day in English, but gamers can at least get a taste of a new title in the franchise that will launch for the PC. Sega recently announced the next iteration in the strategy RPG series: a browser game called Valkyria Chronicles Duel.

In this new game, players get to build an army consisting of past Valkyria Chronicle characters and weaponry that are represented by cards with different values and in-game properties. Users have to develop and fortify their base camp, expand and conquer territory, and fight off the opposition represented by 3D character battles akin to past titles on the PS3 and PSP.

The game will be free to play, and will consist of a micro-transaction system involving items. Interested parties can check it out and sign up for a user test session held from today until June 25. There is currently no mention of a release date for this game.

Sensors, Vol. 12, Pages 8426-8436: Multiplex Immunoassay Platforms Based on Shape-Coded Poly(ethylene glycol) Hydrogel Microparticles Incorporating Acrylic Acid

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

A suspension protein microarray was developed using shape-coded poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel microparticles for potential applications in multiplex and high-throughput immunoassays. A simple photopatterning process produced various shapes of hydrogel micropatterns that were weakly bound to poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-coated substrates. These micropatterns were easily detached from substrates during the washing process and were collected as non-spherical microparticles. Acrylic acids were incorporated into hydrogels, which could covalently immobilize proteins onto their surfaces due to the presence of carboxyl groups. The amount of immobilized protein increased with the amount of acrylic acid due to more available carboxyl groups. Saturation was reached at 25% v/v of acrylic acid. Immunoassays with IgG and IgM immobilized onto hydrogel microparticles were successfully performed with a linear concentration range from 0 to 500 ng/mL of anti-IgG and anti-IgM, respectively. Finally, a mixture of two different shapes of hydrogel microparticles immobilizing IgG (circle) and IgM (square) was prepared and it was demonstrated that simultaneous detection of two different target proteins was possible without cross-talk using same fluorescence indicator because each immunoassay was easily identified by the shapes of hydrogel microparticles.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 2028-2046: Two LQRI based Blade Pitch Controls for Wind Turbines

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

As the wind turbine size has been increasing and their mechanical components are built lighter, the reduction of the structural loads becomes a very important task of wind turbine control in addition to maximum wind power capture. In this paper, we present a separate set of collective and individual pitch control algorithms. Both pitch control algorithms use the LQR control technique with integral action (LQRI), and utilize Kalman filters to estimate system states and wind speed. Compared to previous works in this area, our pitch control algorithms can control rotor speed and blade bending moments at the same time to improve the trade-off between rotor speed regulation and load reduction, while both collective and individual pitch controls can be designed separately. Simulation results show that the proposed collective and individual pitch controllers achieve very good rotor speed regulation and significant reduction of blade bending moments.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 2012-2027: Double-Linear Approximation Algorithm to Achieve Maximum-Power-Point Tracking for Photovoltaic Arrays

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

In this paper, a double-linear approximation algorithm (DLAA) to achieve maximum-power-point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) arrays is proposed. The DLAA is based on the approximation that the maximum power point varies linearly with irradiation and temperature. With the DLAA, a maximum power point can be determined instantaneously. Moreover, complicated calculations and perturbations about an optimal point can be avoided. The paper also proposes a corresponding circuit to realize the DLAA. The configuration of the DLAA circuit is simple such that it is cost-effective and can be embedded into PV arrays easily. An example of implementation of a PV power supply system with the proposed MPPT is designed and the DLAA is compared with the perturb-and-observe method. Simulated and experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility of the PV power system and verified the advantages of the proposed DLAA.

Energies, Vol. 5, Pages 1943-2011: Comprehensive Evaluation of Algal Biofuel Production: Experimental and Target Results

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Worldwide, algal biofuel research and development efforts have focused on increasing the competitiveness of algal biofuels by increasing the energy and financial return on investments, reducing water intensity and resource requirements, and increasing algal productivity. In this study, analyses are presented in each of these areas—costs, resource needs, and productivity—for two cases: (1) an Experimental Case, using mostly measured data for a lab-scale system, and (2) a theorized Highly Productive Case that represents an optimized commercial-scale production system, albeit one that relies on full-price water, nutrients, and carbon dioxide. For both cases, the analysis described herein concludes that the energy and financial return on investments are less than 1, the water intensity is greater than that for conventional fuels, and the amounts of required resources at a meaningful scale of production amount to significant fractions of current consumption (e.g., nitrogen). The analysis and presentation of results highlight critical areas for advancement and innovation that must occur for sustainable and profitable algal biofuel production can occur at a scale that yields significant petroleum displacement. To this end, targets for energy consumption, production cost, water consumption, and nutrient consumption are presented that would promote sustainable algal biofuel production. Furthermore, this work demonstrates a procedure and method by which subsequent advances in technology and biotechnology can be framed to track progress.
